IMMANUEL EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Whoever Believes Second Sunday in Lent | March 8, 2020 Contemporary Worship WELCOME In the name of our Lord Jesus, welcome to one and all! We pray that here at Immanuel you will find the warmth of Christian hospitality, the abiding truth of God's Word and the quiet assurance of peace in Christ. If we can assist you in any way, please ask. Come worship with us again!

TODAY’S FOCUS: God’s gifts come by faith to all who believe. Not by a holy life. Not by acts of obedience. Simple trust in the promises of God brings every blessing that Jesus won by his perfect life and innocent death. Abraham believed God promise and so became not only the father of a nation, but the forefather of the promised Savior through whom all people would be blessed. He had faith in God who justifies the wicked, and God credited it to him as righteousness. By this same faith, Christ gives the credit for his righteousness to all who believe – even us!

OPENING SONG: GOD OF CALVARY

Verse 1 On the hill of Calvary the light of all the world With the world on His shoulders The weight of all our shame On Him who knew no sin A holy surrender The sky went dark the angels wept The Father looked away The final breath He bowed His head The Lamb of God was slain

Chorus By His wounds I am set free By His blood I've been redeemed The great divide He crossed for me Oh praise the God of Calvary

Verse 2 On the hill of Calvary into the Father's hands A holy surrender A borrowed tomb His mother wept And there His body lay But the stone was moved He conquered death and rose from the grave 3

Bridge And if I never of this place I will never never lose sight of Your grace Your cross is all all I need to see Oh praise the God of Calvary (REPEAT)

Ending Your cross is all all I need to see Oh praise the God of Calvary

M: My help comes from the LORD, C: the maker of heaven and earth.

M: He will not let your foot slip, C: he who watches over you will not slumber;

M: indeed, he who watches over Israel C: will neither slumber nor sleep.

M: The LORD watches over you, C: the LORD is your shade at your right hand.

M: The LORD will keep you from all harm, C: he will watch over your life;

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

5

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.

Almighty God, you see that we have no power to defend ourselves. Guard and keep us both outwardly and inwardly from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE: At The Cross ()

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies. There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide. Where all the love I've ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down.

6

Chorus At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus

There's a place where sin and shame are powerless. Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness. Where all the love I've ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down.

Chorus At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You

Bridge Here my hope is found. Here on holy ground, here I bow down, here I bow down. Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life. Here I bow down, here I bow

At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You 7

At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You. Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white. I owe all to You, I owe all to You. I owe all to You, I owe all to You. Jesus Jesus

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 12:1-8

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” 4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to

8 him. 8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

M: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 4:1-5,13-17

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

M: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: John 3:1-17

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

M: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

SERMON SONG: What Wondrous Love Is This (Koine)

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this That caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down Beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, Who is the great I Am, While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, While millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on. And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing his love for me, And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, And through eternity I’ll sing on.

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: As sons and daughters of Abraham according to the promise, we come to you this day, O Lord, to pray for ourselves, for the sick, for the Church, for the nation and for all people according to their needs.

Brief silence

12

M: O Lord, to Abraham you gave the promise of many descendants. Give to us faith, that we may delight in your promise through the ages that was kept in Christ, our Savior, and never waver from it. Equip us with your Spirit, that we may be bold in witness and faithful in mission, carrying your name and your Gospel to every place and people. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: O Lord, to us you have given a righteousness not our own, bestowed upon us in Baptism and daily worn by faith. Grant that we may have courage and conviction to live without fear and in holiness the new lives of faith you have given us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: O Lord, through patriarchs and prophets you spoke your Word. Bless all pastors and teachers, that they may faithfully preach and teach your Word. Raise up many young people for service in the church, and bless them as they prepare in college and seminary. Give us ears to hear and hearts to heed their proclamation and service in your name. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: O Lord, to protect us you have established rulers and earthly authorities. Bless our president, our governor; the Congress of these United States; the legislature of this state; and all who make, administer and judge our laws. Help us to preserve our liberty and use its gift wisely in the pursuit of justice and for the welfare of all people. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

M: O Lord, to heal your people and give them everlasting life you sent your own Son as our Savior. By your Word and Spirit, lift up your people from their sorrows, heal them according to your gracious will, and deliver them from the pain of death to eternal life (we pray especially for …). Sustain them in their afflictions, comfort them in the hour of death, and raise up the dead in Christ according to your gracious promise, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

13

Special prayers and intercessions.

M: O Lord, to Nicodemus your Son brought hope and the promise of new birth and everlasting life. Give to us the same hope and confirm in us faith in the same promise, that we may have confidence in your grace and trust you to provide all things needed for this body and life and for everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

BLESSING

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: Amen.
