Building on previous comparative research done within the framework of the Hombori Project, the report more particularly analyses the profiles of the tourists visiting the region and the transformations brought to Hombori by the increase of tourism. The Hombori Project The Hombori Project is a multidisciplinary research project whose aim is to contribute to the long-term biodiversity monitoring and locally supported protection of the Hombori region in Mali. Several field researches have been conducted so far in order to characterize the biological diversity and study the impact of human activities on biodiversity. Research done by geographers have, in parallel, studied the emergence of Hombori as a tourist destination and examined the potential threats and opportunities that tourism could bring to the region. Photos presented were taken during some twenty trips spread over as many years. All these journeys were made on foot in the company of my friends Ana and Serou Dolo, sons of Diangouno Dolo, the late chief of Sangha. Today Ana is the owner of Hôtel Campement Gir-Yam in Sangha and Serou specializes in the building of wells and other water retention structures. Apart from some personal observations, the text that follows is based on the numerous ethnographic studies that have been conducted in Dogon country. It is an attempt to put a selection of photos in its cultural and historical context. -

For the fine points, some knowledge of HS phonology and morphology is presupposed (consult the grammar). Cognates in other Songhay languages, and related forms in Fulfulde and other languages, are given selectively. Headword transcriptions are “underlying,” prior to tonal interactions with adjacent words. In phrases and sentences, verbs undergo tonal changes triggered by preceding constituents including some types of NP, several subject and object pronominals, and certain inflectional particles. Often these elements induce raising of the tone of the verb’s initial syllable (or mora, for monosyllabic stems) from L[ow] to H[igh]. In the dictionary entries, I omit “+H” at the end of words and particles that induce this raising, to avoid clutter; full details are given in the grammar. Singular-subject imperatives also show tone changes due to a final -ŋ̂ suffix that is segmentally deleted after a consonant. For intransitive verbs, the frame that reveals the verb’s lexical tones 3Sg subject à plus verb. For transitive verbs, the best frame is one with 3Sg object allomorph -à:. In example phrases and headwords for compounds, up-arrow at the beginning of a word or morpheme is an index that initial-syllable tone-raising has occurred under the influence of the preceding element, as in gàŋgà [ẁ dú cìɲà] ‘prevented from having rain’. -

Les Dogons, culte des ancêtres et danses des masques Daniel Elouard Agrégé de lettres De la cérémonie de levée du deuil à la fête du Sigui, du manga, paradis où l'eau ne manque jamais, au culte du Lébé, la vie des Dogons est toute entière dominée par l'autorité des anciens et s'organise dans une relation sacrée qui englobe espace familier et nature hostile, passé et fécondité. Daniel Elouard, rédacteur en chef de la revue Notre Histoire, pose ici la question de l'avenir de ce peuple original et de la survie de ses traditions. Chants et danses rituels Monsé, le grand chasseur est mort, et les Dogons, en son honneur, dansent pour que le monde se perpétue. Abstract The purpose of this project is to examine the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle for Kenya’s independence. Traditionally, research on the Mau Mau has focused on the political and socio-economic aspects of Kenya’s anti-colonial struggle. As a result, the place of spirituality and, in particular, the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle has largely been ignored in existing literature. Initially, when KLFA rituals were studied at the height of the Mau Mau struggle, the task was undertaken by colonial anthropologists and psychologists who were often unable to escape the snare of racist and Eurocentric prejudices in their analyses. Subsequent revisionist studies have attempted to be more objective in their analyses, but the focus has mainly been on the elements and details surrounding the actual ceremonies, at the expense of how these rituals impacted individual freedom fighters. -
