Photos presented were taken during some twenty trips spread over as many years. All these journeys were made on foot in the company of my friends Ana and Serou Dolo, sons of Diangouno Dolo, the late chief of Sangha. Today Ana is the owner of Hôtel Campement Gir-Yam in Sangha and Serou specializes in the building of wells and other water retention structures. Apart from some personal observations, the text that follows is based on the numerous ethnographic studies that have been conducted in Dogon country. It is an attempt to put a selection of photos in its cultural and historical context. -

Benjamin The Texture of Change: Cloth Commerce and History in West Africa, 1700-1850 Abstract This study re-examines historical change in western Africa during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through the lens of cotton textiles; that is by focusing on the production, exchange and consumption of cotton cloth, including the evolution of clothing practices, through which the region interacted with other parts of the world. It advances a recent scholarly emphasis to re-assert the centrality of African societies to the history of the early modern trade diasporas that shaped developments around the Atlantic Ocean. -

However, over the course of his prolific career spanning the first three decades of the twentieth century, from the Art Nouveau to the Art Deco movements, he was also a chemist, musician, composer, poet, critic, and theatrical costume designer. Born in Paris, Bénédictus entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in 1897 and, in 1900, he traveled to Darmstadt, Germany, to study chemistry, an interest that he continued to pursue after his return to Paris. Between 1900 and 1910, he worked primarily in cuir incrusté (inlaid leather), a technique for which he became well known; his panels and boxes featuring flowers, birds, and animals were regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. He also provided the illustrations for a series of articles by the artist Maurice Verneuil for Art et Décoration on adapting motifs from nature for decorative purposes. Bénédictus’s renderings of insects, reptiles, and butterflies reflect the sinuous, organic forms of the Art Nouveau style. The 1920s represent the high point of Bénédictus’s professional career in terms of his contribution to the Art Deco aesthetic and his public recognition. He produced gouaches with repeating patterns for large-format hand-colored pochoir albums: Variations (1924), Nouvelles Variations (1926), and Relais (published posthumously in 1930). -

Présentation générale Le programme international Paléoenvironnement et peuplement humain en Afrique de l’Ouest, placé sous la coordination générale d’Eric Huysecom (Mission Archéologique et Ethnoarchéologique Suisse en Afrique de l’Ouest MAESAO, Uni- versité de Genève), est mené depuis 1997 sur le site d’Ounjougou au Mali. La par- ticipation suisse à ce projet est cofinancée par le Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique (FNRS) et par la Fondation Suisse-Liechtenstein pour les recherches archéologiques à l’étranger (FSLA)9. La thématique générale de ce pro- gramme de recherche a pour objet l’étude du peuplement humain local présent et passé, ainsi que l’analyse des réponses apportées par ces populations aux varia- tions climatiques et environnementales, par le biais de l’étude du site d’Ounjou- gou sur le plateau de Bandiagara (Huysecom 1996, Huysecom et alii 1998 et 1999). This original and all documents presented in support of this nomination will be available for consultation at the meetings of the Bureau and the Committee. 1. LOCATION: The village of Sangha (Sanga or Songo), on the crest of the Bandiagara plateau escarpment, is located at the centre of the sanctuary. It overlooks the village of Banani at the Bandiagara cliff base, 44km north-east of Bandiagara town and 107km east of Mopti, in the Mopti fifth administrative and economic region. 14°00'-14045'N, 3°00*-3050'W. The sanctuary totals 400,OOOha. 2. JURIDICAL: The area was constituted as a natural and cultural sanctuary, initially based on Ordinance No. 52 of 3 October 1969 regulating the export of objects of art and subsequently by Law No. 85-4O/AN-RM of 26 July 1985 and Decree No. 203/PG-EM of 13 August 1985 safeguarding the cultural heritage, whilst Decree No. 299/PG-l?M of 19 September 1966 relates to the excavation-of sites. The Law No. 68-a/AN-EN of February 1968 sets out the Forestry Code and Ordinance No. 60/U&N of 11 November 1969 sets out the Hunting Code. 3. The sanctuary lies at the southern limit of the-Sahara in an arid aahelian region with averages of 58Ommof rainfall per year. -

Abstract The purpose of this project is to examine the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle for Kenya’s independence. Traditionally, research on the Mau Mau has focused on the political and socio-economic aspects of Kenya’s anti-colonial struggle. As a result, the place of spirituality and, in particular, the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle has largely been ignored in existing literature. Initially, when KLFA rituals were studied at the height of the Mau Mau struggle, the task was undertaken by colonial anthropologists and psychologists who were often unable to escape the snare of racist and Eurocentric prejudices in their analyses. Subsequent revisionist studies have attempted to be more objective in their analyses, but the focus has mainly been on the elements and details surrounding the actual ceremonies, at the expense of how these rituals impacted individual freedom fighters. -
