1 Kingsview Village and Roots of Empathy

The grade four students in Ms Glenday’s class welcomed baby Malachi and his mother Ms Velasquez to room 10 on Wednesday October 28th for the Roots of Empathy program. Every week the students will learn about the development of babies, and once a month they will be visited by the baby and his mother, learning about how babies grow, what babies need, and the important role that we all play in caring about each other and how important the quality of empathy is. We are fortunate to have our skilled staff member Ms Aden leading the program, Ms Velasquez currently on maternity leave participating with her beautiful son, and Ms Glenday offering their support to benefit the students here at the school.

Parents-Are important to a Healthy School-Listen, Talk & Participate Meet & Greet and School Council Meetings

The purpose for having a School Council & Meet and Greet meeting sessions is to foster and strengthen the relationship between the parents, the school administration, and teachers. The intention for these meetings is to positively engage our parents and enable them to participate and discuss our school's education progress, fundraising projects, and learning strategies. Here at Kingsview, we are not only striving to perfect our student’s higher learning standards but we are also building a strong partnership between our school and the parents of our community. Since our parents are an important part of our education system, we encourage you all to be part of our school decision making team and not to miss any scheduled school meetings.

Sincerely, Zahra H. Mohamed Kingsview CSW-TDSB Tel: (416) 884-2893 Email: [email protected]

2 Don’t Litter My Yard! Members of the Kingsview School Council gathered on November 11th to “clean-up” the school yard. With rubber gloves and garbage bags in hand, the volunteers did an amazing job of tidying up, and setting a positive example for the students. After collecting five large bags of trash, the volunteers sat down to enjoy a well deserved cup of tea with cookies. Remembrance Day On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, students and staff at our school and across the city marked Remembrance Day with classroom activities and a school assembly. During Remembrance Day, connections are made between global events and students' lives by promoting peace within our school community. On this solemn occasion, our staff, students, parents, and the wider community all joined together in a call for peace. A huge thank you to our teacher candidates from OISE who organized this wonderful event. Please take a look at the beautiful wreaths created by each class the next time you are in the school

3 Music at Kingsview

At Kingsview Village we are fortunate to have many wonderful opportunities for our students to learn and experience music as part of the curriculum, and as part of cultural and social celebrations. The primary classes receive musical instruction from Ms Gilmour and Ms Tye. Kingsview offers a keyboard program and our primary choir has begun practicing for the upcoming concert in December. Our junior students also have had an opportunity to develop their musical skills, through drumming. We are fortunate to have our own drums at the school and to be able to offer this opportunity to many of our junior students. Both Mr. Kim and Mr. Kozakavich participated in a number of professional development sessions over the past few year, gaining experience and expertise using the drums and have begun weekly sessions introducing the students to this wonderful instrument.
