  • Irrevocability in Games
IRREVOCABILITY IN GAMES Interactive Qualifying Project Report completed in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Science degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA Submitted to: Professor Brian Moriarty Daniel White Michael Grossfeld 1 Abstract This report examines the history and future application of irrevocability in video games. Decision making is an essential part of playing video games and irrevocability negates replayability by disallowing alternate decisions. We found that successful games with this theme exhibit irreversibility in both story and game mechanics. Future games looking to use irrevocability well must create an ownership that the player feels towards the experience by balancing these two mechanics. 2 Table of Contents IRREVOCABILITY IN GAMES .............................................................................................................. 1 Abstract .................................................................................................................................................... 2 Table of Contents ................................................................................................................................... 3 Part One: Concept of Irrevocability ................................................................................................ 4 Introduction .......................................................................................................................................................... 4 Part Two: Chronology of Irrevocability ........................................................................................

Effects of community’s monetary engagement on the quality of the final product The game development on Kickstarter MASTER PROJECT THESIS WITHIN: Informatics NUMBER OF CREDITS: 30 PROGRAMME OF STUDY: Information Architecture AUTHORS: Vojciech Sobolevski & Gözde Meydan JÖNKÖPING 05 2021 Master Thesis in Informatics Title: Effects of community’s monetary engagement on the quality of the final product Authors: V. Sobolevski and G. Meydan Tutors: Ahmad Ghazawneh and Osama Mansour Date: 2021-05-22 Key terms: Platform, crowdfunding, game development, Kickstarter. Abstract Kickstarter is a relatively new platform that has risen from coordinating a group of friends and like-minded people to finance some niched and highly unique projects, to the platform, where strangers from all around the world, finance the work of their favorite creators in hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. The academic literature and general focus of the public was concentrated to find what makes a campaign successful, advantages of the platform and its origins. We, the authors of this paper, believe that Kickstarter is continuously evolving, which raises some new questions, not of its history and use, but rather of its future potential and what happens, when the campaigns are won. We will look into how backers interact with the creators through monetary engagement and if these creators are able to deliver quality products when provided with much more resources. Our focus on the game industry allows us to see if Kickstarter performs well within the market, where big players exist with experience and lots of funding. If Kickstarter’s developers will be able to keep up with the industry leaders, using financing through crowdfunding, the platform might become a serious financial player similar to venture capitalists or angel investors.

LEAVING IN THE PAST: THE ROLE HISTORY PLAYS IN VIDEO GAMES by JOSEPH FORDHAM (Under the Direction of Craig Roell) ABSTRACT How can something considered by many within academia as childish or a waste of time be potentially useful in presenting or even studying history? Not only has the video game industry grown into one of the largest forms of media in the world, but these games are also finding use as a training aid for the military and major companies, as an advertising medium, and, most importantly, as a tool for teaching. As developmental capabilities improve with new generations of graphics hardware, video games are turning towards the recreation of real-world and historical events. This drive towards realism and accuracy also brings an increase in the amount of historical research done in order to insure the accuracy of a game’s content.

  • 1 Bodies in Play: Representations of Disability in 8
Bodies in Play: Representations of Disability in 8- and 16-bit Video Game Soundscapes Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana M. Plank, MM Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2018 Dissertation Committee Arved Ashby, Advisor Graeme Boone David Bruenger Neil Lerner 1 Copyrighted by Dana M. Plank 2018 2 Abstract This dissertation explores sonic signifiers of injury, disease, and mental illness in 8- and 16- bit video game soundscapes. The immediacy and invasiveness of the medium makes game sound uniquely positioned to influence players’ personal identification and immersion within the narrative, and incorporation within the body of the avatar. Games replicate social discourse about the meanings of bodies, and tell stories that matter in a medium that engenders an unusually deep personal engagement. In order to confront these sonic signifiers, I subject my own transcriptions of game audio to analysis drawing on disability studies, ludomusicology (the study of music and play, usually focusing on video games), and music cognition literatures to implicate games in broader discourses of human difference and media representation. In games, bodily impairments are treated not as part of a nuanced spectrum of lived experience, but as obstacles to overcome. Game sound often represents these mechanics in the abstract, to communicate changes in game states to the player, and so the soundscape becomes a vital arbiter of meaning and action. Players’ responses to these aural cues is to seek a cure, reading disabilities as temporary setbacks in performance, cues to restore the avatar to “normal.” Game sounds reinforce ableist ideals, promoting an unrealistic view of the idealized normative body and mind as achievable constants and reflecting deep cultural anxieties about the implications of bodily difference.
