Cg GENERAL INFORMATION Warsaw Is the Capital of Poland ti@ GENERAL INFORMATION Warsaw is the capital of Poland and its administrative, political, and financial center. Home to a great number of well-educated, talented and capable young people, the city is easily accessible, with a fast- growing GDP and high quality of life. It is the largest city in Poland with the area of 517 square kilometres and almost 1.8 million residents (more than 3 million in the metropolitan area). The city has wide cultural offer, thriving restaurant scene and 79 parks. WARSAW HISTORY During the World War II, the central area of the city was almost entirely destroyed. After the war, a five- year reconstruction campaign by its citizens resulted in today's meticulous restoration of the Old Town, with its churches, the royal castle and market-places. It is an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The first settlements in the area of the city date back to the 13th century; Warsaw became the capital of Poland in 1596. VISTULA RIVERBANK Spending time by the Vistula riverbank in Warsaw becomes more and more popular each year. In the middle of a busy city, it offers an escape from noise and traffic into the atmosphere of a lazy vacation day. Spacious beaches, green areas, numerous restaurants, clubs and cafes, sport clubs and a broad sailing offer are only a few things to do or places to visit there. The City realises projects regarding the river making sure that the 19th district – an unofficial name given to the revived river area -has something for everyone. Tourists can enjoy a stroll along the Vistula boulevards, the amazing light and music show in the Multimedia Fountain Park, or a picnic on one of the many Vistula beaches. Partying enthusiasts will have a chance to visit clubs and cafes along the river, and dance till dawn at warm weekends. The more visitors, the more ideas and possibilities for a fun and relaxing time. • Perceived Façade Colours in Different Daylight Situations: Survey in the Old Town of Warsaw
Journal of the International Colour Association (2017): 17, 92-119 Sochocka and Fridell Anter Perceived façade colours in different daylight situations: Survey in the Old Town of Warsaw Anna Sochocka1,2 and Karin Fridell Anter3 1Faculty of Architecture WUT, Warsaw, Poland 2Faculty of Architecture NTNU, Trondheim, Norway 3SYN-TES Colour and Light Network, Sweden Emails: [email protected]; [email protected] The study was initiated by a debate on the methods for selecting façade colours in the reconstruction of the Old Town in Warsaw. In this debate, the difference between the nominal façade colour and the façade colour as perceived in the cityscape was not acknowledged. The nominal colour is here defined as the colour that the surface would have if viewed in the standardised situation used in the definition of Natural Colour System (NCS) samples, including standard light, viewing distance and surrounding colours. The nominal colour is expressed through the NCS notation of the colour sample that is the most similar to the façade in direct comparison, and for a newly painted façade it corresponds to the NCS notation of the paint. The aim of the present study is to investigate the difference between perceived colour as seen from a distance of approximately thirty metres, and the nominal colour of the same façades. The method is based on previously published work by Fridell Anter using the NCS for survey and analysis. The perceived colours of nine façades are determined under different weather conditions, in a total of 84 observations. The analysis shows that the perceived blackness of the façades is generally lower than the nominal blackness.

They witnessed the country’s complicated past and its many transformations. fter countless wars, partitions and other political and social turbulences, Athe preserved and restored castles and palaces are now part of Poland’s histori- cal heritage. Despite the wartime destruction, priceless monuments of the past remained untouched in many places. Others were restored or reconstructed with such meticulous care that they became works of art no less important than the original structures. By far, the boldest such undertaking was the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Whether preserved or restored, castles and palaces are full of life these days. They are homes to museums and/or education centres. They are venues for cultural events or out-of- doors Sound and Light events. They function as luxury hotels with spa facilities, while res- taurants in castles and palaces take diners on journeys to the times of hunters’ parties and opulent feasts of the Polish nobility of olden days. ▶ ▶ Many layers of history are still waiting to be discovered. They are hidden either in Medieval strongholds made of earth, stones and wood, or in ruined, but still impressive, fortifications, or in castles of the Teutonic Knights, or in castles rearranged by aristocrats to become family residences, each more opulent than the last.

It is one of the most famous old districts in Poland today and was the center of Poland's political life from 1038 until King Sigismund III Vasa relocated his court to Warsaw in 1596. Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines The Wieliczka Salt Mine, located in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, lies within the Kraków metropolitan area. It is one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest. Historic Centre of Warsaw Warsaw's Old Town was established in the 13th century. Initially surrounded by an earthwork rampart, prior to 1339 it was fortified with brick city walls. The town originally grew up around the castle of the Dukes of Mazovia that later became the Royal castle. Old City of Zamość Jan Zamoyski commissioned the Italian architect Bernardo Morando to design the city that would be based on the anthropomorphic concept. The main distinguishing features of the Old Town have been well preserved since its establishment. It includes the regular Great Market Square of 100 x 100 meters with the splendid Townhall and so-called Armenian houses, as well as the fragments of the original fortress and fortifications, including those from the period of the Russian occupation in the 19th century.
