Guernsey (Channel Islands) chamber of commerce, members in 1808-9. The following is a list of the chamber members at the start of the modern chamber, which has had a nearly continuous existence since 1808, though there was a gap of activity 1819-32, and a reconstitution in 1849. There was also an earlier Guernsey chamber, founded in 1769, which continued until the 1790s (q.v.). It has not been possible to establish whether there was any continuity of members in the 1808 chamber from those earlier. More information on the earlier chamber is much needed. N = 68. Note that there is uncertainty about the spelling of some names; all but 4 of the 17 partners of the States of Guernsey Bank founded in 1827 were chamber members by that date. Sources: The main entries come from the chamber’s minutes; additional material added from directories; further discussion in R. J. Bennett (2011) Local business voice, especially pp. 148-52, 223-4; also Gregory Stevens Cox (1983) The Guernsey Chamber of Commerce 1808-1983: A celebration of 175 years of activity (Guernsey: Chamber of Commerce). The directories for Guernsey at this time are very meagre so that the type of business in many cases is not fully clear; more information most welcome. Most of those with no attributed business are probably shippers and merchants. Member Office Business Allaire, John jun.
