These days, fields of poppies are a rare spectacle, thanks to improved agricultural seed cleaning and herbicide use.

The Parish, supported by the Bloom Group, has identified a site to develop a field of poppies and an interpretation of a WW1 trench to commemorate the events of 1914. The States of Jersey Development Company administer the site and have given kind permission. Local companies are showing support for this project, as well as valuable advice and guidance being provided by Howard Baker and Geomarine amongst other authorities. The project will give the opportunity for schools to visit the site, as well as creating a poppy field in the heart of St Helier as a mark of remembrance. TB Davis’ love for sailing and Jersey no doubt contributed to his decision to buy a lifeboat for the island. In August 1936, at a cost of £3,623, Davis purchased the first motorized lifeboat to be stationed at St Helier. The Howard D saw service throughout the occupation during the Second World War and wasn’t replaced until 1948. During its service in Jersey the Howard D was launched seventy times and saved sixty-six lives. After leaving the RNLI the boat was used as a fishing boat in England before being returned to Jersey around 2000 where she was carefully restored by volunteers at the Maritime Museum. When you enter Howard Davis Park through its magnificent gates, a statue of King George V stands proud before you. The statue was commissioned by Davis and, in searching for a suitable site, he decided to purchase Plaisance which was the home of Jersey born barrister and politician, Sir Bertram Falle. It is poignant that, as a child, Davis had lived opposite Plaisance and was a parishioner of St Luke’s Church.

On acquiring the estate Davis set about turning it into a memorial park in honour of his son. He demolished the mansion but kept the billiard room, which is now called the Howard Davis Memorial Hall and houses Howard’s medals and family photos.

The park receives thousands of visitors every year and among the many events that take place in the summer is the annual Big Gig In The Park attracting international performers from all over the world.

Cambodia is now playing economic catch up with Thailand and Vietnam but make no mistake, this country has suffered badly – the unspeakable genocide of the late 1970s affected the entire nation. If you have the stomach for it the killing fields are on the outskirts of the city – but be warned, this is part of the country’s history that is not for the faint hearted.

The capital Phnom Penh still has a French colonial feel about it. The Royal Palace and the National Museum in particular are well worth a visit.
