Her runner up – in what the judges, Chris Le Cornu, Lynne Hine and Sue Neil, described as an extremely close decision - was Sophia de Sousa. A 16-year-old student at Beaulieu, reading Biology, Chemistry, English Literature and Psychology, Sophia’s ambition is to study for the medical profession. An accomplished communicator, she is also a globe-trotter with eyes on life in the United States, though, for the present, she relishes the quiet atmosphere of the lanes and countryside of her native St Clement. Ebony bids farewell So it was time for Ebony Troy to hand over her sash and tiara to much acclaim from parishioners who have witnessed her busy and committed year as Miss St Clement. To the delight of the audience, she assured them of her continuing involvement in Parish activities.

From the Connétable Along with the celebrations of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday, the highlight of the past couple of months should have been the commemoration of Liberation Day. I’m not so sure it could be called a ‘highlight’ given the weather and the power cut that threatened to spoil the event even before it began. Even so, the re-enactment in Liberation Square was certainly memorable. It says much for the people who were there, and those conducting and involved in the service, that we were not put off and despite all the difficulties we celebrated the 71st anniversary of the most important day in our recent history in fine style. As always, there was great turnout from our Parish and I thank Julie, Mary, Kay and Chris for ensuring that everyone was where they should be on time and returned safely after the event. A warm welcome to Lucie Hosking in her role as Parish ambassador in 2016 and very many thanks to Ebony Troy who carried out her duties as Miss St Clement with much grace and commitment throughout 2015. I am very pleased that our Chef de Police, Centenier Eddie Caldeira, was re-elected unopposed at a recent Electoral Assembly. Eddie is a first class Officer, having served the Parish since November 2003 and will receive the Queen’s Long Service and Meritorious Conduct medal later this year. Very well deserved. His colleague, Centenier Peter Ward received this medal in 2015, but sadly he has now been forced to retire from the Honorary Police on health grounds. We thank Peter for the wonderful service he has given to the Parish and parishioners and wish him well in his retirement, and, more, importantly, a quick return to full health. We were all shocked to learn of the sudden death of Constable’s Officer Wayne Lewis at the beginning of May. Wayne was an excellent officer, always willing and able with a courteous and positive disposition. We miss him very much and our thoughts are with his family and partner, Betty. Looking ahead, please try to keep the evening of Tuesday 28 June free as that is the date of the to receive the Parish accounts for the financial year just past, receive and approve the estimates for the current financial year and set the Parish rate. It’s an important event as it gives parishioners the opportunity to review the running of Parish affairs. The meeting will start at 7.00pm, so I hope to see you there. PC 693 Amanda Ingram, our Parish Community Officer, has quickly established a warm and active presence, visiting institutions and events and meeting residents on the street. As a new feature for L’Amarrage, she has agreed to bring us regular updates of Parish life as seen from her side of the blue line.

Dear Parishioners, I have been your Community Police Officer for just over a year now and will continue to provide the best possible service to the Parish. My police pedal cycle has been serviced and is ready to go, so keep a look out for me pedalling around! On the subject of pedal cycles, the ongoing issue of bikes being stolen continues, so please where possible keep them secure and out of sight. I urge you to register your bike to deter thieves and you can contact me to arrange for your bike to be marked. If you are unlucky enough to be a victim of bike crime, please report it to us. Likewise, if you see a bike abandoned, please report it to the police or the Parish Hall. They will be collected and hopefully returned to the rightful owner. Now that summer is upon us and we’re tending to pop out to enjoy the sunshine, please may I remind you to ensure that you secure your doors and windows when you are not at home. Another issue, which is frequently brought to my attention, is dog fouling, both on the beaches and surrounding areas. I will be conducting regular patrols in these areas. Samarès School Round-up Below: Come back later How did we pack it all in?

We’re arriving at the point in the year when students and pupils of all ages face the prospect of reviewing the past academic year and - in some cases preparing to move on. (You’ll find more than one example in this edition.) Year 6 pupils aged 10 – 11 in the last year at Samarès School, felt they’d had such an exciting and busy year, they decided to let L’Amarrage readers hear all about it. Here is a compilation of their experiences in their own words – even, we’re assured, the last paragraph!

Winter2013Summer2016St Clément Parishp35 Magazine p15 Have your say on our future Critics of our government frequently accuse it of lacking ‘joined-up thinking’. There have indeed been many examples of conflicting priorities and missed opportunities to deliver a long-term strategy for the benefit of all islanders. In attempt to address this, the Council of Ministers has launched a ‘community consultation’ exercise entitled Shaping our Future, designed to involve all shades of opinion in drawing up a blueprint for the future. The plan is to focus way beyond the election cycle and to address future social, economic and environmental challenges which will help guide decisions on issues that will shape every Jersey resident’s quality of life 20 years from now. A big part of the consultation is an online survey, which asks how people think Jersey is doing now and how they’d like it to be doing in the future. Launching the survey, Chief Minister Senator Ian Gorst said, ‘No- one knows exactly how life in Jersey will be 20 years from now, but we can say how we’d like things to turn out. I hope the Shaping Our Future consultation will give our community a chance to say what they value most about Jersey today, so we can develop some shared aspirations for our future and make Jersey a better place for ourselves and our families to respect and enjoy.’ You can find the survey at www.shapingourfuture.je. It’s quick and easy to use and you’ll see your results at the end. Please share it with friends and family. The deadline to take part is Friday 15 July 2016. make theirmark Outdoors, they massed to support catering for the Easter Football Festival – in which Jersey teams did rather well, winning all six matches. Indoors, the organisation marked their centenary in 2015 by coming together to produce a work of art which morphed into an entry at the Eisteddfod Spring Festival of creative arts. It took the form of a wall-hanging representing every branch across the Island. Each panel was stitched together, and, in the appropriate context of the RJAHs showground in Trinity where the exhibition was displayed, it provided a blanket for an appreciative - if inanimate - Jersey cow.
