The main auditorium is serviced by two licensed bars and a foyer area and is fully DDA compliant.     1 The spiky and jarring Demons’ Chorus in Edward Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius includes the words: ‘What’s a saint? One whose breath doth the air taint before his death!’ What is a Christian saint? We’ve not long recovered from Christmas which celebrates the feast of St Nicholas, Santa Claus in his modern American makeover, and this month sees St Valentine’s Day on the 14th. The legend of St Nicholas, a 4th century bishop of Myra in south west Turkey, has him giving three bags of gold to three girls for their marriage dowries to save them from prostitution, while St Valentine was a 3rd century bishop who suffered martyrdom. What linked him with lovers is obscure, but certainly birds were believed to pair on the 14th of February, which also marked the Roman feast of Lupercalia celebrating fertility, when youths ran around striking women with goat-skin thongs. The 1st of March marks the feast of St David, patron saint of Wales. Often how the legends of saints and martyrs developed is obscure, but such legends are very widespread and powerful. Among other things, they offer us a sense of identity; and strikingly, as in the great persecutions of Christians in the 3rd and 4th centuries, they often involve folk from very humble backgrounds. For example, young girls like the 3rd century North Africans Perpetua and her slave, Felicity, who showed remarkable courage facing the cruellest tortures. Violent state persecution certainly left its mark on early Christians; as an early Christian writer put it: ‘The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.’ Unfortunately, Christians are still being martyred for their faith, with the Pope turning contemporary Christian martyrs like Archbishop Oscar Romero into saints.

This thesis "examinee,,, its to life , . stand-up comedy and relation everyday and presents a model of everyday life in the commodity society. It seeks to define stand up comedy and how it works as a performance mode and will offer a definition of the stand-up comedian. It will examine how jokes reflect opinions and attitudes within everyday life and how they can communicate negative cultural myths, stereotypes and ideologies but also reach beyond the merely absurd and comical to present authentic moments that enable us to locate the truth about ourselves. The thesis seeks to locate a stand-up comedy that enables us to understand ourselves in relation to life in the commodity society. The thesis traces a subversive lineage through post-Second World War comedy from The Goon Show through the satirists of the 1960s and Monty Pylhon's Flying Circus to Alternative Comedy and stand-up comedians in the present day. The 'Alternative Comedy moment' between 1979 and 1981 is central to the thesis as is the relation to American stand-up comedy, Punk and the rise of reactionary humour in Britain. Alternative Comedy is identified and placed in a social, political and counter-cultural context. The achievements and failures of this comedy will be discussed with particular focus on the redefinition of the role of women and sexual politics in stand-up comedy and the creation of a thriving London cabaret and comedy scene.

With Tom, he had that wonderful expression - that he could look at things and...you see, when you do...like an idiot; and I say we're ail idiots because we're making a mess of this world...and the real people I love are the people who know they're idiots.     Boxmoor and District Probus Monthly Newsletter Number 3, June 2020 A Message From The Outgoing Chairman You will by now have seen the message from the Club Secretary in which he explained how the Club will move forward during the restrictions placed upon our activity by the Covid-19 virus. In taking its decisions the Committee‘s primary concerns were the continuity of the Club and the welfare of the members. At the time of writing this I am still Chairman but by the time you read it I will have handed over to Andy Cunningham. I wish him well in his year of office and hope that we can resume operations in time for him to enjoy undertaking the normal tasks of the Club Chairman. The AGM gives the outgoing Chairman the opportunity to give a short address in which he reviews his year in office and gives his personal thanks to those who have contributed to the running of the Club. As we are not holding an AGM this year I will take the opportunity to write it down and publish it here in the Newsletter. At the moment the Covid-19 virus, the lockdown and all that they entail are prominent in our minds and, I have to say, have occupied the minds of the Committee a great deal in the last two and a half months. It is easy to forget that prior to the current situation we had been having a pretty good year. The Secretary mentioned some of our activities in the report that he distributed.
