Foreword – Pullman Attendant by Bert Hollick, 1991 In 1935, fifteen year old Bert Hollick signed on at Brighton Station for his first shift on a Pullman Train. Working on the midnight shift from Victoria to Brighton including the famous Brighton Belle, he learned to ladle soup from a tureen at seventy-five miles per hour and serve a three-course lunch in a speedy fifty-eight minutes. Bert’s life story is told in a style that conveys wonderfully the atmosphere of the Pullman Cars, as well as providing interesting factual details of railway life. Bert worked at a time when a twelve to fourteen hour day was commonplace, and wages were a meagre £2 a week, despite providing a luxury service to everyday travellers.

    The history of jazz in Britain has been scrutinised in notable publications including Parsonage (2005) The Evolution of Jazz in Britain, 1880-1935 , McKay (2005) Circular Breathing: The Cultural Politics of Jazz in Britain , Simons (2006) Black British Swing and Moore (forthcoming 2007) Inside British Jazz . This body of literature provides a useful basis for specific consideration of the role of women in British jazz. This area is almost completely unresearched but notable exceptions to this trend include Jen Wilson’s work (in her dissertation entitled Syncopated Ladies: British Jazzwomen 1880-1995 and their Influence on Popular Culture ) and George McKay’s chapter ‘From “Male Music” to Feminist Improvising’ in Circular Breathing . Therefore, this chapter will provide a necessarily selective overview of British women in jazz, and offer some limited exploration of the critical issues raised. It is hoped that this will provide a stimulus for more detailed research in the future. Any consideration of this topic must necessarily foreground Ivy Benson 1, who played a fundamental role in encouraging and inspiring female jazz musicians in Britain through her various ‘all-girl’ bands. Benson was born in Yorkshire in 1913 and learned the piano from the age of five. She was something of a child prodigy, performing on Children’s Hour for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at the age of nine. She also appeared under the name of ‘Baby Benson’ at Working Men’s Clubs (private social clubs founded in the nineteenth century in industrial areas of Great Britain, particularly in the North, with the aim of providing recreation and education for working class men and their families).

    CHANNEL 4 REVIEW OF 2008 Major Themes in 2008 2008 was a year of dramatic creative renewal for Channel 4. In March, the organisation published Next on 4, a policy document laying out its public service vision for the future. Creative renewal in the schedule was evident even before then, with a raft of new programming in January occupying the space occupied in previous years by Celebrity Big Brother, which was rested. Over the course of the year, a range of authored series and campaigning programmes exemplified Channel 4’s renewed commitment to high-impact programming capable of engaging mass-market audiences, stimulating debate and generating interest in important social, political and cultural issues. However, Channel 4’s ability to fulfil its public service ambitions were curtailed by the downturn in the advertising market towards the end of the year, leading to significant reductions in the programming budget for both 2008 and 2009. In an increasingly competitive environment, Channel 4’s portfolio of channels and services maintained its viewing share at 11.9 per cent. The core channel share fell from 8.7 per cent in 2007 to 8.2 per cent in 2008. Next on 4 Dramatic changes are reshaping the UK broadcasting ecology, as it moves towards a fully digital world. Viewers will have access to dozens, if not hundreds of channels, as well as the rapidly growing variety of video services delivered online. The theatre in the arts and the art in the theatre, a sublime melding of purity and mystery, speaks striking truths for those with ears to hear them. “The floors” of theatres today enjoy classical dramatic pieces, as well as the staging of experiments, which in my opinion are a real necessity for the entire development of the creative human spirit. The need for free speech and expression gives us motivation to explore the meaning of the term “classical”. The latest trends in the art of modern dance are represented by a return to expression and theatricality, the narrative genre, as well as the historical account of the development of the plot, the restoration interventions in spoken word, chanting and singing; the concepts of art are undergoing a full recovery.
