Ahead of Kirk Douglas’ 100th birthday this December, BFI Southbank pay tribute to this major Hollywood star with a season of 20 of his greatest films, running from 1 September – 4 October 2016. Over the course of his sixty year career, Douglas became known for playing iconic action heroes, and worked with the some of the greatest Hollywood directors of the 1940s and 1950s including Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick. Films being screened during the season will include musical drama Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1949) alongside Lauren Bacall and Doris Day, Stanley Kubrick’s epic Spartacus (1960), Champion (Mark Robson, 1949) for which he received the first of three Oscar® nominations for Best Actor, and the sci- fi family favourite 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Richard Fleischer, 1954). The season will kick off with a special discussion event Kirk Douglas: The Movies, The Muscles, The Dimple; this event will see a panel of film scholars examine Douglas’ performances and star persona, and explore his particular brand of Hollywood masculinity. Dir. Kenneth Branagh. Perf. Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp. Fox, 2017. In the first scene of Kenneth Branagh’s big-screen adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (1934)—one of Agatha Christie’s three most popular novels, according to a 2015 poll (Flood)—famous Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot plagues the staff members of a Jerusalem hotel with his unusual request for two eggs of identical size. He goes so far as to apply a ruler to his breakfast, only to conclude that it does not meet his requirements. The scene serves as a neat summary of the character that will likely sit well with hardcore Christie admirers—the author famously had Captain Hastings characterize Poirot as a man so meticulous that ‘a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet wound’ (1920/2007: 14)—and the shot of Branagh (the film’s star as well as its director) cowering behind his breakfast table and scrutinizing the eggs sets up Murder on the Orient Express as an adaptation that literally goes ab ovo. It invokes the initial description of the character in Christie’s debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (‘His head was exactly the shape of an egg’, 1920/2007: 14), and at the same time it is indicative of how the film reboots Christie for the twenty-first century, playing up Poirot’s tics while also humanizing him, an adaptive policy that has worked wonders for Sherlock Holmes.

    1 The spiky and jarring Demons’ Chorus in Edward Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius includes the words: ‘What’s a saint? One whose breath doth the air taint before his death!’ What is a Christian saint? We’ve not long recovered from Christmas which celebrates the feast of St Nicholas, Santa Claus in his modern American makeover, and this month sees St Valentine’s Day on the 14th. The legend of St Nicholas, a 4th century bishop of Myra in south west Turkey, has him giving three bags of gold to three girls for their marriage dowries to save them from prostitution, while St Valentine was a 3rd century bishop who suffered martyrdom. What linked him with lovers is obscure, but certainly birds were believed to pair on the 14th of February, which also marked the Roman feast of Lupercalia celebrating fertility, when youths ran around striking women with goat-skin thongs. The 1st of March marks the feast of St David, patron saint of Wales. Often how the legends of saints and martyrs developed is obscure, but such legends are very widespread and powerful. Among other things, they offer us a sense of identity; and strikingly, as in the great persecutions of Christians in the 3rd and 4th centuries, they often involve folk from very humble backgrounds. For example, young girls like the 3rd century North Africans Perpetua and her slave, Felicity, who showed remarkable courage facing the cruellest tortures. Violent state persecution certainly left its mark on early Christians; as an early Christian writer put it: ‘The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.’ Unfortunately, Christians are still being martyred for their faith, with the Pope turning contemporary Christian martyrs like Archbishop Oscar Romero into saints.
