Sundance Institute Announces Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialogue to Be Presented in Morocco September 27-30
SUNDANCE INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES FILM FORWARD: ADVANCING CULTURAL DIALOGUE TO BE PRESENTED IN MOROCCO SEPTEMBER 27-30 Filmmakers Cherien Dabis (Amreeka ) and Emmy Award Winner Stanley Nelson ( Freedom Riders ) Featured Participants for Screenings and Workshops Co-Hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Rabat RABAT, MOROCCO (September 23, 2011) — Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialogue , a Sundance Institute initiative in partnership with U.S. federal cultural agencies, will be presented in the Kingdom of Morocco September 27-30, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Rabat. A selection of films and film- related events will be presented at locations in Tangier, Tetouan, Salé and Casablanca. Filmmakers Cherien Dabis (Amreeka ) and Stanley Nelson ( Freedom Riders ), as well as Caroline Libresco, Senior Programmer at Sundance Institute, will travel to Morocco to represent the initiative and engage with audiences. “In just the first year of this program, we’ve taken films and filmmakers around the world and built a dialogue with audiences in Tunisia, Turkey, China, Kenya, Puerto Rico and several other locations in the U.S.,” said Keri Putnam, Sundance Institute Executive Director. “Though each location is different, audiences are finding common themes and sharing their own experiences. It speaks to the goal of the program – showing the power of film to transcend culture barriers.” Screenings, including some for students and underserved youth, will take place at locations including the Cinematheque de Tanger, the Tangier American Legation Museum in conjunction with the American Language Center, University Abdelmalek Essadi, Abi bakr Errazi Junior High School, Cinema Hollywood, and School of Metiers du Cinema. Private workshops will be held at University Abdelmalek Essadi in Tetouan by Stanley Nelson who will explore the filmmaking challenges he faced with creating a historical film and how to effectively use rich archival footage to create a singular cinematic experience. -

Upon his death in 2012, his son-in-law, Richard Martha, was named Executor of the Estate of Hugh Bell. In 2014, a boutique archival firm, Gartenberg Media Enterprises (GME), was engaged on an exclusive basis by the Bell Estate to manage the collection of Hugh Bell’s photographs and to further the artist’s legacy. GME has a successful track record in identifying, organizing, and placing archival collections of motion pictures, photographs, and paper documents with such institutions as the Library of Congress, The Packard Humanities Institute, and Harvard University, as well as with numerous cultural institutions in Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. The Hugh Bell Archive comprises thousands of vintage prints, negatives, transparencies, contact sheets and digital scans. The archive also contains a limited-edition monograph on the artist’s work entitled Between the Raindrops, and numerous publications, tear sheets, and laminated advertisements in which Bell’s artistic and commercial work appeared. The primary objective of GME is to find a suitable archival home for this invaluable archive of unique photographs. Our additional goal is to promote recognition of Hugh Bell’s work through exhibitions and licensing opportunities. We are pleased to make available a selection of Hugh Bell’s photographs for the upcoming exhibition on Jazz and Art at the Cooper Gallery in January 2016. -

Park City, UT — The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent feature films selected across all categories for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 23–February 2, 2020. The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute’s flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year. Sundance Institute also presents public programs throughout the year and around the world, including Festivals in Hong Kong and London, an international short film tour, an indigenous shorts program, a free summer screening series in Utah, and more. Alongside these public programs, the majority of the nonprofit Institute's resources support independent artists around the world as they make and develop new work, via Labs, direct grants, fellowships, residencies and other strategic and tactical interventions. -

Monday 25 July 2016, London. Ahead of Kirk Douglas’ 100th birthday this December, BFI Southbank pay tribute to this major Hollywood star with a season of 20 of his greatest films, running from 1 September – 4 October 2016. Over the course of his sixty year career, Douglas became known for playing iconic action heroes, and worked with the some of the greatest Hollywood directors of the 1940s and 1950s including Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Kubrick. Films being screened during the season will include musical drama Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1949) alongside Lauren Bacall and Doris Day, Stanley Kubrick’s epic Spartacus (1960), Champion (Mark Robson, 1949) for which he received the first of three Oscar® nominations for Best Actor, and the sci- fi family favourite 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Richard Fleischer, 1954). The season will kick off with a special discussion event Kirk Douglas: The Movies, The Muscles, The Dimple; this event will see a panel of film scholars examine Douglas’ performances and star persona, and explore his particular brand of Hollywood masculinity. Also included in the season will be a screening of Seven Days in May (John Frankenheimer, 1964) which Douglas starred in opposite Ava Gardner; the screening will be introduced by English Heritage who will unveil a new blue plaque in honour of Ava Gardner at her former Knightsbridge home later this year. Born Issur Danielovich into a poor immigrant family in New York State, Kirk Douglas began his path to acting success on a special scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he met Betty Joan Perske (later to become better known as Lauren Bacall), who would play an important role in helping to launch his film career. -

The program is designed to serve the field of American theater by providing resources and development opportunities to generative theater artists. The program includes residency Labs in Wyoming and Massachusetts, which offer a focused and rigorous creative process Sundance Children's and mentorship for artists as they develop new work for the stage. In UT 1 Theater Park City 2018 $65,000 Theatre Inc. addition, participants receive year-round creative and tactical support including dramaturgical input, work-in-progress readings, workshops, and other opportunities. The program also includes Creative Tensions, participatory theater workshops held in cities across the United States that are designed to engage participants in collective conversation through physical movement. To support the Creative Distribution Initiative (CDI), a distribution service and resource for independent filmmakers. CDI is a collection of educational tools and creative funding, marketing, and distribution partnerships created to support independent film. Providing a nonprofit alternative to commercial distribution, CDI allows independent filmmakers to retain the rights to their work and devise their own audience engagement strategies. Review Essay Hollywood and American Politics: The Play's the Thing Sam B. Girgus RONALD REAGAN IN HOLLYWOOD: Movies and Politics. By Stephen Vaughn. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 1994. November 1948 marked the beginning of Ronald Reagan's winter of discontent. He was in London to make a movie with Patricia Neal and Richard Todd, but he could not anticipate this overseas assignment with enthusiasm and hope. He was, in fact, in the depths of personal and professional despair. Cast as the second male lead in this movie, The Hasty Heart, he faced a dubious future as an actor who could neither reach nor sustain the pinnacle of Hollywood stardom that he sought. Equally devastating to him was the condition of his marriage to Jane Wyman. The marriage, which had been publicized as so successful that it could serve as a model for moviegoers, in reality meant a great deal to Reagan, providing him with a sense of well-being and happiness. However, it was at this point doomed, a victim of the reverse directions of Reagan's and Wyman's careers as she moved toward ever greater financial and professional ascendancy. As Stephen Vaughn writes in this important and impressive study of the melding of politics and personality, Patricia Neal, the female star of The Hasty Heart, "remembered him in tears at a New Year's Eve party. 'It was sad,' she said, 'because he did not want a divorce.'" (229) He tried in London to come to terms with what he called his " 'lonely inner world.
