    Mureddu, N.; ‘The Gorgon and the Cross: Rereading the Alexander Mosaic and the House of the Faun at Pompeii’ Rosetta 17: 52 – 71 http://www.rosetta.bham.ac.uk/issue17/mureddu.pdf The Gorgon and the Cross: Rereading the Alexander Mosaic and the House of the Faun at Pompeii Nicola Mureddu Abstract: The House of the Faun is one of the most intriguing buildings in Pompeii. Its striking feature is the presence of several mosaics decorating the whole house, the most representative of which is perhaps the well-known Alexander Mosaic. This new study analyses the interpretation not only of the Alexander Mosaic, but of the whole set decorating the House of the Faun, by considering and comparing with the possible esoteric creeds of the late Hellenism. In the study I suggest that instead of being simply decorative features of a wealthy Samnite, the mosaics are actually linked to each other by a philosophical pattern linked with an unclear esoteric circle, related with either the Heracliteans or the Hermetics. 52 1. The Mosaic and its subject The mosaic of Alexander, found at the House of the Faun at Pompeii is one of the most intriguing representations of an ancient battle (figure 1)1. We no longer possess the original painting from which it was probably copied. Whether the original was completely identical to its transposition in stone or just a model bearing different details in comparison with the mosaic we will never know. The scene preserved by Vesuvius’ lava shows a battle identified as one of the three battles Alexander fought against Darius III Codomannus between 334 and 331 BC.2 Badian thinks he can recognize the last battle, Arbela (or Gaugamela) in the image showed by the mosaic, pointing out that both armies seem to be using Macedonian sarissae, which, according to Diodoros,3 were used only at Gaugamela.4 FIGURE 1: THE ALEXANDER MOSAIC, MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI, PARTICULAR.

These works are part of the wider chronological and geographical context of the ancient Greek world. Twenty six artifacts in total, mainly jewelry, as well as plates, discs, golden bust, coins, pendant and a vial are being examined. Their age dates back to the 6th century. B.C. until the 3rd century A.D. The discussion is about making a symbol of the deceased persist for long in the antiquity and showing the evolution of this form. The earliest forms of the Gorgo of the Archaic period depict a monster demon-like bellows, with feathers, snakes in the head, tongue protruding from the mouth and tusks. Then, in classical times, the gorgonian form appears with human characteristics, while the protruded tusks and the tongue remain. Towards Hellenistic times and until late antiquity, the gorgoneion has characteristics of a beautiful woman. Snakes are the predominant element of this gorgon, which either composes the gargoyle's hairstyle or is plundered like a jewel under its chin. This female figure with the snakes is interwoven with Gorgo- Medusa and the Perseus myth that had a wide reflection throughout the ancient times.

Nel primo disegno delle coppie di donne in varie pose occupano il proscenio e il sipa- rio aperto consente assistere liberamente alla rappresentazione (Fig. 1.1). La teatralità della scena è ovvia, come lo sono gli oggetti del desiderio dello spettatore. Posto di fronte, centralmente, egli assume una posizione tutta sua, che può essere la principale, ma anche noi, benché costretti a guardare dalle quinte, godiamo di una bella vista. Se questo disegno lascia molto poco all’immaginazione, il successivo lascia sicuramente spazio al mistero (Fig. 1.2). In un interno domestico, un mondo privato diventa pubblico. Ma lo diventa davvero? In modo frustrante, ci è dato di vedere solo la scena che si svela a destra. In questo scenario piuttosto prevedibile e convenzionale tra uomo e donna, possiamo prevedere con sicurezza che cosa accadrà.

In the last two decades we have had many books and proceedings of conferences on the concept of magic itself as well as its history, formulas and incantations in antiquity, both in East and West. Much less attention, however, has been paid to the material that was used by the magicians for their conjuring activities. This is the first book of its kind that focuses on the material aspects of magic, such as amulets, drawings, figurines, gems, grimoires, rings, and voodoo dolls. The practice of magic required a specialist expertise that knew how to handle material such as lead, gold, stones, papyrus and terra cotta—material that sometimes was used for specific genres of magic. That is why we present in this well illustrated collection of studies new insights on the materiality of magic in antiquity by studying both the materials used for magic as well as the books in which the expertise was preserved. Gorgonmotiv på grekiska mynt från arkaisk tid Mujkanovic, E. 2020. Gorgon motifs on Archaic Greek coins Gorgonen är en varelse som beskrivs som fruktansvärd i den grekiska antikens litteratur. Den avbildas med stirrande ögon, betar och en hängande tunga. Gorgonen har varit en del av den grekiska antiken sedan dess början och har varit ett populärt motiv på olika material. Det har funnits stort intresse i tidigare studier kring anledningarna till att en sådan varelse valts att avbildas. Motivet har studerats omsorgsfullt när det har smyckat byggnader, rustningar och vaser. En lucka som inte har fyllts än inom ämnet är en djupare undersökning av gorgonmotiven på mynt, vilket även är ämnet för denna studie med syftet att närma sig en förståelse för de funktioner som Gorgonmotiven fyllde på mynt under arkaisk grekisk tid. Studien baseras på ett urval av 42 arkaiska mynt från Aten och Neapolis i Makedonien. Genom Panofskys trestegsmodell analyseras gorgonmotiv som framkommer på mynten och svarar på en rad viktiga underfrågor: Skiljer sig gorgonmotiv åt mellan platser Vilka kombinationer av gorgoner förekommer på mynten? I vilken utsträckning var gorgonmyten kopplad till de platser som använde motivet, vilka andra myter användes på mynten under samma period? Finns det ett samband mellan användningen av gorgonmotiv på mynt och på andra objekt? I uppsatsen bedöms möjliga förklaringar till gorgonmotivet med arkeologiska fynd och antika texter som behandlar gorgonen, varav många pekar mot att gorgonens funktion i allmänhet fyllde ett apotropeiskt syfte.

The shields used by ancient Greeks usually had a nice and varied decoration that was even described by some poets. Here, we shall see the marvellous decoration of the Macedonian shields, as presented on the observe sides of ancient Greek and Greek/Roman coins. Any further information for the coins and the estimated time of their issue is also given. Key words: History, Ancient Greek & Roman coins, Myths, Shields. 1. PROLOGUE In a series of papers (Rovithis-Livaniou & Rovithis 2011–2015), ancient Greek and Roman coins have been presented. Most of them are really very elegant and it is natural that they are considered as small pieces of art. Among them there are some on which the Macedonian shields are presented, and through them we can see and admire the shields’ fine and rich decoration. The shields as a defensive weapon were used by the ancients for protection and were firstly used by the brothers’ Aκρ´ισιoς, Akrisios, and Πρo´ιτo&, Proitos, (Pau- sanias Tour of Greece 2.25.7). They were rather small and made by skin of bulls in the beginning, but later were metallic with various motives for their decoration. For example, goddess Athena’s shield was decorated with Medusa’s cutting head (Apol- lodorus 2.4.3). Medusa’s head, i.e. gorgoneion as is widely known, was offered to the goddess by hero Πρσυ&´ , Perseus[1], because she had helped him.
