    Boase Collection Thomas Sherrer Ross Boase (1898-1974) was Director of the Courtauld between 1937-1947. He had studied medieval history at Oxford and had a lifelong interest in the history of the Church. While based at Cairo during the war years, in charge of British Council activities in the Middle East, he developed an interest in the history of the Crusades and took the opportunity to study Islamic and Christian monuments in the area.     Una scenografia sodomesca, per Jacopo V Appiano di Andrea De Marchi Che Giovannantonio Bazzi, detto il Sodoma, vercellese trapiantato a Siena, avesse lavorato per il signore di Piombino, Jacopo V Appiano, è ricordato dalle fonti e provato da docu- menti certi. Tra l’aprile e il luglio del 1538 corrono lettere di fuoco tra Siena e Piombino: la Repubblica reclama con forza il pittore cavaliere a cui aveva affidato il 6 marzo 1537 l’affresca- tura della cappella di piazza, opera rimasta interrotta. 16 Ma Sodoma preferiva indugiare presso l’Appiano, che aveva ottenuto per lui una dilazione fino alla fine di maggio, tant’è che a luglio era ancora là e il signore di Piombino dovrà scrivere una lettera di raccomandazione, il 13 agosto, perché il pittore non venisse accolto male, al suo rientro a Siena. Il tenore involuto, un po’ spagnolesco, di quella lettera, ci parla già di un committente non comune: Jacopo giustifica nel Sodoma «…la professione del pittore…», per cui «…(sì come a’ poeti spesso avvenir suole) da furore è tirato e sforzato di modo, che volendo dalla presa opera desistere, facilmente non possi…», e al contempo si accusa perché «…quasi allucinato e fatto vago nel operare suo…» l’ha sospinto a trascurare gli impegni senesi, «…nel far piacere a me…». 80 Che l’Appiano fosse personaggio colto ed interessante lo dimostra ad abundantiam la dimestichezza con letterati del calibro di Pietro Aretino, che rispondendo da Venezia all’amico Sodoma, nell’agosto 1545, gli raccomanda «…se aviene, che ve ne andiate, qual mi dite, a Piombino, basciate la mano al Signor suo in 1 mia vece…».

While, on the one hand, they reshaped the nature of their work by bestowing a new identity on the objects they produced, on the other, they tried to redefine their relationship with their clients and patrons. If, on paper, Vasari’s monumental Vite codified these new attitudes for the following centuries, in everyday reality they were little appreciated. The products which artists created, furthermore, were of a particular nature, in part material and in part spiritual. This fact implied a paradox, since the spiritual dimension of the art work imposed itself in the very moment in which the work became an extraordinary market object, thanks to the rise of collecting and patronage. The idea that a work of art is priceless arose precisely when they became very expensive commercial objects, acquiring an important function in the economy of the Italian States. Starting from the writings of Benvenuto Cellini and Vasari’s Ragionamenti, this article discusses the tensions generated by the commercial exchange of the inestimabile.
