  • Living Tradition
Jesus Is Just Alright With Me April 13, 2014 Rev. John L. Saxon I This past year, Karla and I have been preaching a series of sermons on the six sources of what we call the “living tradition” of our Unitarian Universalist faith: direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, that moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life; words and deeds of prophetic women and men that challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love; wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life; humanist teachings that counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, warning us against the idolatries of mind and spirit; and spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions that celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. But wait! That’s just five!!! There’s one more! I wonder what it could be? Let me think. (Pause.) Oh, now I remember! It’s Jewish and Christian teachings that call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves. II Now let’s face it. Claiming Jewish and Christian—especially Christian—teachings as one of the sources of Unitarian Universalism makes some UUs more than a little bit uncomfortable. There’s more than a little bit of truth in the joke that the only time you hear a UU say “Jesus Christ” is when she spills hot coffee in her lap during coffee hour on Sunday.

  • Savoy and Regent Label Discography
Discography of the Savoy/Regent and Associated Labels Savoy was formed in Newark New Jersey in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Fred Mendelsohn. Lubinsky acquired Mendelsohn’s interest in June 1949. Mendelsohn continued as producer for years afterward. Savoy recorded jazz, R&B, blues, gospel and classical. The head of sales was Hy Siegel. Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. Regent recorded the same types of music that Savoy did but later in its operation it became Savoy’s budget label. The Gospel label was formed in Newark NJ in 1958 and recorded and released gospel music. The Sharp label was formed in Newark NJ in 1959 and released R&B and gospel music. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. Some album numbers and all unissued album information is from “The Savoy Label Discography” by Michel Ruppli.

Among his songs the group chose to record was Mr. Tambourine Man. Bob Dylan has say over who first releases one of his songs and, since he didn't care for the Brothers Four's arrangement, it wasn't immediately issued. c01.qxd 2/20/07 9:37 AM Page 3 1 THE POPULAR CULTURE WE ARE IN Whoever marries the spirit of this age will find himself a widower in the next. WILLIAM R. INGE In 1966, sitting in San Francisco’s Fillmore West between two guys who were smoking marijuana on the overstuffed couch, listening to Jefferson Airplane, way before the trendy bracelet told me to, I asked myself, “What would Jesus do?” I was drawn to this question by what I observed around me. It was an age of spiritual yearning and an influential popular culture. It was an age of inauthentic churches and disillusioned youth. I could not have known then what I know now—that San Francisco, famous for its earthquakes, was in fact the epicenter of a cultural quake whose aftershocks are still felt to this day. The culturally seismic sixties gave rise to a powerful, pervasive popular culture offering both what Joni Mitchell described as “a song and a celebration”1 and a hopeful new path to spiritual enlightenment while dialogue about the divine morphed beyond the religious arena and into movies and music suddenly brimming with sacred lyrics. The COPYRIGHTEDDoobie Brothers belted out “Jesus MATERIAL Is Just Alright”; Norman Greenbaum declared, “You gotta have a friend in Jesus, so you know that when you die, he’s gonna recommend you to the spirit in the sky.”2 The Beatles embodied the leap to the East, a widespread interest in Hinduism and Japanese Buddhism. George Harrison, the only Beatle for whom Eastern religion actually stuck, sang his trib- ute to Krishna, “My Sweet Lord.” Joni Mitchell’s “Ladies of the 3 c01.qxd 2/20/07 9:37 AM Page 4 4 THE CULTURALLY SAVVY CHRISTIAN Canyon” weighed in with all the fury and insight of an Old Testa- ment prophet, denouncing consumerism, fame, and apathy about the environment.

  • Harry's Music
Harry’s Music Although Harry’s song list spans more than 4 decades, this sample list of songs represents where Harry came from musically. Most of these songs have played a big role in his development and mindset over many years. All of them bring back great memories of friends and places. More recently he has added some great country songs into his shows, such as songs by Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton, and Thomas Rhett. He cut an album of originals over ten years ago, called “Traynham, Goddard, Cornett,” with Alan Cornett and longtime friend and bass man, Brian Goddard. Many of the cuts were written by Traynham and Goddard. The project was recorded in Boston and the stress of travel and deadlines was too much to handle. At this point, no followup recordings have been planned, but you can listen to the album in the audio section of the website (coming soon). The stage is where the magic is for Harry and that's the way it's always been. • CD Review: Listen Above’S Self-Titled Latest
CD Review: Listen Above’s Self-Titled Latest Almost from its inception into mainstream America with Elvis wiggling his hips on “The Milton Berle Show,” rock music has had an awkward and sometimes downright tumultuous relationship with Christianity. In its earliest years, Baptist preachers across the nation chastened their primarily Caucasian congregations that the very rhythms of this nascent genre would drive their youngsters to a life of debauchery, crime and non-stop fornication! Increasingly with the passage of time, those fire and brimstone predictions began to seem quaint and outdated, as each unfolding generation of rockers pushed their respective envelopes a few steps further. Soon, the once mutually exclusive kinship between religion and rock gave way to a blurring of the lines, with songs like Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky” and The Byrd’s “Jesus Is Just Alright With Me” (later popularized by The Doobie Brothers), mixing heavily distorted guitar licks with praising to the Lord. That said, striking the precise balance between spiritual content and secular sensibilities would always be the key between having a hit single like George Harrison’s timeless classic “My Sweet Lord,” or being resigned to the dustbin of history like the overtly religious, saccharine ‘light metal’ ’80s band Stryper. And striking that exact balance is the latest CD project from Mount Hope High School music teacher / local-music wunderkind, singer-songwriter David “Dj” Lauria and his assembled group of students, friends and family known collectively as Listen Above. Lauria refers to them as a worship group, as they are all members of the youth orchestra at Barrington’s Saint Luke’s Church.
