Living Tradition
Jesus Is Just Alright With Me April 13, 2014 Rev. John L. Saxon I This past year, Karla and I have been preaching a series of sermons on the six sources of what we call the “living tradition” of our Unitarian Universalist faith: direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, that moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life; words and deeds of prophetic women and men that challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love; wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life; humanist teachings that counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, warning us against the idolatries of mind and spirit; and spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions that celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. But wait! That’s just five!!! There’s one more! I wonder what it could be? Let me think. (Pause.) Oh, now I remember! It’s Jewish and Christian teachings that call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves. II Now let’s face it. Claiming Jewish and Christian—especially Christian—teachings as one of the sources of Unitarian Universalism makes some UUs more than a little bit uncomfortable. There’s more than a little bit of truth in the joke that the only time you hear a UU say “Jesus Christ” is when she spills hot coffee in her lap during coffee hour on Sunday. -

ROGER Mcguinn
ROGER McGUINN Biography Jim McGuinn, later known as Roger, was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scene when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds, Roger toured and performed folk music with the Limeliters, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director and guitarist on Judy Collins #3. McGuinn, a Chicago native, studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music and was active on Chicago's folk scene, where he was strongly influenced as a teenager by Bob Gibson. Within a few weeks of finishing high school, McGuinn was working with the Limeliters in California, playing guitar and banjo on their album "Tonight: In Person." McGuinn is also on the Chad Mitchell Trio's albums: "Mighty Day on Campus" and The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End After touring for awhile with singer Bobby Darin, McGuinn moved to New York at Darin's request to work for his publishing company, TM Music, in the fabled Brill Building as a songwriter. He and Frank Gari co wrote the song "Beach Ball" and performed it with Darin, as the City Surfers, on a very rare single, July 1963. After hearing the Beatles for the first time at the Brill Building, Roger began playing folk songs to a rock beat in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village. His experiments in merging folk and rock didn't please the folk purist, so he moved to Los Angeles to work at the Troubadour. -

Book Reviews The major problem some people will have with this book involves the criteria for inclusion. But even here it is not too difficult to fault Stambler's reasoning. The major names are here, and covered well. The lesser-known artists are for the most part not included, or mentioned in other entries. However, there are some admirable examples of influential but lesser-known, bands or artists given full coverage, (e.g., The Blasters, Willy Deville, Nils Lofgren, Greg Kihn, Richard Hell and others). And some attempt has been made to include representative heavy metal, rap and punk artists, though not many appear. While it is obvious that in such an all-encompassing work there are bound to be some errors of omission, how could Stambler leave out a band such as R.E.M.? And how can there be an entry for Ian Matthews' semi-obscure band Southern Comfort, yet nothing for Richard Thompson or Fairport Convention? While the book seems to be mainly accurate and fact-filled, some errors did creep in. In the Mike Bloomfield entry, the late guitarist was credited for a solo album by his cohort Nick Gravenites; The Byrds' 1971 LP "Byrdmaniax" appears without the final letter, and at one point Nils Lofgren's pro-solo band Grin is referred to as Grim. There are no doubt a few others, but admittedly none of these errors are fatal. And though the inclusion of 110 pages of appendices in the form of Gold/Platinum Records and Grammy/Oscar winners is nice, I think most of us would prefer an index. -

Book Reviews greatness, one also realizes how hard he struggled and how much the resulting success validated his life. One reservation concerns the absence of specific musical examples, with which the reader might more readily comprehend the awesome technical complexity of Godowsky's music. Most of his compositions are long out-of-print, and a few specific references, in the case of Godowsky's arrangements of Chopin's Etudes, for example, would have helped Nicholas further explain some of his points. In addition to the basic text, four extensive appendices are provided: a list of Godowsky's compositions, a discography and brief discussion of his recordings, a se lection of programmes, and a "Draft Plan for the World Synod of Music and Musi cians." (This musical master plan was something of an impractical monstrosity, guided by the pianist's typically naive high-mindedness.) It was a relief to discover that Nicholas, in his discussion of Godowsky's recordings, shares this reviewer's largely negative assessment of them. Once again, we are indebted to APR for making us aware of someone most of us have chosen to ignore. This project obviously was a labor of love for Jeremy Nicholas and we must be grateful for his scholarship and persistence in bringing it to fruition. Reviewed by Walter Pate. Savoy and Regent Label Discography
Discography of the Savoy/Regent and Associated Labels Savoy was formed in Newark New Jersey in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Fred Mendelsohn. Lubinsky acquired Mendelsohn’s interest in June 1949. Mendelsohn continued as producer for years afterward. Savoy recorded jazz, R&B, blues, gospel and classical. The head of sales was Hy Siegel. Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. Regent recorded the same types of music that Savoy did but later in its operation it became Savoy’s budget label. The Gospel label was formed in Newark NJ in 1958 and recorded and released gospel music. The Sharp label was formed in Newark NJ in 1959 and released R&B and gospel music. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Students will also consult primary source material—including interviews with several of the musicians, influential literature of the period, and essays by key figures of the movement—in order to gain insight into the social, political,
