  • Vmware and NVIDIA to Enable Next-Gen Hybrid Cloud Architecture and Bring AI to Every Enterprise
VMware and NVIDIA to Enable Next-Gen Hybrid Cloud Architecture and Bring AI to Every Enterprise 300,000-plus VMware Customers Can Benefit from Unified Management of NVIDIA AI Software with All Apps, Tap into Security, Acceleration Capabilities of NVIDIA BlueField-2 DPU VMworld — At VMworld 2020, VMware and NVIDIA today announced a broad partnership to deliver both an end-to-end enterprise platform for AI and a new architecture for data center, cloud and edge that uses NVIDIA® DPUs (data processing units) to support existing and next-generation applications. Through this collaboration, the rich set of AI software available on the NVIDIA NGCTM hub will be integrated into VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware Tanzu. This will help accelerate AI adoption, enabling enterprises to extend existing infrastructure for AI, manage all applications with a single set of operations, and deploy AI-ready infrastructure where the data resides, across the data center, cloud and edge. Additionally, as part of Project Monterey separately announced today, the companies will partner to deliver an architecture for the hybrid cloud based on SmartNIC technology, including NVIDIA’s programmable BlueField®-2 DPU. The combination of VMware Cloud Foundation and NVIDIA BlueField-2 will offer next-generation infrastructure that is purpose-built for the demands of AI, machine learning, high-throughput and data-centric apps. It will also deliver expanded application acceleration beyond AI to all enterprise workloads and provide an extra layer of security through a new architecture that offloads critical data center services from the CPU to SmartNICs and programmable DPUs. “We are partnering with NVIDIA to bring AI to every enterprise; a true democratization of one of the most powerful technologies,” said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware.

  • Executive Summary Introduction
Peeking At the Future with Giant Monster Virtual Machines Executive Summary This technical white paper examines the extraordinary possibilities available when leading edge servers and storage push the boundaries of current technology in terms of capacity and performance. Tests were run with many different configurations of extremely large virtual machines (known as monster virtual machines) and results show that VMware vSphere® 6 successfully managed to run all of the virtual machines in a high performing and efficient manner. vSphere 6 is ready to run the largest systems and workloads of today with great performance. vSphere 6 is also ready for the future to take on the high performant systems and workloads that will become more common in datacenters. Introduction The rate of increases in capacity and performance of computing is dramatic. Starting in 1975, Moore’s law observed that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years. This doubling of transistors has translated into chip performance also doubling every two years. VMware vSphere has also rapidly increased its capacity to support larger virtual machines and hosts to keep up with this compute capacity that increases over time. Two- and four-socket x86-based servers are commonly used today. While the number of cores per socket in these servers does not exactly follow Moore’s law (because each core itself is more powerful with each generation of processors) it can be used as a rough proxy. The current generation Intel Xeon chips have a maximum of 18 cores per socket and 36 logical processes with hyper-threading enabled.

  • S Vmworld 2018 Best of Show
DCIG’s VMworld 2018 Best of Show VMworld provides insight into some of the biggest tech trends occurring in the enterprise data center space and, once again, this year did not disappoint. But amid the literally dozens of vendors showing off their wares on the show floor, here are the four stories or products that caught my attention and earned my “VMworld 2018 Best of Show” recognition at this year’s event. VMworld 2018 Best of Show #1: QoreStor Software-defined Secondary Storage Software defined dedupe in the form of QoreStor has arrived. A few years ago Dell Technologies sold off its Dell Software division that included an assortment (actually a lot) of software products that emerged as Quest Software. Since then, Quest Software has done nothing but innovate like bats out of hell. One of the products coming out of this lab of mad scientists is QoreStor, a stand-alone software-defined secondary storage solution. QoreStor installs on any server hardware platform and works with any backup software. QoreStor provides a free download that will deduplicate up to 1TB of data at no charge. While at least one other vendor (Dell Technologies) offers a deduplication product that is available as a virtual appliance, only Quest QoreStor gives organizations the flexibility to install it on any hardware platform. VMworld 2018 Best of Show #2: LoginVSI Load Testing Stop guessing on the impact of VDI growth with LoginVSI. Right sizing the hardware for a new VDI deployment from any VDI provider (Citrix, Microsoft, VMware, etc.) is hard enough. But to keep the hardware appropriately sized as more VDIs are added or patches and upgrades are made to existing VDI instances, that can be dicey at best and downright impossible at worst.
