SHERRY What was once a dream, then in the planning stage, will soon become a reality — a Haitian pastoral center in the Archdiocese. In making the announcement this week, Archbishop McCarthy said the center would be located in the former Cathedral Rectory on North West Second Avenue in Miami. It will serve the spiritual and social needs of the ever- increasing number of Haitians who have fled their native land for a variety of reasons, including unemployment and human rights problems. The center will supplement the growing involvement of the • Church in resettling the refugees. ARCHBISHOP McCarthy said that two Black Haitian priests will shortly be coming into the Arch- diocese to assist in this particular ministry. He said he had already assigned Father Marcel Feloquin, an American Oblate of Mary Im- maculate.who spent 28 years in the Haitian missions, as director,of the ministry to Haitians. La Iglesia, Pueblo de Dios, experimenta siempre el cumplimiento de este anuncio profético y, con alegría, da continuamente gracias al Señor. Sabe que Jesucristo mismo es el cumplimiento vivo, supremo y definitivo de la promesa de Dios: «Yo soy el buen Pastor» (Jn 10, 11). Él, «el gran Pastor de las ovejas» (Heb 13, 20), encomienda a los apóstoles y a sus sucesores el ministerio de apacentar la grey de Dios (cf. Jn 21, 15ss.; 1 Pe 5, 2). Concretamente, sin sacerdotes la Iglesia no podría vivir aquella obediencia fundamental que se sitúa en el centro mismo de su existencia y de su misión en la historia, esto es, la obediencia al mandato de Jesús «Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las gentes» (Mt 28, 19) y «Haced esto en conmemoración mía» (Lc 22, 19; cf. 1 Cor 11, 24), o sea, el mandato de anunciar el Evangelio y de renovar cada día el sacrificio de su cuerpo entregado y de su sangre derramada por la vida del mundo. Sabemos por la fe que la promesa del Señor no puede fallar.

Este texto representa no sólo el recorrido hecho a partir de la renovación iniciada por el Concilio Vaticano II, sino que constituye también la síntesis aportada por los numerosos obispos del mundo reunidos en el Sínodo de 1977. Usando las palabras de aquel documento, la catequesis «persiGue el doble objetivo de hacer madurar la fe inicial y de educar al verdadero discípulo por medio de un conocimiento más profundo y sistemático de la persona y del mensaje de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo»1. Una tarea ardua que no permite especificar con demasiada riGidez las diferentes fases que implica el proceso catequético. De todas formas, el objetivo, aun siendo difícil permanece inalterado, sobre todo en el contexto cultural de estas décadas. La catequesis, citando lo que escribía San Juan Pablo II, busca «desarrollar, con la ayuda de Dios, una fe aún inicial, promover en plenitud y alimentar diariamente la vida cristiana de los fieles de todas las edades. Se trata en efecto de hacer crecer, a nivel de conocimiento y de vida, el Germen de la fe sembrado por el Espíritu Santo con el primer anuncio y transmitido eficazmente a través del bautismo»2. De este modo, la catequesis permanece inteGrada en la sólida tradición que ha caracterizado la historia del cristianismo desde sus orígenes. Ella persiste como una peculiar actividad formativa de la Iglesia que, respetando las distintas fases de edad de los creyentes, se esfuerza por mantener siempre actual el EvanGelio de Jesucristo para que sea el soporte de un testimonio coherente.
