After leaving a career as mechanical engineer in Bos- ton to focus on art and sculpture, Tristan Shone, the Plans: Touring with new instruments and writing debut creator and sole artist behind AUTHOR & PUNISHER, full length release for Relapse Records. moved west to pursue his MFA in Southern Califor- nia. In the metal and machine shops of University of California, San Diego, Shone forged a relationship with design, sound and fabrication that ultimately yielded AUTHOR & PUNISHER‘s first music and mapped the journey away from traditional instrumentation towards custom made, precision machinery. Shone used his technical knowledge, along with his artistic background to create what Wired Magazine has hailed as his own “special brand of doom metal.” All aspects of the AUTHOR & PUNISHER sound begin with physical movement, limbs struggling in unison to coordinate a wall of electronic rhythm and oscillation, ultimately conditioned by an organic and loose qual- ity absent of plastic perfection.

  • Brutal Belonging in Melbourne's Grindcore Scene
BRUTAL BELONGING IN MELBOURNE’S GRINDCORE SCENE Rosemary Overell ABSTRACT I suggest sociality depends on affective encounters between individuals in particular spaces. Through an ethnography of Melbourne’s grindcore death-metal scene, I examine how belonging in a music scene is constituted by scene members’ affective encounters. In particular, I suggest that a ‘‘brutal’’ disposition is necessary for cultivating the affective intensities necessary for experiencing belonging in the scene. Using scene members’ own under- standings of ‘‘brutal’’ I shift from iconic representations of ‘‘brutality,’’ common in other metal scenes, toward a brutal affect. Here, brutality is experienced as a set of embodied intensities, difficult to articulate, but crucial to understanding how scene members cultivate belonging – in the grindcore scene, and in scenic spaces. INTRODUCTION It seemed like, things were moving forward through y people’s hard work and you could y really get involved and make something of it. y There was a lot of support for new bands and just new people in general y ‘cause y it’s not really a very cool scene. Studies in Symbolic Interaction, Volume 35, 79–99 Copyright r 2010 by Emerald Group Publishing Limited All rights of reproduction in any form reserved ISSN: 0163-2396/doi:10.1108/S0163-2396(2010)0000035009 79 80 ROSEMARY OVERELL Like, there’s not a particular style necessarily, like [in] y black metal – all like the leather jackets and jackets with denim and studs and shit. y Then the hardcore thing with sort of like the fish tattoos and shit like that. There’s not a very definable style, at least not in Melbourne anyway.

  • And the Shifting Geography of the Music Industry Student
….. and the Shifting Geography of the Music Industry Student: Philippe Soret Student Number: 4169808 Advisor: Dr. Huib Ernste Date: June 30, 2013 Word Count: 33,159 1 Preface Relapse Records has been a central pillar of my life since I started working there at age 18. My love of challenging and difficult music has been a part of my life even longer though. As I have worked in the industry through the years, I’ve seen many changes and developments that have been both alarming and reassuring from music that was previously relegated to the underground now being more freely accessible but, at the same time, watching revenue streams shrink on a seemingly weekly basis. This thesis is a manifestation of my desire to better understand the music industry through the eyes of one record label, and bring my experiences and ground these experiences in geographic thought and study. My biggest help in this has been my wife, Laura, who has quietly let me work 80-hour weeks with rarely a complaint. Without her, this thesis could not have been completed. • CRIPPLE BASTARDS Biography 1988-2018
CRIPPLE BASTARDS biography 1988-2018 “In being a surviving unit like Cripple Bastards for some 30 odd years, it takes much persistance, perserverance and an undying spirit to wreck yourself, all out with Brutal- Fucking-Grind. Yeah, I said it. I said Brutal, so what. Brutal. That’s the supposed overused adjective that most ‘heavy’ band bios and descriptions overlook nowadays for fear of oversaturation or an unoriginal ‘old school’ repetitiveness. Thats the one word in the dictionary that C.B. should have fucking copywritten a long time ago. It fits them. It defines them. It IS them. Cripple Bastards are indelibly BRUTAL. In all ways; music, violence, artwork, attitude, politics. All born of this represenatitive and passionately destructive word. The mere fact that C.B. even exist confirms they OWN the goddamn word. C.B. are B-R-U-T-A-L. Understand it NOW. “ (Mike IX Williams, EyeHateGod / Arson Anthem / Outlaw Order 00%) Asti. Northern Italy. March 1988. The consolidation of the friendship and the common passion for extreme violence between drummer/vocalist Giulio the Bastard (aged 14) and guitarist Alberto the Crippler (aged 17), both coming from local thrash/punk bands that didn’t fit their tastes and didn’t match their ambitions, spawned the CRIPPLE BASTARDS. The initial aim of the two youngsters was to keep alive the legendary Italian hardcore spirit of CCM, Negazione, Raw Power, Wretched etc. and to mix it with the fresh extremism of the fastcore / grindcore pioneers releasing records through revolutionary labels like Children of Revolution, Selfish/Japan, Earache, Peaceville and Manic Ears.

  • United Edge Records & Textbook Music Interview
United Edge Records & Textbook Music Interview To me, United Edge Records was one of the record labels that I could pickup anything from and know that it was going to be quality metalcore. Same thing for the post-hardcore fad during the mid-2000’s that was practically held up with Textbook Music in the forefront. It was always quality material. The person responsible for that was Andrea “Edge” Goonan. A native Canadian from Saskatchewan, she moved to Calgary, Alberta and then to New York City in 2002 , where she continued the record label operations there. Andrea has moved on to other things and I wanted to interview her before all those memories faded.
