Brutal Belonging in Melbourne's Grindcore Scene
BRUTAL BELONGING IN MELBOURNE’S GRINDCORE SCENE Rosemary Overell ABSTRACT I suggest sociality depends on affective encounters between individuals in particular spaces. Through an ethnography of Melbourne’s grindcore death-metal scene, I examine how belonging in a music scene is constituted by scene members’ affective encounters. In particular, I suggest that a ‘‘brutal’’ disposition is necessary for cultivating the affective intensities necessary for experiencing belonging in the scene. Using scene members’ own under- standings of ‘‘brutal’’ I shift from iconic representations of ‘‘brutality,’’ common in other metal scenes, toward a brutal affect. Here, brutality is experienced as a set of embodied intensities, difficult to articulate, but crucial to understanding how scene members cultivate belonging – in the grindcore scene, and in scenic spaces. INTRODUCTION It seemed like, things were moving forward through y people’s hard work and you could y really get involved and make something of it. y There was a lot of support for new bands and just new people in general y ‘cause y it’s not really a very cool scene. There’s not a very definable style, at least not in Melbourne anyway. -

FAOUDA WA RUINA: A HISTORY OF MOROCCAN PUNK ROCK AND HEAVY METAL by Brian Trott A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of a Degree of Master of Arts In History at The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee May 2018 ABSTRACT FAOUDA WA RUINA: A HISTORY OF MOROCCAN PUNK ROCK AND HEAVY METAL by Brian Trott The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of Professor Gregory Carter While the punk rock and heavy metal subcultures have spread through much of the world since the 1980s, a heavy metal scene did not take shape in Morocco until the mid-1990s. There had yet to be a punk rock band there until the mid-2000s. In the following paper, I detail the rise of heavy metal in Morocco. Beginning with the early metal scene, I trace through critical moments in its growth, building up to the origins of the Moroccan punk scene and the state of those subcultures in recent years. -
Send Cash, Checks, Or Money Orders Made Payable to “MUTANT POP RECORDS.” QTY
It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop AC Mailorder Catalog Well, Snorkel Bob and I survived our June trip around North America. We logged about 8500 miles and saw a lot of cool stuff, including a June 19 show in NYC featuring DIRT BIKE ANNIE and THE KUNG FU MONKEYS. It was a ton of fun! I’ll blab about the trip next time. First I need to try to sell you some records to keep this crappy label alive! The new Mutant Pop single is a faboo EP by Seattle’s amazing WANNA-BES. Originally from Longview, Washing- ton, home of fellow pop-punkers THE JIMMIES, THE WANNA-BES came into the MP orbit via James from MORAL CRUX, who heard them and urged them to send me a tape. Whew! THE WANNA- BES are definitely one of the most exciting three-chord bands doing their thing today! They have a simple formula, so simple that it’s brilliant: instead of trying to ape Joey Ramone’s voice, Chris Workman and the gang melds the enor- mous RAMONES poppy punk guitar sound with high quality, sweet vocals that sound like they would have been at home in the 1960s invasion of British pop. Not to far afield of GENERATION X or MORAL CRUX or some other punk band that can actually sing, in other words...Very crisp, clean vocals and harmonies over a big guitar roar. Like duh, why hasn’t anyone thought of doing that be- fore? They sound absolutely fantastic, appealing to fans of the classic three- chord punk sound without coming across like lame copycat rehash that has been heard five dozen times before.. -
