Paintal - an internationally acclaimed scientist in the area of cardio-respiratory physiology - died on December 21, 2004. He was born on September 24, 1925 in Mogok, Myanmar, where his father Dr. Man Singh was a physician in the service of the British Medical Service and possessed a strong socialist outlook, while Autar’s mother Rajwans Kaur was a deeply religious lady. Autar’s own life thus came to be moulded by both these systems of belief. At the age of 14, he was sent to Lahore to finish his matriculation, ahead of the evacuation of the family from Burma. Here, besides studying hard and starting on his inexhaustible fund of limericks that he subsequently became famous for, he learnt to row the large country boats that plied on the river Raavi. He stayed on at the Forman Christian College to write the Intermediate Examination of the Panjab University and after that he joined his family in Lucknow where his father chose to settle down. Admission into Medical College in 1943 was an easy matter for him but he needed financial support. Fortunately for him, he still held the status of a ‘Burma Evacuee’ and the Burmese Government came to his support.

The report provides an overview of the wide range of activities and achievements of the Institute in the areas of post-graduate medical education, research and patient-care. Postgraduate medical education is one of the thrust areas of the Institute. Students are trained for DM, MD, DTCD and PhD courses in Pulmonary Medicine, MD and PhD in Biochemistry Physiology, Microbiology and Pharmacology. A large number of physicians, para-medical staff and students from other institutions/ colleges were also trained in various departments of the Institute including summer training. The research contributions from the Institute are widely acclaimed. The vibrancy of these research projects/activities can be well judged from the list of publications in peer-reviewed journals, orations, guest lectures delivered and papers presented in the International and National Conferences by the faculty members and students of the Institute.

These include; the 18th Prof Raman Vishwanathan VPCI Oration was held on 6th April 2016 and was delivered by Prof SK Jindal, former Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh, the 12th Autar Singh Paintal Memorial Oration was delivered by Dr Ashima Anand on 23rd September 2016. Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar, School of Biotechnology, JNU and Chairman Governing Body, VPCI, delivered an invited lecture on “Genetically engineered vaccine against Anthrax: From clone to clinical trial” on 6th August 2016. A QUIZ programme for Post Graduate Students of Respiratory Medicine & General Medicine was organized on 19th August 2016. ICAAICON – 2016, Golden Jubilee National Conference of the Indian College of Allergy, Asthma & Applied Immunology was organized by VPCI from 22nd to 25th October 2016.
