Autar Singh Paintal (1925–2004)
Indian J Physiol Pharmacol 2005; 49 (2) : 247–250 OBITUARY Autar Singh Paintal (1925–2004) What can I say that can change your lives? Perhaps I should ask you to do something that is very difficult. And so I am going to ask you to try to achieve perfection in your chosen areas of activity. (A.S. Paintal at the Institute Convocation of Delhi University of Technology, 1993) Professor Autar S. Paintal - an internationally acclaimed scientist in the area of cardio-respiratory physiology - died on December 21, 2004. He was born on September 24, 1925 in Mogok, Myanmar, where his father Dr. Man Singh was a physician in the service of the British Medical Service and possessed a strong socialist outlook, while Autar’s mother Rajwans Kaur was a deeply religious lady. Autar’s own life thus came to be moulded by both these systems of belief. At the age of 14, he was sent to Lahore to finish his matriculation, ahead of the evacuation of the family from Burma. Here, besides studying hard and starting on his inexhaustible fund of limericks that he subsequently became famous for, he learnt to row the large country boats that plied on the river Raavi. He stayed on at the Forman Christian College to write the Intermediate Examination of the Panjab University and after that he joined his family in Lucknow where his father chose to settle down. Admission into Medical College in 1943 was an easy matter for him but he needed financial support. Fortunately for him, he still held the status of a ‘Burma Evacuee’ and the Burmese Government came to his support. -

GAP GYAN A GLOBAL JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES ( ISSN – 2581-5830 ) Impact Factor – SJIF – 4.998, IIFS - 4.375 Globally peer-reviewed and open access journal. DEVI TO DIVA - A TRANSFORMATIONAL JOURNEY PORTRAYING WOMEN IN MAINSTREAM BOLLYWOOD Prof. Ms. Shivani Ahluwalia Orora, Sinhgad College of Commerce, Mumbai Abstract Bollywood is a major influence on Indian culture. It has shaped and expressed the changing scenarios of modern India .Hindi cinema has influenced the way in which people recognize various aspects of their own lives. Hindi cinema is largely been about stereotypes. The characters, situations and plots have been largely based on stereotypical ideologies. The audience reads the characters based on how they look, dress and talk. Over the years Indian cinema has portrayed women being ‘ The Satti Savitri, The Abla Nari ,The Sanskari ,The Wamp, to The Item Girls ,The Trophies ,The Bold beautiful and empathetic to The Ridiculed Modern women. “The paper begins with how bollywood is instrumental in shaping the culture and how it sketches womanhood. It also undertakes some glimpses from popular films to analyze the process of typecasting. A section is dedicated to the discussion on modern realistic women. In conclusion, a debate ensues on whether the mainstream cinema has been successful in portraying Indian women of different shades in a society dominated by patriarchal values. Keywords: Bollywood, Culture, Modern India, Stereotype, Womanhood, Patriarchal values. INTRODUCTION Women’s participation, performance and portrayal in media are the three important dimensions of study for the social science researchers of modern time, especially for the feminists. Because for the empowerment and development of the women section, it is very important to give them proper environment where they can raise their voices against the inequalities and the gender-gap they are experiencing in our male dominated or patriarchal societies. -

The court’s conservative majority by a 5-4 margin affirmed their earlier decision disallowing any limit on corporate election spending, Everyone knows the im- pact of the court’s ruling that has ushered in an era of unprecedented money power that is unleashed on the citizens of this country, influencing their beliefs and voting patterns. Estimates say, the money raised during the 2012 cycle of elections will exceed an unprecedented three Billion Dollars. If President Obama had vowed to raise a Billion Dollars, his opponent, Mitt Romney is raising more money than the President every month since he secured his Party’s nomination. The Supreme Court ruling not only allows individuals and corporations to INSIDE contribute unlimited money to their respective political parties and candidates, Ambassador Nirupama Rao: but also they could remain anonymous from disclosing their names and the amount to the public. In the name of the First Amendment, corporations and India & USA are uniquely positioned 14 individuals pour in millions of Dollars into campaigns. The irony is that these to address the Grand Challenges of biggest donations are given to tax-free advocacy groups of political parties and the 21st Century campaigns in defiance even of the admonition in Citizens United that indepen- dent contributions should be disclosed.
