As per our annual practice, this Annual Report is presented in six parts comprising I – Univer- sity Authorities and Boards, II – University Departments, Centres and Programmes, III – Achievements of the University Faculty, IV – General Administration, V – Affiliated Colleges, and VI – Recognized Institutions. The Report largely reflects the profiles of the post graduate departments at the University in terms of the major thrust areas of the departments and the significant achievements of both the members of the faculty and the students. The Report is also an indicator of the diverse activities that are conducted in the colleges affiliated to Goa University. It is a pleasure to note that year after year, academic activities continue to be strengthened in both, the University departments as well as in the affiliated institutions. Many colleges have successfully enhanced their infrastructure and the quality of their academic programmes. It is also heartening to note that a large number of technical, scientific and social science related seminars, conferences and workshops have been successfully at the University as well as in the affiliated colleges. The Twenty First Annual Convocation of Goa University was held on February 28, 2009 and was graced by Hon’ble Dr. S. S. Sidhu, the Governor of Goa and Chancellor, Goa University, as the Chief Guest. On this occasion, three stalwart sons of the soil -- Dr. Raghunath A. Mashelkar, former Director General, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Gen. (Retd.) Sunith Francis Rodrigues, AVSM, PSM, former Chief of Army Staff, and Shri Ravindra Kelekar, Dnyanapeeth Awardee and noted litterateur, were awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) of Goa University. During the period, the National Accreditation & Assessment Council (NAAC) reaccredited Goa University with the Grade B. It is heartening to note that the academic ethos of the institution remains healthy. The NAAC Peer Team has specifically lauded the efforts of the University faculty in establishing high standards of academic excellence and has commended the harmonious relationship among all the stakeholders such as students, faculty, non-teaching staff, parents, alumni and the officers of the University. I would like to record my deep appreciation and acknowledgment towards the cooperation and contributions of all the teaching and non-teaching staff members and students towards the achievement and progress of the University during the year 2008-09. Deobagkar Vice Chancellor GOA UNIVERSITY ANNUAL REPORT 2008-09 INTRODUCTION On the threshold of its Silver Jubilee, Goa University has treaded a path of sustained growth since its inception in 1985 around the nucleus of Centre for Post Graduate Instruction and Research of the University of Bombay in Goa. As is expected of an institution on the move, Goa University has grown steadily in terms of its infrastructure, addition of contemporary courses with a dynamic curriculum, and increase in the number of affiliated colleges and recognised institutes. The Annual Report of the University attempts to reflect the various facets of academic and co- curricular activities at the University. The information contained in the pages that follow truly reflect the vibrant academic ethos of the University, its focus on research, and notably the rich contribution of the faculty in terms of research projects, national and international seminars and workshops as well as publications. The Report also reflects the academic ethos of our affiliated colleges and institutes. We are thankful to all heads of University departments and Principals of affiliated colleges who have painstakingly compiled information that is contained in this Report.
