Ainsi en va-t-il du mot chanson, que son omniprésence dans les diction- naires de musique médiévale, les ouvrages philologiques et les éditions critiques, rend problématique : il est parfois difficile de distinguer ­­l’acception médiévale et ­­l’acception moderne. ­­L’introduction du bel inventaire des rondeaux et refrains de Nico van den Boogaard donne une idée frappante de cette ambivalence. Le critique nomme chanson « toutes les ­­compositions monodiques destinées à être chantées, et divi- sées en strophes », ­­c’est-à-dire les « chansons dites à forme fixecomme ­­ la ballade (…) », mais aussi les « chansons définies le plus souvent par leur sujet, telles que les pastourelles, les chansons d’amour,­­ les chansons religieuses (…)1 ». Le mot chanson sert à désigner, on le voit, toutes sortes de poèmes chantés ou chantables, sans prendre en ­­compte le fait que certains ­­d’entre eux sont bel bien présentés ­­comme « chansons » dans les manuscrits, quand d’autres­­ sont plus volontiers présentés par une annonce formelle ou thématique (ballade, pastourelle…)2.

    The Owl in Winter: The Final Tornada of Marcabru’s Pastourelle “L’autrier jost’una sebissa”* Janice Hewlett Koelb Marcabru’s shepherdess in “L’autrier jost’una sebissa” (“The other day beside a hedge”) ends her debate with the lecherous knight by offering a cryptic sentence about manna, an owl, and a person with a painting — topics which appear to have nothing to do with the logical sequence of the debate: “Don, lo cavecs nos aüra que tals bad’en la penchura — qu’autre n’espera la mayna.” [“Sir, the owl shows us That some people gape at a painting — While others hope for manna from heaven.”]1 * I am grateful to Dino S.     THE SHEPHERD‘S SONG: METALITERACY & THEATRICALITY IN FRENCH & ITALIAN PASTORAL by MELINDA A. CRO (Under the Direction of Francis Assaf) ABSTRACT From its inception, pastoral literature has maintained a theatrical quality and an artificiality that not only resonate the escapist nature of the mode but underscore the metaliterary awareness of the author. A popular mode of writing in antiquity and the middle ages, pastoral reached its apex in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with works like Sannazaro‘s Arcadia, Tasso‘s Aminta, and Honoré d‘Urfé‘s Astrée. This study seeks to examine and elucidate the performative qualities of the pastoral imagination in Italian and French literature during its most popular period of expression, from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. Selecting representative works including the pastourelles of Jehan Erart and Guiraut Riquier, the two vernacular pastoral works of Boccaccio, Sannazaro‘s Arcadia, Tasso‘s Aminta, and D‘Urfé‘s Astrée, I offer a comparative analysis of pastoral vernacular literature in France and Italy from the medieval period through the seventeenth century. Additionally, I examine the relationship between the theatricality of the works and their setting. Arcadia serves as a space of freedom of expression for the author. I posit that the pastoral realm of Arcadia is directly inspired not by the Greek mountainous region but by the Italian peninsula, thus facilitating the transposition of Arcadia into the author‘s own geographical area. A secondary concern is the motif of death and loss in the pastoral as a repeated commonplace within the mode. Each of these factors contributes to an understanding of the implicit contract that the author endeavors to forge with the reader, exhorting the latter to be active in the reading process.

    LA PASTOURELLE OCCITANE Au cours des XII et XIIIe siecles, de 1130 a 1300, les troubadours cultivent l'amour épuré serge Caulet lafin'amors-et idédisent les valeurs féodales. De cour en cour, de chfiteau en chfiteau ils allaient, proclamant les hauts faits des rois et des seigneurs dont ils recherchaient la protection. 11s louaient aussi les vertus et la beauté des grandes dames exaltant l'amour qu'ils leur témoignaient. Pour cela ils utilisaient trois formes poétiques: - La canso o&ils exprimaient l'amour dans la forme particuliere de l'amour cour- tois, - Le inventes qui est la chanson traitant dans les formes de la canso tout autre sujet que I'amour, - Enfin la tenso qui est un débat politique. Meme dans les campagnes les troubadours sont restés des poetes de salon a l'exception de Marcabru, peut-etre. Ils utilisent donc les memes temes ponr exprimer I'amour réaliste dans les pastourelles par exemple. Autant que dans les cansos ils célébraient lefin'amor tenus qu'ils étaient de la mezura envers les dames, les troubadours et les barons se mon- traient peu respectueux 2 l'égard de la vertu des jeunes filles qu'ils rencontraient dan~les campagnes. Les pastourelles, albas, romances sont des petites scenes dramatiques dialoguées, d'un caractere plus narratif que lyrique. Ce n'est qu'un genre mineur auprks des "grands gen- res poétiques". Le procédé est tres souvent le meme: un seigneur rencontre une jenne bergere et veut la séduire, la bergere devenant ainsi le symbole de toutes les tentations érotiques. Dans la majorité des cas la vilaine se tire de ce mauvais pas avec beaucoup d'a-propos.

Harvey University of Winnipeg Whereas many works of a religious or moral nature survive from the Anglo-Norman era, secular lyric poetry was until quite recently virtually unknown. 1 Isabel S. T. Aspin's Anglo-Norman Political Songs2 provided the first, and to date the only, readily-accessible modern edition of secular lyrics. 3 This collection of political poems and satires shows that the author of occa­ sional verse is not only interested in singing the praises of the Blessed Virgin Mary or adapting parts of the liturgy into the vernacular; he is moved also to sing of the corruption of state or church, to lament the death of the noble departed, or to applaud the death of a traitor. Many other secular poems were discussed in M. Dominica Legge's Anglo-Norman Literature and its Back­ ground, 4 which further demonstrated that the Anglo-Norman temperament was not always inclined to be serious and utilitarian and that the Anglo­ Norman poet might even on occasion turn to thoughts of love.

    READING MEDIEVAL STUDIES Ovid, Medieval latin and the Pastourelle Generally speaking, when the Wledieval latin Pastourelle is men­ tioned in connection with its vernacular counterparts - French, Provens;al, SfXInish, or even English 1 - the discussion is one of origins. The question asked is 'Which ceme first, the latin or the vernacular? I That the Pastour­ elle is essentially a vernacular genre has been argued (rightly, in my opinion) by scholars such as Jones 2, Bee 3, Zink 4, K8hler 5, and Dronke 6. The theory of latin priority has been most strongly argued by Faro I 7, Delbouille8, Brinkmann 9, and more recently by Paden 10. A somewhat strange, hybrid view is proposed by Siella 11, who seems to see a vernacular form fined by Latin themes. In the course of this article I shall attempt to show what is wrong with the Latin theory and then how the use of Ovid in two Medieval Latin Pastourelles argues for a theory of vernacular origins. To stort with, we need some sort of working definition ofa Pastourelle. Perhaps it is true to say that some of the arguments have arisen be­ cause scholars do not always have the some views on what constitutes a Pastourelle. They attempt to define the genre in such a way as to produce an acceptable 'ur'-form - an unlikely achievement in a genre of vernacular lyric - a form, moreover, based on certain usually unstated assumptions about the original story-line. Even the view that there was a story-line is based on the assumption that the genre was originally narrative.

Outre ces motifs qui concernent le contenu, le rapport variable du déroulement épique et du dialogue savère fondamental. A mesure que ces éléments entrent en ligne de compte, la question de lorigine du genre se complique.     Medieval Terms Ars antiqua: ("The old art") A term used to describe the musical style period of France from 1150 to 1300 (Perotin, etc.). Ars cantus mensurabilis: This treatise written in c1260 by Franco of Cologne introduced the first notation system of long and short notes and rests (long and breve)--known as Franconian notation or mensural notation. Ars nova: ("The new art") A term used to identify the experimental musical style period of France from approximately 1300-1375 (DeVitry, Machaut, etc.). Ars subtilior: ("The subtle art") A term used to describe the highly expressive musical style period of France in the late 1300s/early 1400s (Baude Cordier, etc.). Church Modes: The term for the system of eight "octave species" (dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, hypodorian, hypophrygian, hypolydian, hypomixolydian) formulated originally for the purpose of organizing the repertory of Gregorian chant. Formes fixes: ("Fixed forms") The three French poetic forms that were the primary song forms of the Ars Nova [see "The Structure of the Formes Fixes and the Ballata"], see also the entries for ballade, virelai, rondeau in "Medieval Genres", below]. Isorhythm: ("The same rhythm") A compositional device usually applied to the Tenor of a polyphonic work, featuring a repeated "talea" (rhythmic pattern) and "color" (melodic pattern). Used by DeVitry, Machaut and other French Ars Nova composers. Melisma: Many notes sung on a single syllable of text to put emphasis on that word. Monophonic: A musical texture with one melody played or sung at a time with no harmony. Musica enchiriadis: This writing, dating from c900, is the earliest known treatise to describe polyphonic music.
