Chaucer's I familiari ry with the French fonna fixes lyric genre is undeniable: in the Merchant's Tale, Damian composes May a love letter "[i]n manere of a compleynt or a lay" (line 1881); the birds in the Parliament of Fowls sing a rondeau for which, Chaucer emphasizes, the music "imaked was in Fraun ce" (line 677); and Aurelius pours his love for Dorigen into "manye layes, I Songes, compleintes, roundels, virelayes" (11. 947-48).
