Book of Proceedings AIESEP 2011 International Conference 22-25 June 2011 University of Limerick, Ireland Moving People, Moving Forward 1 INTRODUCTION We are delighted to present the Book of Proceedings that is the result of an open call for submitted papers related to the work delegates presented at the AIESEP 2011 International Conference at the University of Limerick, Ireland on 22-25 June, 2011. The main theme of the conference Moving People, People Moving focused on sharing contemporary theory and discussing cutting edge research, national and international policies and best practices around motivating people to engage in school physical education and in healthy lifestyles beyond school and into adulthood and understanding how to sustain engagement over time. Five sub-themes contributed to the main theme and ran throughout the conference programme, (i) Educating Professionals who Promote Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity, (ii) Impact of Physical Education, Sport &Physical Activity on the Individual and Society, (iii) Engaging Diverse Populations in Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport, (iv) Physical Activity & Health Policies: Implementation and Implications within and beyond School and (v) Technologies in support of Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity. The papers presented in the proceedings are not grouped by themes but rather by the order they were presented in the conference programme. The number that precedes each title matches the number on the conference programme. We would like to sincerely thank all those who took the time to complie and submit a paper. Two further outlets of work related to the AIESEP 2011 International Conference are due out in 2012. -

La pugna encendida entre demócratas y nacionalistas logró influenciar las artes y la literatura de gran parte del mundo, siendo Chile un país donde el acontecimiento demarcará un nuevo porvenir en la producción literaria de la época. Este artículo aborda el auge de la poesía social de Pablo de Rokha, quien desde sus primeros trabajos se destaca como un poeta que posee un gran interés por lo social. En esta línea, el siguiente trabajo tiene como objetivo examinar el proceso que sustenta el advenimiento de la poesía comprometida en Pablo de Rokha, con la finalidad de situar y proponer “la palabra imprecadora” como el componente estético que se destaca en la publicación de Madre España (1937) y en el posterior devenir de la obra rokhiana. Chapel Hill 2015 Approved By: Carmen Hsu Frank Dominguez Rosa Perelmuter Margaret Greer Valeria Finucci © 2015 Sarah Apffel Cegelski ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Sarah Apffel Cegelski: Monstrosity and Identity in the Comedias of Lope de Vega (Under the Direction of Carmen Hsu) Monstrosity and Identity in the Comedias of Lope de Vega is concerned with the relationship between monstrosity and identity formation in early modern Spain. The monster was a popular cultural phenomenon in sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain, appearing in a variety of scientific and literary genres. The monster was not just an extraordinary and unusual creature that elicited reactions of awe, wonder, and terror; it was also considered a sign from God that required careful interpretation to comprehend its meaning. The monster also embodies those characteristics that a society deems undesirable, and so by contrast, it shows what a society accepts and desires as part of its identity. In Lope de Vega’s (1562-1635) comedias, the playwright depicts characters who challenged the social, political, and religious conventions of his time as monsters. This study of Lope’s monsters intends to understand how and why Lope depicted these characters as monsters, and what they can tell us about the behaviors, beliefs, and traditions that Lope rejected as unacceptable or undesirable parts of the Spanish collective identity. -

7 Huidobro and Parra: World-Class Antipoets Dave Oliphant With the publication in 1569–1589 of Alonso de Ercilla’s La Araucana, the poetry of Chile in Spanish originated with a major work that placed the country in the forefront of what would become an internationally acclaimed Hispanic New World literature. Thereafter, however, Chilean poetry of comparable significance would not for over three centuries emanate from the long, thin land of towering Andes mountains and soaring Pacific surf, whose native peoples Ercilla had celebrated in his epic poem, a work esteemed even by Cervantes in his Don Quijote.1 Not, in fact, until Vicente Huidobro published in 1916 his avant-garde El Espejo de agua (The Mirror of Water), and in 1931 his monumental Altazor, did Chile become, in terms of poetry, the leading post-Independence Latin American nation. As “Poeta / Anti poeta” and “antipoeta y mago” (Poet / Anti poet and antipoet and magician), Huidobro would decree in his “Manifesto Perhaps” that “THE GREAT DANGER TO THE POEM IS THE POETIC,” that to “add poetry to what has it already without you” is to pour honey on honey, “it’s sickening.”2 In his “antipoetry,” Huidobro replaces the “poetic” with a space-age “Gimnasia astral” (Astral gymnastics), and like the famous “pequeño Dios” (little God) of his “El espejo de agua,” he creates his own world and all that he says, careful as a “manicurist” not to glut his writing with descriptive words, since the adjective that does not give life, takes it away.3 With Altazor, Huidobro demonstrates in practice his theory of Creationism, a program for inverting the natural order of the universe. -

Yo no acierto a comprender, cómo es posible que, “Marginal a la Antología", corolario transitorio a esa empresa más o menos infantil, te haya obsequiado, Vicente Huidobro, “NUESTRO VIEJO AMIGO" la oportunidad de ponerte en ridículo DEFINITIVAMENTE y desenmascararte, si ello es posible, después de “Papá”, en donde te proclamas monumento y de toda tu obra. Porque, francamente, donde tú, Huidobro, bailas la danza estupenda del oso del piamonte, y pisas el palito del pelele, es en aquellas líneas siniestras, escribías con toda la torpeza de tu “¡GENIO!", que empiezan con el: "¡Mentira, mentira,:mentira!...” del ebrio a quien arrastran los carabineros, y terminan con la negra, y fea prédica grandilocuente del sacerdote; "Vas perdido en la noche de ti mismo, Pablo...”. Si el infrascrito pudiera ser un canalla, cuánto le agradecería a "LA OPINION” el haberte ofrecido un estrado para el payaso, y a mí, un modesto y discreto asiento en la galería! Insisten en declararme que no eres mi enemigo, Panit Istrati chileno, en circunstancias de que yo no he pensado jamás que tú, a quién yo estudio, accidentalmente, como caso de pequeño-gran burgués megalómano, hubieses hecho fabricar la "Antología” por enemistad para quien esto escribe, solamente, si no por oportunismo, rotunda y desenfadadamente, por oportunismo de arribista literario, que aprovecha y especula con los adolescentes, a los cuales tú declaras que acoges CON, LOS BRAZOS ABIERTOS. Y agregas por ahí, queriendo herirme, ingenuo, que un amigote ha dicho que la poesía dc Winétt de Rokha, mi mujer, es más fuerte que la mía. -

Sede Celia Sánchez Manduley Cuba [email protected] RESUMEN Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar los aportes a la diplomacia y la cultura cubana y canadiense, la labor de Mariano Brull, primer Embajador designado de Cuba en Ottawa a partir de 1945. El trabajo aborda las concepciones de Brull, como promotor de los lazos culturales y comerciales de Cuba en Canadá entre 1945 y 1950. Se valora a través del análisis del discurso cultural la apertura de sitios identitarios cubanos en Ottawa, los esfuerzos de Brull por promover el conocimiento de la literatura cubana en diversas ciudades canadienses. Los investigadores examinamos el diario cultural de Brull en ese quinquenio. Por otro lado se visualizan los esfuerzos de este diplomático por intentar abrir rutas comerciales entre Canadá y otras ciudades cubanas bajo el gobierno de Carlos Prío Socarrás. El trabajo es novedoso ya que aporta una nueva mirada a las relaciones históricas entre ambos pueblos y da a conocer los aportes de personalidades poco estudiadas en la historia y la cultura de los dos países. This dissertation looks at these specific cinematic visions of beings who survive on the edges of marginality and violence. The dissertation is articulated specifically along topics representing critical approaches to movies produced in Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Mexico. The works of a new generation of filmmakers including Alejandro González Iñárritu, Lucrecia Martel, Israel Adrián Caetano, Carlos Reygadas and Fernando Meirelles uncover a series of erosions of the social composition of the countries where these directors live. -
Huidobro and the Notion of Translatability
HUIDOBRO AND THE NOTION OF TRANSLATABILITY Daniel Balderston Tulane University In one of his manifestoes, “El creacionismo” (published in French in 1924), the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro claims that the new “creationist” poetry should be translatable and universal (1:736). A desire for universality in poetry is not unusual - poets and critics like Shakespeare, Sidney, Shelley, Hoelderlin and Rilke have spoken of the cosmic implications of the poet’s act - but the intent to write poems that will be translatable is an anomaly in the history of poetics. We need only recall Frost’s dictum that poetry is “that which gets lost from verse and prose in translation” (Burnshaw, xi), or Whitman’s lines - The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and may loitering. I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world. (89) to realize that poets have not intended to express themselves in ways that are readily translated. Even those poets who have written in more than one language have emphasized the differences between languages more than the possibility of transferring a text intact from one language to another. Thus, we find Rilke writing to Lou -- 60 -- Andreas-Salomé in the very year Huidobro published his manifestoes, “a few times I even set myself the same theme in French and in German, which then, to my surprise, developed differently from each language: which would speak very strongly against the naturalness of translation” (2:336). Furthermore, critical discussion
