Chapter 10 The ‘New’ Heidegger Babette Babich 10.1 Calculating Heidegger: From the Old to the New The ‘new’ Heidegger corresponds less to what would or could be the Heidegger of the moment on some imagined ‘cutting edge’ than it corresponds to what some wish they had in Heidegger and above all in philosophical discussions of Heidegger’s thought. We have moved, we suppose, beyond grappling with the Heidegger of Being and Time . And we also tend to suppose a fairly regular recurrence of scandal—the current instantiation infl amed by the recent publication of Heidegger’s private, philosophical, Tagebücher, invokes what the editor of these recently published ‘black notebooks’ attempts to distinguish as Heidegger’s ‘historial antisemitism’ — ‘historial’ here serving to identify Heidegger’s references to World Jewry in one of the volumes. -

Purlieu | Special Edition | Fall 2011 Dr. Babette Babich is a Professor in the Philosophy Department at Fordham University where she has taught since 1989. Her work focuses on Continental philosophy, especially Nietzsche and Heidegger, philosophy of science, as well as politics and aesthetics. Her books include Nietzsche‘s Philosophy of Science: Reflecting Science on the Ground of Art and Life; Words in Blood, Like Flowers: Philosophy and Poetry, Music and Eros in Hölderlin, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, and her most recent, Nietzsches Wissenshaftsphilosophie. She is the Executive Editor of New Nietzsche Studies, a journal she founded in 1994. PURLIEU: As the editors of Purlieu we have been accused of attempting something superfluous — or even detrimental — to the field of philosophy. Among the charges leveled against us, some critics have claimed that we risk diluting the rigor demanded of our discipline and that we thus compromise its integrity. -

Volume 4, No 1, Spring 2009 ISSN 1932-1066 Jaspers, Heidegger, and Arendt On Politics, Science, and Communication Babette Babich Fordham University [email protected] Abstract: Heidegger's 1950 claim to Jaspers (later repeated in his Spiegel interview), that his Nietzsche lectures represented a "resistance" to Nazism is premised on the understanding that he and Jaspers have of the place of science in the Western world. Thus Heidegger can emphasize Nietzsche's epistemology, parsing Nietzsche's will to power, contra Nazi readings, as the metaphysical culmination of the domination of the West by scientism and technologism. It is in this sense that Heidegger argues that German Nazism is "in essence" the same as Soviet Bolshevism and American capitalism. Jaspers himself had likewise emphasized the Will to Power by contrast with the doctrine of eternal recurrence. Heidegger differs from Jaspers (as from their mutual student Hannah Arendt) inasmuch as Jaspers preserves an enthusiasm for the possibility of scientific certainty while yet recognizing (as Heidegger does) a strong sense of the limits of science. None of the three can correctly be labeled anti-scientific. The essay closes by recalling Arendt's reflections on the very possibility of resistance using the example of Jaspers' own resistance to contemporary political events. A survey of continental philosophy I wrote for reception of the language of limit-situations, or indeed translation into Chinese included an entry on Jaspers' life-situations in general. Jaspers who followed a more Existenz-Philosophie, focusing, in part, on Jaspers' "world Kantian conventionality than did Heidegger but, and as philosophy": illuminated by Nietzsche's thought, conceived such limit situations in term of the individual shattering Especially toward the end of his career and in the wake against life and so foundering. -

5 Heidegger’s Black Night Heidegger’s Black Night: The Nachlass and Its Wirkungsgeschichte Babette Babich Babette Babich Digital Philosophy and the “New” “Heidegger Scandal” In a world of Heidegger studies so becalmed that the Heidegger Circle in the United States, the same Circle to which Heidegger addressed one of his last letters on science and tech- nology,1 spends its time on the Internet debating Tom Sheehan’s claim to reduce Being (Sein and Seyn) to “meaning” along with more recondite worries, grieved as it were to the smallest nib, the tiniest point, and thus into that inaudibly humming world of occasional e-missives posted with either no response or only to small circles of back-and-forthings that flare and die, into all of this that is the life of digital or online philosophy burst the so- called Schwarze Hefte, the so-called Black Notebooks. This “Ereignis” quickly became Heidegger’s own “black night” where former distinc- tions could no longer be made and where everything to be addressed turned on a single theme. What is of central importance is that this event did not transpire in the usual way of the academic bombshell—that is, by way of a journal article (from one perspective, the original form of publication of Heidegger’s Being and Time),2 nor did it hit the book- stores like Richard Rorty’s Mirror of Nature or Alasdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue or Alex- ander Nehamas’s Life as Literature or indeed, for a clearly continental contender, Gilles Deleuze’s Nietzsche and Philosophy.3 Neither was this a ‘performance event’ like one of Jacques Derrida’s famously long lectures before an audience of hundreds of eager com- parative literature and language students (rather than philosophy-minded listeners). -

Certainly, in this post-war era (where Sartre’s 1945 Paris lecture ‘Existentialism Is a Humanism’ sought to defend the ethical credentials of existentialism in the face of the charge of nihihsm) and more so today in the wake of the Black Notebooks scandal, Heidegger’s philosophy falters on ethical grounds as on political complications. -

B abette B abich: Requiem Page | 1 Requiem Reflections on the Analytic-Continental Divide Babette Babich I’d like to begin by thanking Shane Ewegen for this invitation — it is grand to be back, of course, it always is (although without Shane I cannot imagine having been invited back otherwise). Although I haven’t lost my admiration for the department at Boston College, it is manifestly very different from what it was when I was studying here. I say this because it is obvious and because it is a point to which I will return in my conclusion. I am also grateful to Shane, because it also does not go without saying that I’d be invited to a discussion on the distinction between continental and analytic philosophy and this is true although I have been writing quite vociferously about this topic for more than twenty years.1 That’s 2 long and lonely decades in print. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 10 EARLY CONTINENTAL PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE Babette Babich During the years leading up to and after 1890-1930, the continental concep tion of science had a far broader scope than the anglophone notion of science today. Even today, the German term Wissenschaft embraces not only the natural and the social sciences, including economics, l but also the full panoply of the so-called humanities, including the theoretical study of art and theology, both important in the nineteenth century for, among other things, the formation of the life sciences.2 Philosophy itself was also counted as a science and was, in its phenomenological articulation, nothing less than the science ofscientific origins or "original science" the «Urwissenschaft" - as Martin Heidegger defined it in 1919,3 following his own intensive engagement with Edmund Hussed's Logical Investigations. -
