Hermeneutics, Exteriority, and Transmittability Theodore George Texas A&M University [email protected] Abstract Hermeneutics is widely celebrated as a call for “conversation”—that is, a manner of in- quiry characterized by humility and openness to the other that eschews the pretenses of calculative rationality and resists all finality of conclusions. In this, conversation takes shape in efforts to understand and interpret that always unfold in the transmis- sion of meaning historically in language. Yet, the celebration of hermeneutics for hu- mility and openness appears, at least, to risk embarrassment in light of claims found in Heidegger and Gadamer that conversation is always contingent on “prior accord.” Critics of hermeneutics have, for some decades, interpreted this claim of prior accord to refer to a common tradition, so that the understanding achieved in conversation is restricted to those who belong to the same heritage. In this essay, the author argues that although Heidegger and Gadamer often suggest this prior accord is a matter of common tradition, crucial threads of Gadamer’s thought, in particular, recommend a different view. Gadamer, in these threads, offers that “prior accord” concerns not a common tradition, but, on the contrary, the call to participate in hermeneutic trans- mission as such, even—and no doubt especially—when those in conversation are not familiar with the tradition or language of the other. With this, we are called to converse not first by what the other says, but by the fact that we do not yet understand, that we have already misunderstood, and that we perhaps cannot understand. -

PHILOSOPHY & HUMAN SCIENCE Plato’s Paideia: A Model of Formative Education Thomas Marwa Monchena, ALCP/OSS Department of Philosophy Jordan University College Introduction This essay is a follow-up to a 2015 philosophy conference constituted largely by lecturers and doctoral students of philosophy from various universities in Rome. The faculty of philosophy of the Lateran Pontifical University organized the conference and entitled it, La filosofia come formazione dell’uomo (lit., Philosophy as a Formation of the Man ). I myself was present as a participant. In the course of this essay, I intend to offer a brief elaboration of some important elements of Plato’s theory of education which came up during the conference. Plato’s views on education appear in many of his dialogues; but in this paper, I limit myself to the educational system which Plato designed for the city as discussed in the Republic , with an emphasis on the formative and integral nature of the educational system found there. It is to be kept in mind that Plato’s system of education makes a commitment to the formation of the whole human being, in all aspects: intellectual, spiritual, social and physical. In the Republic , Plato illustrates his conviction that the nature of the good human life, i.e., true happiness, cannot be determined independently of the place that human beings occupy within society, and that the nature of a just society depends on the education of its citizens. Therefore, he sets forth paideia as an educational system that will educate, form, and train individuals 12 Africa Tomorrow 20/1-2 (June/December 2018) who can serve as a virtuous ruling class. -

A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 2011 ABSTRACT KNOWLEDGE AND THOUGHT IN HEIDEGGER AND FOUCAULT: TOWARDS AN EPISTEMOLOGY OF RUPTURES Arun Iyer, B.E., M.A. Marquette University, 2011 This dissertation shows how Martin Heidegger and Michel Foucault, by questioning the very understanding of the subject-object relationship on which all epistemology is grounded, challenge two of its most cherished beliefs: 1. Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. They also show us how the history of knowledge exhibits ruptures when the very character of knowledge undergoes drastic transformation in the course of history. The dissertation concludes by hinting at how these new accounts of thought and knowledge have the potential to shake the very foundations of epistemology and lead us to a new framework for discussing the most basic questions of epistemology, towards an epistemology of ruptures. -

Folia Philosophica 34 ISSN 2353-9445 (online) ISSN 1231-0913 (print) Dariusz Kubok Comments on the Sources of Greek Philosophical Criticism Abstract: The present article attempts to shed light on the sources of philosophi- cal criticism of early Greece and on the origins of the critical attitude adopted by the thinkers of the period. Above all, however, reflections presented hereby are meant to serve as a backdrop for analyses of a much broader scope. The study seeks to identify the defining characteristics of early Greek criticism, upon which basis the author puts forth a proposition for a general typology of its forms. Complement- ing the present comments is a brief discussion of the suggested types of philosophical criticism in light of the views of some of the leading philosophers of the time. Keywords: early Greek philosophy, critical thinking, criticism, skepticism, typology There is universal agreement that a critical approach is the main force pushing human thought forward, and that criticism, as an attribute of thought, must be an essential element of rational reflection on real- ity. A deficit of criticism leads not only to stagnation in scholarship and science, but also to the appearance of various forms of dogmatism, which do not permit the emergence of alternative views, nor the revi- sion of positions acknowledged as final. -

If centrist visions likewise exist, many, for want of likely suspects, relegate these to the left. Indeed, in their lead contribution to their collection on The Far Right, Education, and Violence, Michael Peters and Tina Besley point out that the cottage industry of Nietzsche mis- appropriations, especially those kipped to the right, has been booming for more than a cen- tury (Peters & Besley, 2020, p. 5; cf. Alloa, 2017; Illing, 2018; Kellner, 2019). Beyond the pell-mell of misreadings and prototypically ‘Nazi’ bowdlerization under Hitler, Peters and Besley rightly point out that what they name the “‘pedagogical problem’” (Peters & Besley, 2020, p. 10) can be located at the heart of such a political free for all, on the right as on the left. -

Chapter 10 The ‘New’ Heidegger Babette Babich 10.1 Calculating Heidegger: From the Old to the New The ‘new’ Heidegger corresponds less to what would or could be the Heidegger of the moment on some imagined ‘cutting edge’ than it corresponds to what some wish they had in Heidegger and above all in philosophical discussions of Heidegger’s thought. We have moved, we suppose, beyond grappling with the Heidegger of Being and Time . And we also tend to suppose a fairly regular recurrence of scandal—the current instantiation infl amed by the recent publication of Heidegger’s private, philosophical, Tagebücher, invokes what the editor of these recently published ‘black notebooks’ attempts to distinguish as Heidegger’s ‘historial antisemitism’ — ‘historial’ here serving to identify Heidegger’s references to World Jewry in one of the volumes. -

Since then, a flood of books, newspaper articles, academic papers and political speeches have been published on the phenomenon of post-truth, alternative facts and post-fact politics. In the debate about post-truth it is generally assumed that facts, truth and truthfulness have ceased to be relevant to politics. -
