Introduction The paper discusses two seemingly separated topics: the origin and function of the Liar Paradox in ancient Greek philosophy and the Reduction ad absurdum mode of argumentation. Its goal is to show how the two topics fit together and why they are closely connected. The accepted tradition is that Eubulides of Miletos was the first to formulate the Liar Paradox correctly and that the paradox was part of the philosophical discussion of the Megarian School. Which version of the paradox was formulated by Eubulides is unknown, but according to some hints given by Aristotle and an incorrect version given by Cicero1, the version was probably as follows: The paradox is created from the Liar sentence ‘I am lying’. -

PHILOSOPHY & HUMAN SCIENCE Plato’s Paideia: A Model of Formative Education Thomas Marwa Monchena, ALCP/OSS Department of Philosophy Jordan University College Introduction This essay is a follow-up to a 2015 philosophy conference constituted largely by lecturers and doctoral students of philosophy from various universities in Rome. The faculty of philosophy of the Lateran Pontifical University organized the conference and entitled it, La filosofia come formazione dell’uomo (lit., Philosophy as a Formation of the Man ). I myself was present as a participant. In the course of this essay, I intend to offer a brief elaboration of some important elements of Plato’s theory of education which came up during the conference. Plato’s views on education appear in many of his dialogues; but in this paper, I limit myself to the educational system which Plato designed for the city as discussed in the Republic , with an emphasis on the formative and integral nature of the educational system found there. It is to be kept in mind that Plato’s system of education makes a commitment to the formation of the whole human being, in all aspects: intellectual, spiritual, social and physical. In the Republic , Plato illustrates his conviction that the nature of the good human life, i.e., true happiness, cannot be determined independently of the place that human beings occupy within society, and that the nature of a just society depends on the education of its citizens. Therefore, he sets forth paideia as an educational system that will educate, form, and train individuals 12 Africa Tomorrow 20/1-2 (June/December 2018) who can serve as a virtuous ruling class. -

Humor as Philosophical Subversion, Especially in the Skeptics Richard Bett 1. Introduction Aristotle is not exactly a comedian. He wrote about comedy in the lost second book of the Poetics, and, as discussed in another paper in this volume, he wrote about wittiness (εὐτραπελία) in his ethical works. But he does not exhibit much of either. What humor there is in Aristotle seems to fall into two main varieties. First, there is word-play that engages the reader’s attention, which can perhaps be seen as an instance of a technique he describes in Rhetoric 3.10, that of saying “smart things and things that create a good impression” (τὰ ἀστεῖα καὶ τὰ εὐδοκιµοῦντα, 1410b6).1 Early in the Nicomachean Ethics, he says that in endeavoring to determine the principles (ἀρχαί) of ethics, we should begin (ἀρκτέον) with things known to us (1095b2-4). A little later, introducing the idea of the function (ἔργον) of a human being, he asks whether we can seriously consider that a human being as such (as opposed to people in various occupations) is ἀργόν (1097b28- 30) – which is intentionally ambiguous between “without function” and “lazy.” In De Caelo, introducing the topic of minimal magnitudes, he says that positing such a minimal magnitude (τοὐλάχιστον) will make the biggest difference (τὰ µέγιστα) in mathematics (271b10-11). Early Pyrrhonism As a Sect of Buddhism? a Case Study in the Methodology of Comparative Philosophy

A CASE STUDY IN THE METHODOLOGY OF COMPARATIVE PHILOSOPHY MONTE RANSOME JOHNSON & BRETT SHULTS ABSTRACT: We offer a sceptical examination of a thesis recently advanced in a monograph published by Princeton University Press entitled Greek Buddha: Pyrrho’s Encounter with Early Buddhism in Central Asia. In this dense and probing work, Christopher I. Beckwith, a professor of Central Eurasian studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, argues that Pyrrho of Elis adopted a form of early Buddhism during his years in Bactria and Gandhāra, and that early Pyrrhonism must be understood as a sect of early Buddhism. In making his case Beckwith claims that virtually all scholars of Greek, Indian, and Chinese philosophy have been operating under flawed assumptions and with flawed methodologies, and so have failed to notice obvious and undeniable correspondences between the philosophical views of the Buddha and of Pyrrho. In this study we take Beckwith’s proposal and challenge seriously, and we examine his textual basis and techniques of translation, his methods of examining passages, his construal of problems and his reconstruction of arguments. We find that his presuppositions are contentious and doubtful, his own methods are extremely flawed, and that he draws unreasonable conclusions. Although the result of our study is almost entirely negative, we think it illustrates some important general points about the methodology of comparative philosophy. Following up on their work, Benjamin Acosta-Hughes and Susan Stephens, in a recent panel at the APA, and in papers that are about to appear in Callimachea II. Atti della seconda giornata di studi su Callimaco (Rome: Herder), have argued not for occasional allusions, but for a much more extensive influence from the Phaedo and Phaedrus in the Aetia prologue (Acosta-Hughes) and the Protagoras, Ion, and Phaedrus in the Iambi (Stephens). These papers are part of a preliminary study to reformulate Callimachus' aesthetic theory. 1 The Cicala's Song: Plato in the Aetia* This paper prefigures a larger study of Callimachus and Plato, a study on which my Stanford colleague Susan Stephens and I have now embarked in our co-authored volume on Callimachus.1 Awareness of Platonic allusion in Callimachus is not new, although its significance has not really been appreciateda close reading of the two authors remains a real desideratum, and it is indeed this need that we hope our work will one day fulfill. The main focal points of the present paper are two passages of Callimachus, and two passages of Plato, that, read together, configure a remarkable intertextual dialogue on poetry, reading, and the inspired voice. -

To Be(lieve) or Not to Be(lieve)? (skepticism & inner peace) 1. Ataraxia: Happiness in Skepticism: The ancient philosophers believed that there was happiness in wisdom. If we pursued truth, we would be happy. In their pursuit of Truth and Happiness, the ancient skeptics (e.g., Pyrrho of Elis, ~300 BC ; Sextus Empiricus, ~200 AD) noticed that, for pretty much any issue, a good argument could be presented for BOTH sides. Famously, the skeptic Carneades gave a public speech commending justice and our understanding of it, only to give, the very next day, a speech refuting everything he’d said the day before! (Antithesis) The result is that we have no rational basis for believing one side rather than the other, since both are equally well-supported. (Equipollence) Therefore, we must remain agnostic, suspending belief. (Epoché) The result was interesting: By suspending belief, they achieved a state of inner peace and tranquility! (Ataraxia) It was their very dissatisfaction during their quest for happiness and truth which led the first skeptics to discover the true way to happiness. Sextus Empiricus tells a story: Indeed, what happened to the Skeptic is just like what is told of Apelles the painter. For it is said that once upon a time, when he was painting a horse and wished to depict the horse’s froth, he failed so completely that he gave up and threw his sponge at the picture – the sponge on which he used to wipe the paints from his brush – and that in striking the picture the sponge produced the desired effect. -

Can an Ancient Greek Sceptic Be Eudaimôn (Or Happy)? and What Difference Does the Answer Make to Us?
Journal of Ancient Philosophy Vol. VI 2012 Issue 1 Can an ancient Greek sceptic be eudaimôn (or happy)? And what difference does the answer make to us? Richard Bett (Johns Hopkins University) The paper explores how far the ancient Greek sceptics in fact accept, and how far they should accept, the central Greek ethical notion of eudaimonia , usually translated "happiness" - and what, if anything, the answers may tell us today. The first section shows that sceptics of both the Academic and Pyrrhonist traditions frequently employ the notion of eudaimonia , apparently without discomfort. The second section draws attention to a contrast within the relevant works of Sextus Empiricus - one of them being willing to speak of the sceptic's eudaimonia and the other entirely avoiding this - and considers some possible reasons why, at some point in his life, Sextus might have found the notion problematic. The answers suggested are, first, that the term eudaimonia , at least as normally used by non-sceptical philosophers, presupposes that it is possible to rank human lives objectively in terms of their levels of well-being, and second, that the term standardly carries with it a commitment to a certain kind of long-term structure in one's life; there is at least a serious question whether either of these is consistent with sceptical suspension of judgement. The third section examines how far a sceptic could aspire to happiness , where this is not assumed to be equivalent to eudaimonia , and touches on several modern philosophers who have focused on happiness or, more generally, on well- being. -

SEXTUS WAS NO EUDAIMONIST by JOSEPH B. BULLOCK Under the Direction of Dr. Tim O’Keefe ABSTRACT Ancient Greek philosophical schools are said to share a common structure in their ethical theories which is characterized by a eudaimonistic teleology based in an understanding of human nature. At first glance, the skepticism of Sextus Empiricus as described in the Outlines of Pyrrhonism seems to fit into this model insofar as he describes the end of the skeptic as ataraxia, a common account of the expression of human happiness. I argue that this is a misunderstanding of Sextus’s philosophy for several reasons. “The end of skepticism” cannot be eudaimonistic or teleological in the way that other ancient ethical theories are typically understood; moreover, ataraxia is not an end derived from a theory about human nature. For these reasons, the skeptical way of life is radically different than the ethical theories proposed by other schools. I argue that this difference is a result of the character of the skeptical enterprise which involves the implicit rejection of norms in both the epistemological and the ethical spheres. -

PHI515: Special Topics in the History of Philosophy Fall 2020 Benjamin Morison The scepticism of Sextus Empiricus, and Against the Ethicists This course aims to give students an overview of the scepticism of the 2nd Century AD Pyrrhonist philosopher, Sextus Empiricus, after which we will read in detail parts of his treatise Against the Ethicists (also known as Adversus Mathematicos (M) XI). In the first half of semester, we will be looking at extracts from Sextus’ ‘manifesto’ of Pyrrhonism, Outlines of Pyrrhonism (PH) book I, in order to get a good idea of the basics of his distinctive brand of scepticism. We will be reading Against the Ethicists in the light of that manifesto; recent scholars have argued that the scepticism at work in Against the Ethicists is different from the ‘official’ scepticism of PH I.
