ITS America The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) Connected Vehicle Insights Fourth Generation Wireless Vehicle and Highway Gateways to the Cloud An evaluation of Long Term Evolution (LTE) and other wireless technologies’ impact to the transportation sector Steven H. Bayless Technology Scan Series 2011-2012 0 Connected Vehicle Insights: 4G Wireless: Vehicle and Highway Gateways to the Cloud ITS America INTRODUCTION With Fourth Generation cellular (4G), we will see the complete extension of the internet suite of protocols to the wireless environment. 4G likely represents the end of the traditional siloed telecommunications approach that has been the result of decades of investment in single-application “purpose built” wireless technologies (e.g. radio, TV, land mobile, and cellular) and regulatory practice. Current investment patterns in infrastructure provide a strong indication of what will be available and provided in what quantities, quality, and cost beyond 2015 for both terminal devices and network infrastructure. This paper examines how next generation wide-area cellular such as 4G will be able to support vehicular applications, and how transportation infrastructure may mesh with wireless networks. Specifically, it suggests that automotive electronics engineers will need to be cognizant of how application data is treated by 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, and how innovations such as self-organizing femto-cells, “traffic shaping” and heterogeneous or “vertical roaming” across different radio access technologies may improve the performance of off-board or “cloud” -based vehicular applications Furthermore, the paper suggests that over the long term, vehicles will serve as wireless gateways that manage and collect data a number of devices or sensors deployed in vehicles and highway infrastructure, utilizing 4G cellular as the last-mile wide-area connection to the cloud.

BECOMING SIKH: SIKH YOUTH IDENTITIES AND THE MULTICULTURAL IMAGINARY by KALBIR HEER B.A., University College of the Cariboo, 1998 B.Ed., The University of British Columbia, 1999 M.A., Gonzaga University, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Educational Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) March 2018 ©Kalbir Heer, 2018 Abstract This dissertation explores the lives of second and third generation Sikh youth in the Greater Vancouver area in relation to the ways they think about their identities. As racialized youth growing up in a major Canadian urban center, being situated within an array of various ethnic, racial, religious, and gender differences plays an important role in how participants recognize what it means to be Sikh, and the potential to become differently. Particularly relevant in this study is an investigation into the ways competing discourses of multiculturalism both facilitates the way participants “do” their identities, and also shapes the ways Sikh youth come to (mis)recognize the multicultural “others”. Through small group and individual interviews, youth theorizing on the repetition, regulation and re-signification of identity categories is explored. Relying significantly on Judith Butler's theory of performativity, and Michel Foucault’s discussions of discourse, knowledge, and power, multiculturalism is taken up as an important societal discourse which requires racialized youth to perform their identities in everyday multicultural context such as schools. In other words, multiculturalism is theorized beyond policy and curriculum debates to investigate how youth “do multiculturalism” in different contexts through various embodied practices which constitute and regulate claims to a Sikh identity.

Before the Federal Communications Commission Washington, D.C. 20554 ) In the Matter of ) ) Digital Audio Broadcasting Systems ) MM Docket No. 99-325 And Their Impact on the Terrestrial ) Radio Broadcast Service. ) ) ) REPLY STATEMENT As an experienced broadcast radio enthusiast, I, Kevin M. Tekel, hereby submit my support for Mr. John Pavlica, Jr.'s Motion to Dismiss the Commission's Report and Order, as adopted October 10, 2002, which currently allows the preliminary use of In-Band, On-Channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (also known by the marketing name "HD Radio") on the AM and FM radio bands. For over a decade, various attempts have been made at designing and implementing an IBOC system for the U.S. radio airwaves, but these attempts have been unsuccessful due to numerous flaws, and iBiquity's current IBOC system is no different. As currently designed and authorized, IBOC is an inherently flawed system that has the potential to cause great harm to the viability, effectiveness, and long-term success of existing analog AM and FM radio broadcasting services. IBOC is a proprietary system Currently, there is only one proponent of an IBOC system whose design has been submitted, studied, and approved -- that of iBiquity Digital Corporation (iBiquity). This is an unprecedented case of the use of a proprietary broadcasting system. Virtually all other enhancements to broadcasting services that have been introduced over the years have been borne out of competition between the designs of various proponents: AM Stereo, FM Stereo, color television, multi-channel television sound, and most recently, High Definition television (HDTV). Since the merger of USA Digital Radio, Inc.
