2 Lowflying July 2005 Lowflying July 2005 3 The basics

As WE DISCUSSED last month, less mechanically-experienced members have said they would like some information on basic maintenance for the Seven. So we'll kick off at the very beginning with getting the car off the ground. Even if you don't feel ready, or simply don't wish, to carry out any specific tasks, it may encourage to take a look at your car from underneath and start to get a feel for where things are, how they are put together - and to begin a fuller understanding of your Seven. Compiled by Andy Belcher and Adrian Elkin. Getting to know your Seven

This can be overcome by rolling a corner of the car onto a plank of wood initially to give clearance to allow the trolley jack under the chassis. Again a piece of carpet or small block of wood between the jack face and chassis should be used. The jacking points are the same for the Quick-lift as illustrated. Before jacking, ensure the surface is smooth and flat and again ensure that the hand brake is released and neutral is selected - as the car and jack will roll slightly during operation - to minimise the risk of the car jumping off the jack face. below:

/Indulgence Ltd. Unit 7 Frieslawn Centre, Hodsoll St. Fairseat, (Nr. Brands Hatch), Kent TN15 7LH Workshop: 01732 823 096 E-mail: [email protected] When Caterham started development of the Superlight R500, we needed a tyre that could match the handling characteristics of the car, be exceptionally light in weight, yet be compliant on the road and have improved wet weather performance compared to the Avon ACB10.

Working in conjunction with Avon, the result was the original CR500.

Now in its fifth year, we have used the experience of the tyre gained on the road, track and in race conditions, to develop a third evolution of the product. The new specification 13" CR500 retains its Kevlar reinforced light weight of the original and continues to be hand-built on the race line, along with racing tyres such as the Formula 3 slicks.

Developed extensively on track, the result is an all-new construction utilising recently developed materials, whilst externally retaining the same proven compound and tread pattern of the standard CR500.

The new tyre has extended its on-track performance and durability. We believe that it is possibly the most capable and progressive tyre you can use on a Caterham, allowing you to explore the limits of the car with ultimate confidence.

It is the race tyre (dry and wet) for R400 and all Roadsport race series. It is also an MSA List 1 b tyre.

The Caterham Avon CR500 remains the only tyre designed specifically for the Caterham Seven.

After a couple of seasons racing R400, SV-R500 and SV-R500 Evo Sevens Nigel Bent has succumbed to the lure of the 'Masters' series. Those who use BlatChat may have read some of Nigel's account - for others he shares here his initial impressions of his new race machine...

12 Lowflying July 2005 which are far more frenetic. The other thing that immedi• ately struck me was how smooth and 'planted' the car felt despite my hamfisted attempts to find the lines and braking points. Most race Caterhams have a fairly hard set-up but the CSR positively flowed round the track, yet it wasn't soft and certainly didn't roll at all. I'm no engineer, but some• thing pretty good has been done here. I don't know if it's the springs, the dampers, the geometry, the new inboard and IRS set-up, the chassis or what - but it works. After a brief pitstop for a spanner- and vital fluids-check I rejoined the track to drive a little more purposefully. Time to give the engine a bit more of a work-out. I went deliberately slowly round Coppice and dropped to second at the start of Starkey's Straight. Pause for a moment, deep breath, foot down. Helmet slammed back against the headrest as the Avons bit and the car just rock• eted away, into third, fourth, then fifth, the silencer letting out a muffled but meaty bellow like a bull with a hornet up its bum. The esses were a bit too close by then, and I men• tally prepared to run straight on down the Grand Prix cir• cuit loop instead. Hard on the brakes and down through the 'box: blimey, that stopped quickly! Through the esses, back off a bit and take stock... Firstly, that engine kicks out a lot of power and torque, much more than an R400 or an R500. The R500 EVO engine is similar but delivers in a slightly different way as it revs to 8500 rather than 7500 where we'd set the change lights on the CSR. No shortage of go then. Secondly, the rear tyres really work. If I'd done the same trick in the SV-R500 EVO, I'd have spun the rears with the old 8" crossply slicks. These new 10" radials just dug in and worked beautifully. Finally the brakes: nice and firm, not too much travel and bags of feel; subsequent tests showed no sign of fade either. Combined with the new Avons, they really do the business. The unexpected bit was how stable the car felt under heavy braking - my previous cars have all tended to squirm around under hard braking from high speed and have been easy to lock up; the CSR just felt nailed to the ground and really inspired confidence. >

This new formula was intended as an entry into circuit racing. Other cars competing included the Terrier and Arthur Mallock's U2. Lotus's 'Three-7' designation was coincidental to it being the next in their type number order.
