The cars became increasingly 'perfect' over the last thirty years and instead of getting more excitement these cars started to bore me more and more. l always liked the Volkswagen Beetle (no wonder for a German, I think!), so I bought a vw APAL Buggy: a nice car to drive around the countryside, but a little bit slow after a while ... So I started to look to Britain , where dozens of different kit-ca rs where driv ing around-an absolute paradise! To get started I bought a simple, and old, Dutton B+. The condition was not too good, but it had a German registration which was a very big adva ntage. I ended up working much more in the garage or looking fo r spare parts on the internet than I did enjoying the narrow and winding roads of Hohenlohe, where l live. The Credit Suisse International Festival of Motoring took place in Jersey, on 4th-6th June. Crescent Motorcyles brought their Rizla race bikes and my husband, Steve, brought our 'matching' Seven, R500TOP along too. It was a great weekend and the action was 'non-competitive' so everyone was able to have a good time without any of the usual pressures.

Here in Jersey there we have a group of three R500s quite a gathering in such a small island, so we have formed an informal 'R500 Club' for doing island blats. So, a good range of the R500 variants: they certainly raise a few eyebrows, together! As we are all friends, we dedded to form the 'Jersey R500 Club' - there is also a fourth car which is sometimes on the island. Right: drivers and cars re·group at St. Catherine's.

- -·----·- ·------1 -26 Lowflying August 2010 A Seven's tale

The 1932 Sandford, which Renaud and his father restored, prepared and took to victory in the inaugural Coupes de l'Age d'Or at Montlhery in 1969- a three-wheeling interlude between bikes and karts and the inevitable Seven ...

I contacted John Watson-with the Arch Motors frame number and the two chassis plate numbers-and he confirmed that SB2489 should indeed have the Arch frame I had. Ouf!, as we say in French (roughly 'phew' I suppose), she was the real thing! The change was most probably set up when a twin-cam from an Elan replaced the Crossflow for a time, as we'll see later; at the time owner could not remember when the change happened.

582489, as bought by its 1995-98, with Bernard Mary present owner- as a car largely disassembled with Nicolas bought the car from Bernard Mary a view to restoration. in April 1998. As I had a copy of Bernard's carte grise (the ownership document), and his hometown of La Rochelle is not so large, it was not too difficult to track him down and I had the pleasure of making contact with him in the spring of 2004. The curious chassis plate Bernard is a very nice guy who, when I with the original '58' stated the purpose of my call replied: "Oh, so number (correct for the Arch frame number, and you bought my Seven! I should never have originally supplied as sold that wonderful car!" a single-carb crossflow We got on well and during our conversation car) and an 'SC' number I suggested he might buy another Seven, if {normally indicative he'd been so fond of it. of a twin-cam machine) marked over the top; I told him about the relatively inexpensive (see text). Caterhams in in the uk and the one I had so nearly bought in Oxford. And guess what? He called me a couple of weeks later to tell me had bought it- without even seeing it- and how nice it was to be Sevening again! I really enjoy that anecdote! The Seven virus had been alive in his blood all these years, just waiting to be rejuvenated!

When Bernard bought SB 2489, in July 1995, he registered it in the UK under a friend's name, a prete-nom (frontman), which can, for a time, circumvent some of the French tracasseries administratives. So, the car kept its UK plate e n 22H until the end of the year

when it was registered in France as 846 VQ 17. The car remained pretty much as it was bought and was used mainly on the road but also for some hillclimb events. >
