He is perhaps the foremost authority on Nauru philately in the world. He also formed an interesting collection/exhibit of Australian aerogrammes that resulted in his book "The Aerogrammes of Australia & its Dependencies 1944-1980", published in 1984 by the American Philatelic Society. The King George VI issues from Dr Stein's collection are offered here. Catalogue numbers are from the "Australasian Stamp Catalogue" with Dr Stein's numbers following in brackets] 305 PS Balance of the collection including 7d 'AIR LETTER' on yellow unused & commercially used, 7d 'AIRLETTER' commercially used in TP&NG & another uprated to 10d, 'TEN PENCE' on 7d to Germany, 10d Constellation with Void Background to China, 10d Constellation & Globe from 'MAWSON' (AAT) and two examples from the 1954 "Belfast" crash at Singapore (to GB or Denmark), Forces type improperly used to a civilian & proper usages with the admonition crossed-through (2), formular "Territories" issues philatelically used from New Hebrides & Norfolk Island, and a few TP&NG issues including 10d 'AEROGRAMME' commercially used to Singapore etc, generally very fine. (50) 500T 306 PS A 1944 'AIR LETTER' (Two Words) 7d on pale yellow stock A1 (A1B), unused, Cat $200. 125T Lot 307 307 PS A 1944 'AIR LETTER' (Two Words) 7d on pale yellow stock as A1 (A1B) but with No Gum on the Top Flap, unused. Rare. [Previously listed in ASC as #A1A, "for use in Papua New Guinea"; the current edition states "The existence & status of the previously listed #A1A are both in doubt"] 400T Lot 308 308 PS A 1944 'AIR LETTER' (Two Words) 7d on pale yellow stock with Qantas Christmas greetings & kangaroo "postman" printed within A1C-A (A-1Bv), to Wales with Sydney cds of 13DE44. Only 100 were printed: see AAMC #992a, Cat $800 (2002). [Eustis states only 100 were carried] 300T Lot 316 316 PS B 1944 'AIRLETTER' (One Word) a standard 7d Airletter commercially used to Canada with the flight cachet in violet at lower-left, Vancouver & Toronto b/s, re-directed on arrival, opened a little roughly. Very scarce item. 100T Lot 317 317 PS A 1944 'AIRLETTER' (One Word) a standard 7d Airletter to New York with typed endorsement "FIRST DAY AUSTRALIAN-/ AMERICAN AIRLETTER COVER/...", the letter within describing the sender's efforts to have the airmail rate to America reduced from 8/- per ounce to 7d for an aerogramme, Sydney cds of 11FE47. (3) 150T Lot 322 322 PS A 1952 Provisional 'TEN PENCE' on 7d A4 (A-4) to England with Melbourne cds of 29AU52 being the First Day of Issue, letter within from the Australian Stamp Monthly confirms release that day. [The ASC gives 12.9.1952, two full weeks later, as the issue date] 150T Lot 323 323 PS A 1952 Provisional 'TEN PENCE' on 7d A4 (A-4) with large 'SPECIMEN' Overprint in red across the face. 75T 324 PS A 1952 Constellation (Void Background) 10d A5 (A-5) with large 'SPECIMEN' Overprint in red across two panels. 75T 325 PS A 1953 'AEROGRAMME' Constellation (over Globe) 10d A6 (A-6) with Melbourne cds of 29JY53 being the First Day of Issue. 75T 326 PS A 1953 'AEROGRAMME' Constellation (over Globe) 10d A6 (A-6) with large 'SPECIMEN' Overprint in red across the face. 75T 327 PS A- ARMED FORCES: 1944 (Sep) 7d 'AIR LETTER/(For letters to members of Forces Overseas' AM1 (AM-1) properly used to an Australian serving with the RAF at "Ein Shemer/MEF" (Palestine, now Israel), small central stain. Overprint in red AM1-C (AM-1v), light diagonal bend, unused & rare thus: see AAMC #978c, Cat $220 used (2002); unpriced unused. [Illustrated by Stein at page 131. This item supports a statement by Clayton (1968) that the admonition was crossed through in red pencil before they were sold] 400T 330 PS A- ARMED FORCES: another example, to England with Sydney cds of 11SE44 being the First Day of Issue also of the unoverprinted form, minor crease across the back panel. 175T 331 PS B ARMED FORCES: another example, signed by the pilot "LRAmbrose" and within by "HudsonFysh" (non-contemporary; in ballpoint ink), minor faults. 175T 332 PS A/A- OFFICIAL ISSUES: 1952 'ON HIS MAJESTY'S SERVICE' with 'Postage/Paid' at upper-right used examples with & without Accent over 'A' of 'MAIL', and another pair each with 'SPECIMEN' h/s in violet. (4) 150T 333 PS A OFFICIAL ISSUES: two further examples on different shades of stock, each with 'HIS' Barred-Out & Typed 'HER' Added, one with advice about the usage of Olympic slogan cancels at the various GPOs. (2) 200T 334 PS A "TERRITORIES" (UNSTAMPED) ISSUES: 1947 'AIRLETTER' on grey stock AP1 (AS-1) 1948 philatelic usages from Norfolk Island to England & Fiji to United States. (2) 200T Lot 335 335 PS B "TERRITORIES" (UNSTAMPED) ISSUES: ditto, commercial usage to England with Gilbert & Ellice Islands KGVI 2d & 5d tied by light 'POST OFFICE/ABEMAMA' cds, minor opening fault at top. Rare: the first example we have recorded used from the Gilbert & Ellice Islands. 400T 336 PS A "TERRITORIES" (UNSTAMPED) ISSUES: 1947 'AIRLETTER' on blue stock AP1v (AS-2) philatelic usages from Norfolk Island (1951 & 1953) both to England & from New Hebrides (1950) to United States. (3) 250T Lot 337 337 PS A "TERRITORIES" (UNSTAMPED) ISSUES: ditto, commercial usage in 1952 from Norfolk Island to United States. A rare usage of this item, the only other example we have seen used from Christmas Island having sold for $333 in our auction of 10/3/2007.
