He has recorded with Slam Stewart, Phil Woods, Tom Harrell, Peter Appleyard, Richard Wyans, Bucky Pizzarelli, Tony Marino, Mike Holober, Sherrie Maricle, Ann Chamberlain, Steve Gilmore, Steve Brown, Tom Whaley, Bill Carter, Fred Hersh and Gene Bertoncini. Al contributed to Slam Stewart's final recording in 1987, 'The Cats Are Swingin', and Jacque Tara Washington's recording, 'Jazz Passions,' as a performer, arranger and producer as well as serving as co-producer and performer on Bill Carter's recordings: 'Faith in a New Key,' 'Dancing Day' and 'Fragile Incarnation.' Al founded, and for thirty-seven years was the director of, the Jazz Ensemble Program at Binghamton University. He retired from his faculty responsibilities in 1997. Howard Alden- Jazz Guitarist “He may be the best of his generation,” writes Owen Cordle in JAZZ TIMES. George Kanzler of the NEWARK STAR LEDGER proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the NEW YORK POST observes that he is “ ...one of the very ﬁnest young guitarists working today.” It seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. Born in Newport Beach, California, in 1958, Howard began playing at age ten, inspired by recordings of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Benny Goodman, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and George Van Eps. Soon he was working professionally around Los Angeles playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979, Alden went east, for a summer in Atlantic City with vibraphone legend Red Norvo, and continued to perform with him frequently for several years. Upon moving to New York City in 1982, Aldenʼs skills, both as soloist and accompanist, were quickly recognized and sought-out for appearances and recordings with such artists as Joe Bushkin, Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Warren Vache` and Woody Herman. He has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike, adding Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Mel Powell, Bud Freeman, Kenny Davern, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and George Van Eps, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski to his list of impressive credits.

I’m Hip -- Please Don’t Tell My Father John Pizzarelli Quartet-- September 7th at The Whitefish Performing Arts Center September 8th at Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. John Pizzarelli is a great storyteller, and that’s a tremendous asset for an entertainer. But he’s also a terrific jazz guitarist fond of playful and frisky musical conversations as well. Add to that, he sings, respectfully interpreting the Great American Songbook with easygoing crooning and occasional wisecracking humor. John Pizzarelli is the son of journeyman swing guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. He still occasioinally performs with his famous father Bucky, who is now late into his 80’s. John’s first release was entitled, I’m Hip -- Please Don’t Tell My Father (1983). John Pizzarelli has recorded over twenty albums since 1990, and he’s appeared on more than forty albums of other recording artists including Sir Paul McCartney, James Taylor and Rosemary Clooney. The John Pizzarelli Trio opened several dates on Frank Sinatra’s 1993 tour, and he was part of the legendary vocalist’s 80th birthday celebration at Carnegie Hall. John’s a lucky guy because work and play for him are pretty much the same thing. He likes to describe his sound as updated old-school. John Pizzarelli May 2012 John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, was called “Hip with a wink” by Town & Country, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star. When he performs with his wife, singer/actress Jessica Molaskey, and his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, they were labeled “the First Family of Cool” by the San Francisco Chronicle and “the von Trapps on Martinis” by The New Yorker. According to The New York Times, “the Pizzarelli-Molaskey duo are as good as it gets in any entertainment medium.” After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” And the Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Before a recent show in the northwest, the local paper quipped “John Pizzarelli is so impossibly cool, he shouldn’t be legally allowed to enter Oregon.” Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. BUCKY!By Tony Mottola Jersey Jazz Editor n the entertainment world some artists rise to such I iconic stature that just their first names suffice for instant recognition. Frank, Bing, Ella and Elvis come readily to mind. And in the world of jazz guitar there is only one “Bucky.” Born John Pizzarelli, he was nicknamed Buckskin by his father, and began, like so many other guitarists of his generation, playing the banjo. At 17, the Paterson native toured with the Vaughn Monroe Band as a guitarist, and he returned to the band in 1946 after service in the US Army. In the early 1950s, Bucky came back to New Jersey and quickly established himself as one of the most in-demand session players in New York’s then bustling recording studios. Concurrently, he worked as a staff musician at the NBC Television Network, where he played on The Tonight Show,Mitch Miller’s Sing Along With Mitch and many other broadcasts. All the while Bucky kept up a breathtaking schedule of live performances — here, there and everywhere — prompting his friend and frequent playing partner, guitarist George Barnes, to dub him “The Whirling Dervish.” Recently, the peripatetic Pizzarelli stayed put long enough to give an in-depth interview to Jersey Jazz’s Schaen Fox and we’re pleased to bring that to you in this month’s issue on page 16. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Based on a Kellogg’s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit “stuck” trying to write something for “Sgt. Pepper.” Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. 3 Overdubs followed with John’s lead vocal and Paul’s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles’ 1964 and 1965 tours. The Beatles - I’m Only Sleeping - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John’s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, 1966. John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of “I’m Only Sleeping” that The Beatles discovered the “backwards guitar.” On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order.

For 41 years, Sarasota has been a mecca for jazz musicians and fans. What does the future hold? BY JO MORELLO THEY’VE PLAYED WITH THE WORLD’S GREATEST BANDS; PROVIDED MUSIC FOR MOVIES, BROADWAY, THE WHITE HOUSE AND ROYALTY; RECORDED THOU- SANDS OF ALBUMS; WON MYRIAD AWARDS; AND COMPOSED UNFORGETTABLE SONGS. These acclaimed jazz musicians could live anywhere;. Dozens chose here. Why? Because of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. For over 40 years, Sarasota and its environs have been home to legendary musicians at the peak of their careers and not ready to pack up their instruments. We love their music even when we don’t know their names. Their résumés are long, their plaudits plentiful. (The Club, by the way, was to have hosted its 41st Sarasota Jazz Festival, head- lined by The Manhattan Transfer, earlier this month at Nathan Benderson Park, but unfortunately had to cancel due to ongoing pandemic concerns.) Famous musicians began moving here in the 1980s and ’90s because of the Jazz Club “and its reputation for excellence and our Floridian delights,” says National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and Jazz Club honorary member for life Dick Hyman, who’s based in Venice. The jazz cats found gigs with other musicians here, and if they had to travel, transportation was convenient. When I joined the Club in 1990 as a volunteer, I met founder Hal Davis, presi- dent-elect Jerry Roucher and his wife Nancy, Hyman and his wife Julia, and many tal- ented musicians. (Full disclosure: I held several positions with the Club until Covid hit last March.) I’ve gotten to know many others involved since then.
