Part 2 of Selected Discography
Part 2 of Selected Discography Milt Hinton Solos Compiled by Ed Berger (1949-2017) - Librarian, journalist, music producer, photographer, historian, and former Associate Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University. This is a chronological list of representative solos by Hinton as a sideman in a variety of settings throughout his career. Although not definitive, Milt was such a consistent soloist that one could cite many other equally accomplished performances. In some cases, particularly from the 1930s when bass solos were relatively rare, the recordings listed contain prominent bass accompaniment. JAZZ WORTH READING: “THE BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES: FACES, PLACES and NIGHTLIFE 1937-1962″ Posted on February 20, 2014
From Michael Steinman’s blog JAZZ LIVES MAY YOUR HAPPINESS INCREASE. Jazz: where "lives" is both noun and verb JAZZ WORTH READING: “THE BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES: FACES, PLACES AND NIGHTLIFE 1937-1962″ Posted on February 20, 2014 Some of my readers will already know about Richard Vacca’s superb book, published in 2012 by Troy Street Publishing. I first encountered his work in Tom Hustad’s splendid book on Ruby Braff, BORN TO PLAY. Vacca’s book is even better than I could have expected. Much of the literature about jazz, although not all, retells known stories, often with an ideological slant or a “new” interpretation. Thus it’s often difficult to find a book that presents new information in a balanced way. BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES is a model of what can be done. And you don’t have to be particularly interested in Boston, or, for that matter, jazz, to admire its many virtues. Vacca writes that the book grew out of his early idea of a walking tour of Boston jazz spots, but as he found out that this landscape had been obliterated (as has happened in New York City), he decided to write a history of the scene, choosing starting and ending points that made the book manageable. The book has much to offer several different audiences: a jazz- lover who wants to know the Boston history / anecdotal biography / reportage / topography of those years; someone with local pride in the recent past of his home city; someone who wishes to trace the paths of his favorite — and some obscure — jazz heroes and heroines. -
John Pizzarelli and Freddy Cole: Celebrating the Centenary of Nat
TD Jazz Concerts John Pizzarelli and Freddy Cole: Celebrating the centenary of Nat King Cole @ 100 Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 8:00pm Pre-concert Talk at 7:00pm This is the 913th concert in Koerner Hall John Pizzarelli, vocals & guitar Mike Karn, bass Konrad Paszkudzki, piano Freddy Cole, piano & vocals Elias Bailey, bass Randy Napoleon, guitar Quentin Baxtor, drums John Pizzarelli World-renowned guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli, established as one of the prime contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, has expanded that repertoire by including the music of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and The Beatles. Having concentrated on the music of Paul McCartney, Johnny Mercer, and Frank Sinatra over the last two years, Pizzarelli has returned to the bossa nova of Jobim with his 2017 release Sinatra & Jobim @ 50. With co- vocalist Daniel Jobim, grandson of the legendary Brazilian composer, the two explore songs Sinatra and Jobim recorded, as well as add new songs flavoured with the spirit of the classic Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim album. Pizzarelli has toured North America, South America, Asia, and Europe, performing shows centered on Frank Sinatra’s centennial, the songs of Johnny Mercer, and a McCartney program, in which his quartet is joined by strings and a horn section. He also tours on a double bill with pianist Ramsey Lewis. While plenty of jazz greats influenced his work, Nat King Cole has been Pizzarelli’s hero and foundation over the last 25 years. He devoted two albums to his music, Dear Mr. -

Oshman Family JCC Welcomes the John Pizzarelli Quartet
MEDIA ALERT Oshman Family JCC Welcomes the John Pizzarelli Quartet Who: Famed jazz guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli, one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook. What: Performing in concert When: Friday, December 11 | 8:00 PM Where: Schultz Cultural Arts Hall of the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto, CA Why: Pizzarelli has been called “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by the Toronto Star. After his smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” The Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, John has been a special guest on recordings for major pop artist such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Von Ronk, as well as leading jazz artists like Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Johnny Frigo, Buddy DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, Bucky Pizzarelli. He was featured opposite Donna Summer, Jon Secada and Roberta Flack on the GRAMMY® Award-winning CD, Songs from the Neighborhood: The Music of Mr. -
HA-Bio New 2010
Howard Alden- Jazz Guitarist “He may be the best of his generation,” writes Owen Cordle in JAZZ TIMES. George Kanzler of the NEWARK STAR LEDGER proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the NEW YORK POST observes that he is “ ...one of the very finest young guitarists working today.” It seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. Born in Newport Beach, California, in 1958, Howard began playing at age ten, inspired by recordings of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Benny Goodman, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and George Van Eps. Soon he was working professionally around Los Angeles playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979, Alden went east, for a summer in Atlantic City with vibraphone legend Red Norvo, and continued to perform with him frequently for several years. Upon moving to New York City in 1982, Aldenʼs skills, both as soloist and accompanist, were quickly recognized and sought-out for appearances and recordings with such artists as Joe Bushkin, Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Warren Vache` and Woody Herman. He has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike, adding Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Mel Powell, Bud Freeman, Kenny Davern, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and George Van Eps, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski to his list of impressive credits. -
