If we read only the popular histories available on the Civil War period we get the impression that the New Mexicans had never volunteered for military duty before….that they were untrustworthy, untried, and their very enlistment was a great experiment of sorts, almost amounting to the controversial use of black troops in the eastern states. This is not quite how it was. We cannot look at the situation in the southwest with the same political, religious and cultural points of view that existed in the ‘mainstream’ United States. People here did not have any real experience with the issues of Negro slavery, State’s Rights, and economics as they existed east of the Mississippi.

THOMPSON he mood in the capital was one of confusion and great anxiety on the cold wintry morning of 1 February 1862. New York–born Surveyor Gen. TJohn Anderson Clark watched the arrival of several militia companies, all scurrying south to meet a large Confederate Army that was reported to be moving out of the Mesilla Valley. “Today was the arrival in the town of two or three small companies of yeomanry on their way to war,” Clark recorded. “They leave tomorrow for the South—of course these undisciplined troops will not be taken to meet the enemy in the open field, but will be used as guerrillas and to garrison posts.”1 The next day, after the militia marched to St. Francis Church and lined up in formation, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy appeared in full regalia on the steps of the adobe edifice.

    BGES Civil War Field University: Sibley’s 1862 New Mexico Campaign The potential of the territories had precipitated the Civil War. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln and his Republican Party proposed to stop the spread of slavery. Gold had been discovered in California and silver was being mined in the mountains of Colorado. The gold had quickly populated California and brought it to statehood and the wealth ensured the country would continue to move west. This certainty demanded a trans-continental railroad and the competition for it had been tremendous. Confederate President Jefferson Davis understood that much of the future of his country would depend upon gaining a foothold in those territories. In early 1861, Henry Hopkins Sibley, a West Point trained officer who had been stationed out west proposed taking a force from Texas into New Mexico to sweep the undermanned Federal forts protecting the Santa Fe Trail and into Colorado to control the silver mines. A victory that evicted the Federals from the New Mexico territory would also provide the Confederacy control of the overland routes into California. It was a bold plan worthy of a nation-state and Davis agreed. This is the story of that expedition which ended in defeat for the Confederacy—they would never return. I had a working knowledge of the Civil War thanks to Ken Burn's The Civil War on PBS. As I saw Union and Confederate soldiers in the far removed west during the movie I looked at my father and stated that this wasn't true. He assured me that it was in fact true and that there had been a campaign fought in the New Mexican Territory during the Civil War. As he went on to describe the events I was instantly captivated.

"G100m Over Our Fair Land": Socorro County During the Civil War JERRY THOMPSON Before and during the centennial celebration of the Civil War in the early 1960s, a profusion of scholarship appeared on the war in New Mexico Territory. As expected, several major studies concentrated on the Confederate invasion of the territory. 1 Biographies have also ap­ peared on the commanders of the two armies, Generals Edward Rich­ ard Sprigg Canby and Henry Hopkins Sibley, and on such diverse warriors as the unfatiguable Federal Colonel Manuel Chaves, the cou­ rageous Captain Alexander McRae, and the flamboyant and unpredict­ able Captain James "Paddy" Graydon. 2 Confederates who have caught the attention of historians include the heavy-drinking and heroic Colo­ nel Tom Green and the Indian-hating Colonel John Robert Baylor.3 Article topics range from describing everything from whether the re­ treating Federals from Fort Fillmore had whiskey in their canteens in July 1861, as it was widely reported at the time, to exactly who guided the "Pikes Peakers" in the destruction of the Rebel supply train in the depths of Apache Canyon during the Battle ofGlorieta.
