Frage: Wissen Sie, daß Sie in dem Haus, an dem Sie unaus- gesetzt bauen, auch selbst wohnen müssen? Also nicht einfach drauf- los bauen. Auch nicht wahllos und unbedacht zum Material greifen. Die Korrektur von Baufehlern erfordert doppelte Zeit, doppelte , : »'•' *l^'ii'ii'f'l'iilill" 'i'i'll'l'|-V Arbeit, doppeltes Material und doppelte Kosten. Zuerst planen, mit Vorsicht und Bedacht planen. Dann ebenso vorsichtig und mit Bedacht handeln, bauen, Stein um Stein in harmonischer Folge aufeinanderlegen. Vergessen Sie dabei nie, daß Sie für sich bauen. Wählen Sie schlechtes Material, haben Sie ein schlechtes Haus. Verlieren Sie viel Zeit beim Bauen, laufen Sie Gefahr, nicht rechtzeitig fertig zu werden. Es kommt also einzig und allein auf Sie an. Machen Sie keine andern Menschen für Ihre baulichen Mangel verantwortlich. Nach dem Plan des Himmels sind Sie Ihr eigner Architekt und Ihr eigner Baumeister. Sorgen Sie dafür, daß es wirklich schlüsselfertig ist — IHR Haus, bevor Sie die Kelle aus der Hand legen. Vergessen Sie nicht, daß Ihnen Ihre Angehörigen und Ihre Mitmenschen beim Bauen zuschauen. Wie man Sie bauen sieht, so könnten sie sich veranlaßt fühlen, ebenfalls zu bauen. Bauen Sie richtig, werden auch sie richtig bauen. Bauen Sie falsch, werden auch ihre Häuser die gleichen Mängel aufweisen. Sie sehen: es ist gar nicht so leicht, mit der großen Aufgabe, die Ihnen der Herr gegeben hat, fertig zu werden. Es ist gar nicht so einfach, sein eigner Baumeister zu sein. Nur durch Gehorsam und mit Gottes Hilfe kann das Werk gelingen. Nicht vergessen!!! I begyndelsen af 1980'erne voksede Kirken med over en kvart million nye medlemmer hvert år. I 1982 passerede Kirkens medlemstal fem millioner. En sådan vækst i løbet af et årti medfører store udfordringer: Hvordan kan generalautoriteterne på effektiv vis bevare forbindelsen til det hurtigt voksende antal kirkeenheder og hellige over hele verden? Hvordan kan Kirkens programmer og aktiviteter bedst imødekomme medlemmernes behov, som lever under meget forskellige forhold? Hvordan kan templets velsignelser stilles til rådighed for alle medlemmer? Den voksende kirke havde behov for flere ledere til at møde udfordringerne i en ny tid. De Halvfjerds' Første Kvorum organiseres Det voksende antal stave og missioner i Kirken lagde et større tidspres på generalautoriteterne. Der var flere stavskonferencer, som de skulle deltage i, og flere missionsdistrikter, som havde behov for tilsyn. Fem højpræster var blevet kaldet i april 1941 til at tjene som assistenter til De Tolv for at hjælpe dem med de voksende administrative pligter.

Kimball Maurine Carr Ward Introduction When I learned that Stan Kimball had retired from Southern Illinois University and moved to St. George, Utah, with his wife, Violet, I knew that I needed to interview him. For years I had read his articles, listened to him present papers, watched him in TV documentaries, and used his guide books, and I wanted to learn more about him. So, armed with pages of questions, I set out for St. George. There, on the fourth of June, 2002, I had a delightful time eating ice cream and drinking grape juice on Stan’s sun porch, which overlooked the whole of St. George. Then I turned the tape recorder on and listened to Stan tell his story. The Interview MAURINE: I talked to a lot of people before I came to this interview to find out how they perceived you, Stan. You’re viewed as a Mormon Church historian, a teacher, a proud descendant of Heber C. Kimball, and a trail activist. I have heard you called the grand-daddy of the Mormon trails and the Western trails, and a maverick. I’m interviewing you today to find out, in your own words, who you really are. STAN: I plead guilty to all of those and other less flattering descriptions of myself. I’ve been around seventy-five years and most of those years I’ve traded a bit on being either the grandson of J. STATHIS WOODROW WILSON, WHILE STILL A PROFESSOR at Princeton, told his students in 1900 that he "would never read a book if it were possible for me to talk half an hour with the man who wrote it." Unfortunately, most of us seldom have the opportunity to converse with authors as President Wilson recom- mends. As a result we are left to browsing among our favorite bookstores and reviewing the thousands of reviews which burst forth anew each month. Further complicating the whole process is the sheer volume of books being published today. Those readers interested in Mormon topics likewise con- tinue to experience prodigious growth in the selections which might con- ceivably appeal to them. Even the most casual reading of the some three hundred books which have been selected for inclusion in the bibliography (encompassing the period from late 1974 to early 1978) will find several studies which will be of more than passing interest. Perhaps even more important, however, is the realization that "church books" have become a big business. Equally significant is the vast number of older books on Mormonism now being reprinted. A separate compilation of the reprints which are currently available has been prepared by Gregory A. Prince. In the end, apart from some few works which genuinely enrich our understand- ing, examination of most of the studies here listed call to mind the words of Francis Bacon: "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested."
