Abstract: Fatty acids composition of the marine snails Phyllonotus pomum and Chicoreus brevifrons (Muricidae). Muricid species of P. pomum and C. brevifrons are of economic importance in the Caribbean. This study includes a comparative evaluation of fatty acid content in the total lipid composition of Phyllonotus pomum and Chicoreus brevifrons. Snail samples were collected during the rainy, dry and transition seasons, in Punta Arena, Sucre (Venezuela). Total lipids were extracted and the specific fatty acid contents were analyzed by gas chromatography. Lipid concentrations varied between 0.87 and 1.85%, with minimum and maximum values corresponding to C. brevifrons collected during rainy and dry seasons, respectively. In the case of total lipids, a high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids (57.21-70.05%) was observed followed by saturated fatty acids (20.33-31.94%), during all seasons. The polyunsaturated occurred in higher proportion among the unsaturated fatty acids, except for P. pomum which showed higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids (38.95%) dur- ing the transition season. The prevailing fatty acids were: C14:0, C16:0, C18:0, C20:1, C22:1 ω-11, C22:1 ω-9, C18:3 ω-3, C20:5 ω-3 and C22:6 ω-3, among which docosahexaenoic acid was the predominant polyunsaturated fatty acid, showing values between 4.62 and 33.11%. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

El presente trabajo tuvo la fina- lidad de analizar algunos aspectos reproductivos de la especie en la laguna de La Restinga, isla de Margarita, Venezuela, en cuatro estaciones de esta, desde la zona más interna a la zona más externa. Se recolectaron muestras mensualmente para determinar la proporción por sexos; además, fueron extraídas del medio algunas posturas para su descripción y la observación del crecimiento inicial de la especie. -

[email protected], [email protected] RESUMEN rca zebra, constituye uno de los recursos pesqueros de mayor impacto económico en el nororiente de Venezuela, ya que forma bancos de importancia comercial. Durante un periodo de nueve meses (mayo 2010- agosto 2011) se identificó, cuantificó y describió la estructura comunitaria de los organismos provenientes de la pesquería de arrastre efectuada por los pescadores de la zona; así mismo, se calculó la Abiomasa y abundancia de los diferentes grupos taxonómicos para realizar Curvas de Comparación Abundancia-Biomasa (ABC), con el objetivo de determinar el grado de afectación por la actividad de arrastre. En total se contabilizaron 3 249 organismos, pertenecientes a 130 especies, agrupadas en cinco Phylla: Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda, Echinodermata y Chordata. La diversidad total de Sanders fue de 122.9. Entre los taxones más diversos se encontraron los moluscos (70.87) y poliquetos (29.91). Los moluscos presentaron la mayor abundancia, seguidos de los poliquetos, crustáceos, equinodermos y ascidias. El mayor aporte en biomasa la mostraron los moluscos y equinodermos. Las especies constantes fueron: Mithraculus forceps, Phallucia nigra, Echinometra lucunter, Eunice rubra y Pinctada imbricata. -

La distinción taxonómica es una medida de diversidad que presenta una serie de ventajas que dan connotación relevante a la ecología teórica y aplicada. La utilidad de este tipo de medida como otro método para evaluar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos de fondos blandos del Golfo de Batabanó (Cuba) se comprobó mediante el uso de los índices de distinción taxonómica promedio (Delta+) y la variación en la distinción taxonómica (Lambda+) de las comunidades de moluscos. Para este propósito, se utilizaron los inventarios de especies de moluscos bentónicos de fondos blandos obtenidos en el periodo 1981-1985 y en los años 2004 y 2007. Ambos listados de especies fueron analizados y comparados a escala espacial y temporal. La composición taxonómica entre el periodo y años estudiados se conformó de 3 clases, 20 órdenes, 60 familias, 137 géneros y 182 especies, observándose, excepto en el nivel de clase, una disminución no significativa de esta composición en 2004 y 2007. A escala espacial se detectó una disminución significativa en la riqueza taxonómica en el 2004. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en Delta+ y Lambda+ a escala temporal, pero si a escala espacial, hecho que se puede atribuir al efecto combinado del incremento de las actividades antropogénicas en la región con los efectos inducidos por los huracanes. -

E-mail: [email protected] Resumen Se denomina imposex a la aparición de caracteres sexuales secundarios en hembras de neogasterópodos producidos por la exposición a tributil-estaño (TBT). No existen hasta la fecha reportes de este fenómeno en el Caribe sur, donde habitan poblaciones de gasterópodos marinos que son comestibles y explotados comercialmente. Con el fin de determinar si el fenómeno de imposex afecta a poblaciones de gasterópodos, realizamos muestreos en diferentes zonas en Isla Margarita y la zona continental de Venezuela con distintos niveles de actividad náutica. Las especies afectadas fueron Chicoreus brevifrons, Chicoreus (Phylonotus) margaritensis y Leucozonia nasa; sin embargo, no se encontraron hembras con la vagina obstruida. Se encontró imposex en una laguna costera con alta densidad de botes pintados con anti-incrustantes, mientras que en costas abiertas y con bajo tránsito marino el fenómeno no fue observado. Una encuesta realizada con dueños de embarcaciones reveló que el TBT no se utiliza desde dos a tres años previos al presente estudio, pero ha sido reemplazado con otras pinturas anti- incrustantes. -

Statistical analysis were done using Taxonomic Dis- tinctness tests and Trophic Diversity inferences. No statistical significant differences were found between past (sambaquis) and present day inventories of malacofauna. It is concluded that sam- baquis can be valuable proxies of mollusks biodiversity from Late Holocene. Furthermore, it is supported that the incorporation of information from archaeozoological vestiges to biodiversity studies can bring a historical and evolutionary perspective for the field.
