A total of six genera and 10 species of marine gastropods belonging to the family Epitoniidae were collected from dredges of the continental slope off Brazil during the development of the REVIZEE (Live Resources of the Economic Exclusive Zone) Program. These species, referable to the genera Alora, Amaea, Cycloscala, Epitonium, Gregorioiscala, and Opalia, are reported from bathyal depths off northeastern Brazil. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Epitonium ferminense n. sp., from off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Los Angeles County, California, is described and compared with its most similar congeners. Keywords: Epitonium, new taxa, wentletrap Introduction This is a continuation of the research that was begun previously by Dr. James H. McLean and is based on material he examined in connection with the epitoniid section of his monograph covering the northeast Pacific gastropods. In the course of his research, he concluded some specimens were sufficiently distinctive to warrant being described as species new to science. Brown (2018) included a description of a number of these species. An additional new species is described herein. Material and Methods Specimens were made available on loan for examination using a stereoscopic microscope. Because examined these specimens were all dead shells, the examination was limited to the protoconch and teleoconch sculpture. La distinción taxonómica es una medida de diversidad que presenta una serie de ventajas que dan connotación relevante a la ecología teórica y aplicada. La utilidad de este tipo de medida como otro método para evaluar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos de fondos blandos del Golfo de Batabanó (Cuba) se comprobó mediante el uso de los índices de distinción taxonómica promedio (Delta+) y la variación en la distinción taxonómica (Lambda+) de las comunidades de moluscos. Para este propósito, se utilizaron los inventarios de especies de moluscos bentónicos de fondos blandos obtenidos en el periodo 1981-1985 y en los años 2004 y 2007. Ambos listados de especies fueron analizados y comparados a escala espacial y temporal. La composición taxonómica entre el periodo y años estudiados se conformó de 3 clases, 20 órdenes, 60 familias, 137 géneros y 182 especies, observándose, excepto en el nivel de clase, una disminución no significativa de esta composición en 2004 y 2007. A escala espacial se detectó una disminución significativa en la riqueza taxonómica en el 2004. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en Delta+ y Lambda+ a escala temporal, pero si a escala espacial, hecho que se puede atribuir al efecto combinado del incremento de las actividades antropogénicas en la región con los efectos inducidos por los huracanes. -

FEBRUARY 1994 CHAPTER 12 MARINE MOLLUSCS OF THE COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS Compared to other localities in the eastern Indian Ocean, the molluscs of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were relatively well known prior to the Western Australian Museum survey in February 1989. Two short papers on the molluscs of the atolls were presented by Marratt (1879) and Rees (1950). A much more extensive list was prepared by Abbott (1950). Mrs. R.E.M. Ostheimer and Mrs. V.O. Maes spent the first two months of 1963 on Cocos collecting for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, as part of the International Indian Ocean Expedition. aes (1967) presented a complete list of the species collected, and included records of species recorded by Marratt (1879) or Abbott (1950) that she did not collect on the islands. A total of 504 species were recorded, 379 of which were identified to species. With their longer time on the atoll Maes and Ostheimer naturally collected more species than the Western Australian Musuem expedition, but their collections were primarily restricted to relatively shallow water as they did not scuba-dive. They did however do some dredging in the lagoon. The Museum team collected in many of the same localities as Maes and Ostheimer, but also dived in a number of areas. Because of this many of the species which live in deeper water that were recorded by only a few specimens by Maes (1967) were shown to in fact be common. -

Statistical analysis were done using Taxonomic Dis- tinctness tests and Trophic Diversity inferences. No statistical significant differences were found between past (sambaquis) and present day inventories of malacofauna. It is concluded that sam- baquis can be valuable proxies of mollusks biodiversity from Late Holocene. Furthermore, it is supported that the incorporation of information from archaeozoological vestiges to biodiversity studies can bring a historical and evolutionary perspective for the field.
