I urge you not where it seems most appropriate to start the walk — at Bristol’s first to miss this out! The section from Avonmouth Bridge to Clifton takes bridge. The Establishment of the Head Port of Gloucester, 1565-1584 Alexander Higgins A thesis submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Master of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts, Department of Historical Studies, November 2012. 24,884 words. Abstract After a fifteen-year campaign, Gloucester became an independent head port in 1580. This effectively ended Bristol’s long-standing jurisdiction over the Gloucestershire reaches of the River Severn and resulted in the loss of the greater part of Bristol’s historic port. This dissertation explores Bristol’s objections to this change and examines the prosecution of their complaints through the equity side of the Exchequer court. Primarily, this study focuses upon two commissions created by the Crown to review the case. The interrogatories and depositions produced by these commissions are used to explore the nature of this dispute, the motivation behind Bristol’s objections and why Gloucester ultimately retained its head port status. The first chapter focuses upon the practical implementation of the commissions. Rather than relying upon the legal records alone, this study uses letters, accounts and reports produced by the two parties to explore the workings of a commission. This approach reveals the extent of Bristol and Gloucester’s attempts to manipulate proceedings to their own advantage. These findings have significant implications on the impartiality of Tudor legal process and the reliability of the Exchequer records. The second chapter examines the findings of the two commissions to assess the nature and strength of Bristol’s arguments. It is shown that many of these arguments were unsubstantiated. -

Local Cycling and Walking Plan Consultation Response March 2020 Executive Summary Bristol Cycling Campaign welcomes the production of a region-wide plan for cycling improvements, which is something it has been calling for since 2013. We are pleased to see that a number of key cycling routes in the city, which have large untapped demand, are proposed to receive improvements between now and 2036. We support high quality cycling infrastructure, suitable for All Ages and Abilities (AAA), across the city. This can be separated cycle paths, routes through green spaces away from roads or traffic filtered quietways, used as appropriate. Some of the proposed improvements in the LCWIP meet this high standard. We support these in principle now and will work with the local authorities through future consultations to secure their successful implementation. Unfortunately, we do not believe the level of ambition is anywhere near high enough for a 16 year plan, in the face of a climate emergency. To significantly increase levels of walking and cycling, and reduce accidents and injuries, a step change in infrastructure is required in the next 5 years. Instead, the LCWIP proposes modest improvements to existing cycle corridors. There are very limited proposals for key nodes on the network which have major flaws, such as the Centre and Temple Gate. We call on WECA and the four local councils to be ambitious and put forward plans for a world class safe walking and cycling network, tackling the climate emergency head on, while simultaneously boosting the local economy and rejuvenating our local high streets. The LCWIP as consulted is simply not good enough and the city deserves better. -

In comparison to the amount of research that has been carried out on Royal Navy affairs and its ports and dockyards, few studies have been done on the day to day operations of merchant shipping and civilian ports, especially in the eighteenth century. This thesis attempts to partly redress this by examining at depth the workings of the Port of Bristol and its shipping in this period, using contemporary records where they have survived and a system of cross-referencing where they have not. The physical structure and amenities of the port were subject to close examination, not only to establish whether they were suitable for their purpose, but to observe the effectiveness of the systems that were in place regarding their use. -
