A bag of ashes costs $5 and supposedly it is enough for 100 persons. So it works out to be a nickel per person. But do we sacrifice our time and energy to come to Ash Wednesday Mass just to receive a free nickel’s worth of ashes? I don’t think so. I venture to say that we come to Mass because we desire to return to God who is slow to anger, rich in kind- ness, gracious, and merciful. Perhaps our relationships with family and friends are not where they should be. Or perhaps we want to reset priorities in our lives, to regain freedom in ing or it may devolve into a selfish act of making us more areas of our lives which we have allowed trivial things or appealing according to worldly standards. As we learn to do without and make sacrifices on behalf of others, we open up a space to allow God to lay claim again to our attention. It would not be an exaggeration to say that food is an obsession in our culture. Fasting is not dieting. Just as almsgiving without prayer is philanthropy, fasting without prayer is simply a strict diet. Prayer must be the foundation that supports fast-

Cǐǎdž FǐǍǍǐǘ Mdž—PǓǂǚ ʧ FǂǔǕ LJǐǓ VǐDŽǂǕNJǐǏǔ Fr. Josh Johnson of the Office of Vocations invites you to join in a Lenten Rosary Novena in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. The inten- tion he is asking parishioners to offer up is a day of fasting for “healthy and holy vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our parishes in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.” The fast can be bread and water all day or one regular meal and two small meals with- out any snacks between meals. He also asks parishioners to intercede for those fasting through the recitation of the most holy rosary. These prayers will give all of us the graces we need to persevere in our days of fasting for an increase of healthy and holy vocations to the priesthood and religious life in our land. The Office of Vocations has created an E-book which will equip participants with a reflection on the life and witness of a priest or consecrated religious saint whose story can inspire all of us to strive for holiness in our walk toward eternity. Along with the stories of the saints who have preceded us in our journey to become saints and form saints, our E-book highlights current and historic pic- tures of the , priests and consecrated religious brothers and sisters of our land in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. To view a video of Fr. Josh discussing the rosary for vocations, or to download the e-book, visit www.diobr.org/vocations.
