Premier Men’s Grade – Hedley Howarth Trophy (Major Two Day Championship)

Round 1. 3 November PARNELL vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Colin Maiden Park 2 AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 116/10 C Lowen 44, CK Jasmat 20*, Ollie Pringle 7/37 (15.3), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 2/44 (12), Josh Fisher 1/31 (12) – Harry Miller 7 catches as ‘Keeper And 41/3 Ollie Pringle 2/19 PARNELL 248/7 dec Ben Rae 29, Ollie Pringle 49, Andy Lane 64, Brad Rodden 64, Giacomo Lamplough 20, N Stobart 5/86 TO BE CONTINUED NEXT SATURDAY

The scorebook on Page 1. Speaks for itslf as do the photos that follow. Enough to say that Saturday was a truly outstanding day for our Prems, particularly Ollie Pringle and Harry Miller. Ollie was very well supported by Ganesh and by Josh and then our batsmen showed that there weren’t too many terors in the pitch. First, Ben Rae set ot to dominate the University attack and Ollie, opening in Ben Rainger’s absence, relished a chance to bat instead of languishing at 10 or 11 as he has had to do for Auckland A. – pity he missed out on his 50. Then Andy Lane and Brad Rodden rollicked along – some superb strokeplay as the photos show. To cap it, Giacomo, on Prem debut replacing the injured Dean van Deventer, clobbered 20 off just 7 balls to allow Brad to declare. Enough time left for Ollie and Ganesh to wreck more havoc – 3/15, including Beecroft’s (he an NZ U19 rep.), another catch to Harry, but no more success and the total was 41/3 at stumps.

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – 2 Day Major Championship

3 November Round 1. PARNELL vs PAPATOETOE at Shore Road Reserve 1. PARNELL 300/9 Cam Gibbons 57 (103), Rory O’Brien 54 (109), Sam Klippel 61 (79), Cam Rope 51* Hugh Teesdale 21 (24), PAPATOETOE 14/1 Jesse Simpson 4/23 (9.3) PARNELL WON BY 68 RUNS

Rory O’Brien - 54 Sam Klippel - 61 Cam Rope – 51* COACH (& VICAR) ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: We won the toss and elected to bat on a wind swept day at Shore Road, good decision by our skipper Cam Gibbons as we went on to make 300 for 9 declared off 86.3 overs. Main contributions came from: Cam Gibbons, who along with Rory O'Brien, both made 50's. Cam 57 off 103 balls and Rory 54 off 109 balls, a partnership of 114 off 200 balls. It was hard work upfront and these two gentlemen put their heads down and blunted the attack. Sam Klippel continued his good run of form and added another half century, 61 off 79 balls, along with Cam Ropey who scored yet another half century (undefeated 51) in our total. This allowed our tailender's to accelerate and, a quick fire knock of 21 off 24 balls by debutante Hugh Teesdale (whose opening scoring shot was a 6) and Prasant Dhanjee who scored 16 off 9 balls including another 6. A really good batting display, with the top order setting it up through good partnerships and taking the "wind out of Papatoetoe's sails" so to speak!! We had 11 overs at Papa and succeeded in taking one wicket, Simon Walker getting the initial break through in his 3rd over courtesy of an excellent catch by Will Ormiston at 1st slip. Papa go into next Saturday with 14 runs on the board. A good day at the office by all. [Editor’s note – what an understatement from the Vicar! Few days have been as successful for the Club. Three of the four Senior teams have already secured 1st innings points and our Reserves are extremely well placed, too. Ed.]

Women’s Premier Reserves – T20 Champs. 3 November Round 1. PARNELL vs KUMEU at Huapai Domain

KUMEU 92/2 (20) S Waru 34 PARNELL 95/2 (11) Hetali Patel 50* PARNELL WON BY 8 WICKETS

Hetali Patel – 50 not out and a resounding win to the Team with 9 overs to spare!

Men’s Senior Grades – 2 Day Champs. THIRDS – 4th Grade: 3 November Round 1. PARNELL vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Orakei Domain AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 119/10 (51) Mohan Wali 2/39 (13), Ashwin Haran 3/22 (10), Elliot Pike 5/19 (13.3) PARNELL 126/2 Vishal Patel 62*, Jack Crace 24* TO BE CONTINUED NEXT SATURDAY

Mohan Wali – 2 wickets in his 1st over Ashwin Haran – 3 for 22 off 10 overs with his leggies - CAPTAIN ELLIOT JAFFE REPORTING: Skipper Jaffe won the toss on a green looking pitch, which proved a good call as opening bowler Mohan Wali took 2 wickets in his first over. After a barrage of boundaries from the opposition, Ashwin Haran picked up two important scalps to leave the opposition 67/4 after 20 overs. From this point, the opposition never truly recovered as they slowly stuttered to 119 in 51 overs all out as debutant Elliot Pike produced a beautiful spell of bowling to earn himself a 5-wicket bag. An excellent bowling display from the trio of Elliot Pike (5/19 off 13.3 overs), Ashwin Haran (3/22 off 10 overs), and Mohan Wali (2/39 off 13 overs) secured this dominant performance with the ball. Notable mentions also go to Matt Lobb (0/27 off 8 overs) and Luke O’Toole who started the day as wicketkeeper, then turning out to bowl a great spell (0/7 off 6 overs). Going in to bat, openers Vishal Patel and Luke O’Toole started positively putting on a partnership of 37, before O’Toole departed for 19(28). Absar Ul Hasan came in and in typical fashion grinded out a gritty 12(52) before being ajudged lbw to leave us 72/2. Vishal Patel meanwhile brought up a fashionable 50 and ended the day 62*(99), while Jack Crace came in and scored a quickfire 24*(31) helping us to secure first innings points by the end of the day. At stumps, we are 126/2 with plenty of batting left to come, and a fine opportunity is in our hands to deliver an outright win to set the tone for the season.

FOURTHS – 7th Grade – Two Day Championship: 3 November Round 1. PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Shepherds Park PARNELL 323/6 dec (60) Wesley van Wyk 70, Eli Paewai 104, Lance Pooley 43, Hans Kariyawasam 25. TAKAPUNA 67/3 TO BE CONTINUED NEXT SATURDAY

The Fourths – taken on 20 Oct. vs Kumeu SKIPPER JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: We arrived at Shepherds Park overcoming weather and a heavy winds, both ourselves and the opposition were short on number at the toss which we lost and were sent in to bat. With only one opener from our previous week, we sent Eli Paewai in with Sam Noland which was shortly lived as Noland was trapped plumb in front LBW for 2. Noland was shortly joined by Logan Strange as he was bowled through the gate for 1. We were on the ropes two down with only 10 runs on the board. In came Wesley van Wyk to join Paewai, a partnership of 150 runs taking us on to 160 after 41 overs, when van Wyk departed for 70. This was when our run rate hit full throttle with us scoring at over 10 a over with Pooley hitting a quick fire 42 in a little over 5 overs, then Hans Kariyawasam came in a continued to fire scoring 25. In the 59 over Eli Paewai brought up his maiden century then was brilliantly caught for 104. We closed the innings with 323 runs on the board, we had scored 173 runs off the final 15 overs. With only 20 overs of play in the day we opened with Angus Olliver and James Partridge in some trying conditions, we bowled well and took 3 wickets in the remaining over as Takapuna moved onto 67 at stumps. Special mention needs to go out to Sam Noland for an amazing take to remove one of the danger men. We will be heading back to Shepherds Park next Saturday to hopefully finish the job.

Men’s One Day Grades

3 November Round 3. PARNELL KINGS vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Eastdale Reserve 2. SUBURBS NL 114/10 (29) Aaron 3/25, Sowndar 3/39. Karthik 2/10 (8o 2m) PARNELL 120/5 (20.2) PARNELL WON BY 5 WICKETS CAPTAIN ABRAR REPORTING: It was a windy day, felt like we were playing in Wellington :) We lost our opener Mani as he got injured during last week's game and even before this week's game started we lost another opener Chak and middle order batsman Roopesh as they got hurt during practice :( Started the game with some sad faces due to injuries and the weather, however we tried to keep ourselves strong and win the game. Lost the toss and opponents opted to bat first. Our strike bowler Aaron, as usual, was in good form and got us a breakthrough quickly. The injury drama started again with our other strike bowler Arul hurting his leg. Sowndar and Karthik then took the bowling responsibility and were unplayable as they were swinging the ball really well in windy conditions. Sowndar 3/39 and Karthik who had an incredible spell of 8 overs 2 maidens 2 wickets for just 10runs, made the game easy for us. Aaron 3/25 knocked the tailenders out and the target was just 115. - Sowndar and Arul replaced our striking openers, gave us a good start while others were just relaxing. There was a bit of drama as we lost openers and couple more quick wickets. However Vignesh and Sai took the lead and smashed quick boundaries to finish off the game in just 20 overs, before rain could spoil it.

Presidents’ Grade

3 November Round 2. PARNELL vs GRAFTON UNITED at Victoria Park PARNELL 173/7 (35) GRAFTON UNITED 103/10 (28.2) PARNELL WON BY 70 RUNS SKIPPER CHRIS LAYCOCK REPORTING: If last week’s domination of Sri Lanka needed to be backed up with a solid performance, it certainly was, on a blustery overcast Victoria Park. The Pressies “benevolent” captain having won the toss mixed up the batting order to give our untested newbies a chance to show their worth. Rudi (63/70) and Flash (23/22) set a high standard, playing thoughtfully on a difficult, uneven, lime based artificial wicket.

Ruchir (23/32) continued in similar fashion showing his sub continental flair for wristy shots off his pads. A few quick wickets mid innings slowed the run rate and the forecast of 220 was looking a little out of reach. The experienced tail did it the “hard way” with cheeky singles and ones turned into twos and we finished up 175/7.

The worry of being a little short on runs didn’t last long as wickets began to fall. Robbo (4-15-5) finally got the figures he so often deserves. Flash (2-3-2.2) and Jay (2-16-4) and Baby G (1-11-4) proved that bowling with Rudi (0-15-7) at 2.1 RPO can be quite rewarding. Ruchir grabbed himself the catch of the season so far with a screamer at gully.

Grafton folded for 103 after only 28.2 overs making the efforts of our batsmen look all the more impressive (spoken like a true batsman) Well played boys.

st Saint Kentigern Boys’ School 1 XI – Winner, Auckland T20 Active Cup

Saint Kentigern Boys’ School 1st XI Congratulations to the Saint Kentigern Boys’ School 1st XI who won the Auckland T20 Active Cup Final last Tuesday vs Saint Kentigern College! Our Juniors – Finally Underway on 26/27 October

Grade 1. 5 Year olds - their cricketing careers all ahead of them

And, on Friday evenings, not only the kids but all the parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts – wonderful gatherings!

YEAR 5. PARNELL LATHAM vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY VIKINGS – Manager/Coach Gareth McCulloch reporting Great to be underway for cricket for the season. Team Latham really enjoyed their first game of hard ball cricket. We had a first achievement today. Georgia Macdonald (only girl in our team) got a hattrick today, all wickets were bowled. Georgia returned figures of 4 wickets for 2 runs off 3 overs. Simply outstanding bowling with figures to match. It is important to note the runs scored were a wide and a no ball with no scoring shots – The two runs are gross runs without any deductions of the outs! Georgia was a very deserved receiver of the team player of the day award.

GRADE 6. PARNELL JARVIS vs SUBURBS NL – Manager/Coach Andrew Kittle reporting: On Saturday, 27 Oct., the G6 Jarvis played their first game of the season against Suburbs New Lynn Sean Solia in the Pink (Premier) grade. The game was played under the new Auckland Cricket rules introduced this year. My initial view is that the new rules are good and will likely achieve what they set out to do - increase participation and hopefully retain kids for longer. Jarvis played very well across all facets of the game and put in a very polished performance for their first game with only one practice under their belts! Everyone contributed to a full team performance. Jarvis batted first and posted a very competitive 169 in 20 overs. Lachie Henwood top scored with 24 followed by Alexander Bhatnagar with 21. However all the boys posted double figures in a very consistent batting performance. The batting was followed by a great bowling and fielding performance with Parnell restricting SNLCC to 74 in 20 overs. Again, very consistent contributions across the whole team. The stand out was Oliver Kittle with 2 overs, 1 maiden 5 for 3 including a hat trick. However, despite the great performances what impressed me the most was the team spirit shown by Jarvis and the way the game was played between the two sides - in the spirit of the game.

Pressies at Millbrook

Weekend before last the Pressies’ A team ventured to Queenstown to do battle with the MCC, aka Millbrook CC, lead by that old campaigner, John Cushen. A. Your Editor accompanied the party as 12th Man/Waterboy. The game was played in great spirit with honours, narrowly, to the MCC. The following photos will give some indication of the excellent facilities and the magnificent setting at Millbrook.

Your Editor took the opportunity to travel down memory lane – over 50 years since I played for Old Boys CC in Invercargill and took social teams to Queenstown and other parts of Central Otago. I found that:

Trees still grow in the main street of Arrowtown (only now bigger) Lake Hayes still reflects mountains and trees

John Polson, my cricketing mate of the mid/late 1960s is fit and well and he showed me the new, and superb, Queenstown Cricket Ground

Dear Fingletoads and Others Interested in Touring,

Just a quick catch up with a couple of items of interest. As always if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me. Before we know it we'll be off to England - can't wait!

I will have more news and information in a couple of weeks.

Bye for now Dianne McDermott

Letter to the Editor

Received by email, Sunday, 28 October: Sir, I perused The New Zealand Herald this morning. All part of my morning ritual. Fortified by breaking news that this newspaper has once again been voted “The Worlds’ Worst” for the eleventh year running. “Consistency is key” said the Editor when someone could be bothered to ask. My eye inevitably alighted on the Sport section and a brief inspection thereof informed me that the Parnell Peaches had been victorious in a one day game played on Saturday. Frankly Sir, would I be correct in believing that the name “peaches” is incorrect? As you know I served Parnell CC diligently for almost twenty five years. I was fresh off the boat from England and was quickly gobbled up by Parnell who were looking for a batting/bowling/wicketkeeping all rounder. The money wasn’t great, a six pack of Steinlager, which has been latterly categorised as a laxative by the World Health Organisation. The team was a rabble. Some of them I remember. Cooke, Bygrave, Coventry, MacGregor, Simpson, Harvey. It was obviously my unsaid task to lick them into shape. Which I did. One doesn’t say “one” when calling for a run, the correct words are “just a quiet one thank you” and “No” was replaced by “There is no run there”. But I digress. Am I to understand Sir that Parnell’s new moniker(look it up) is “Peaches”. Upon opening my COD(Concise Oxford Dictionary) I perceive that the word can mean “a person or thing especially admired”. Back in London in the Swinging Sixties an attractive young lady was often described as a peach or even an absolute peach. At the time I was moonlighting from my studies at London University and playing in a popular music group called “The Fabulous Failures”. For the record we didn’t quite make it to the top although our rendition of “Come on in” dis break into the Belgian charts for one week. Penned by our guitarists Mike Pentland and Chris Metcalfe. But that is of no real consequence. My point is that on our perambulations around the dance halls of southern England, the Tottenham Royal was a particular favourite,on one night we opened for the Dave Clark Five, we met several “peaches” many of whom were latterly plucked, Mr Metcalfe was particularly successful as I remember in the back of our Ford Transit. However, ’tis easy to criticize, more difficult to offer alternatives. NZ Cricket appears hell bent on names that are alliterative, hence the Auckland Aces, Northern Knights et al. So, in defence of that one could offer Poseurs, Premiers (after all Sir John Key does still live in Parnell) or Peasants. However, all those living in Parnell consistently refer to the suburb as Parnell Darling. When telling a cabby where one wants to go one says “Parnell Darling”. I believe I have put my case pithily. I look forward to my next visit to HQ with a degree of anticipation ever eager to roar on our little darlings. Most sincerely, Anon.

To which your Editor replied: Dear Anon, "Peaches" - my mind, too, boggled a while back when this nickname first surfaced. I think it originated from banter between the ACA author and Dave Goddard, former Prem captain - remarks being made about the colour of our OD kit. It has continued, rather as a standing joke between the two. Dave has departed on OE so I am surprised that the nickname is still in use - Parnell is the only Prem team given a nickname. One must assume it is meant as a term of endearment - or, at least, one hopes so. Apart from colour, "Peaches" can be applied in many ways - "he bowled a peach ...." etc., etc. I leave you to conjure up more ...... Our Prems' current OD outfit is garish in the extreme - the Team won this free issue by growing the most impressive moustaches two Novembers back - ie ACA's "Movember Competition" - beating, outright, all other club teams. When first worn, I received many comments, most adverse – a school deputy principal passed on a message of outrage from one of his pupils - and a number asked "how come so many of the Team were so stupid to all sit on the newly painted park bench!" As I said, great to hear from you. Perhaps good that further "words failed you", otherwise you could have been impeached. Look forward to seeing you down at the Club - we have good stocks of rehydration fluid under refrigeration. Yours in similar Anonymity

PS Good thing Dame Edna wasn't the author - otherwise we could be dealing with the "Parnell Possums".
