Update No.139 - 2018 – New Year Successes!

Ian Trott’s Last Parnell Practice

Last evening, Ian took the Prems and Reserves for the final time. After almost 11 seasons I an to taking up the position of Head Cricket Coach at Auckland Grammar School. his time at Parnell Ian has left an indelible mark. Totally dedicated to his task and duties, the Club has benefited hugely. We have a culture and ethic second to none thanks to Ian. Further tributes, formal and informal will follow in the next few weeks but, meantime, we wish Ian every success in his new role and, of course, he will always be welcome back at Parnell.

Parnell Lads on the Big Stage

1. Lockie – with two Parnell lads at Cobham Oval before terrorising the Windies and the Pakistanis for the Black Caps 2. Chappie – another over the fence for the Aces - vs ND at Eden Park 3. Ben even had a bowl for the Aces – vs Wellington, on Christmas Eve, in between and wicketkeeping

The Black Caps – 11 successive wins, what a wonderful season of cricket for New Zealand. Unprecedented success and , hopefully, more to come – after Pakistan we take on Australia, and England. Thanks to Gareth McCulloch for the photo of Lockie & to Craig Speakman for the shots of Chappie & Ben

ACA District Age Group Tournaments

The Peter Badley Shield won by Eastern Districts Peter Badley

An outstanding series of Tournaments for Eastern Districts (Auckland University CC/Grafton United CC/Parnell CC) culminating with us being awarded the Peter Badley Shield as overall Champions. This for the second time in three seasons. This Shield has particular significance for Parnell and Eastern. For a decade Peter Badley, as Coach and Selector (usually sole) of the EDCA U14 teams, produced teams that won 9 Tournaments of the 10 he selected. An outstanding administrator for Parnell, EDCA and, later, Auckland, Eastern’s 2017/18 successes would have given Peter great pleasure!

To date, Auckland has won all four of it’s games to date and leads the Tournament with one game to play. Auckland’s wins have been by 9, 4, 8 and 8 – resounding margins gretly assisted by Conor Ansell’s outstanding btting – opening, he has scored 43*, 108*, 73 and 110. Conor plays for AUCC and had an excellent Years 12/13 Tournament for Eastern. And, early in December, Harry Miller represented Auckland in the National Under 19 Tournament. Auckland, having lost 2 of it’s 5 games, came 2nd to Wellington in the Tournament.

Ben Rae 77 off 81 balls Mitch McCann – 98 off 115 Despite our losing Ben Rainger with the score at 25, Ben Rae and Mitch Mccann made the most of good batting conditions. They rollicked along till, at 138, Ben was caught behind. Mitch carried on making hay helped enthusiastically by Andy Lane

Andy Lane – 58 off 38 Dean van Deventer - 24 off just 10

Andy really upped the pace till he, too, was caught behind – 241/3 and time to really put the skates on. However, neither Brad nor Jesse came off and, most sadly, Mitch failed to get a much deserved ton being caught and bowled by Treadaway – 275/6. Thankfully, after these setbacks, a couple of cameo gems from Dean and Josh took the total to 325 – a formidible total for Birkenhead to chase.

Josh Fisher 16 of 11 Dve Goddard, back at the helm, and 3 wickets Birkenhead responded remarkably well. On a sweltering afternoon Treadawy and others took it to us. No early breakthrough and it was Dave Goddard’s offies that made the difference - - he bowled Steyn at 77 and the captured another at 83. A stumping to Elliot, off Mitch, at 121 but Treadaway and Houghton settled in.

Dean - two quick wickets – above, their Skipper LBW first ball Two wickets to Dean at 181 brought major relief and, from there a result in our favour looked assured.

Was very necessary in the heat Brad toiled Ben Rae took a catch off Brad who then snared Treadaway who’s century was the first against us all season. A very fine all round performance - 109 folowing his 5/56. Ganesh came back and took two wickets and it was all over – a solid win by 62 runs.

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – Limited Overs Major Championship

13 January PARNELL vs. NORTH SHORE Devonport Domain 1. NORTH SHORE 120//10 (30.2)) James Bevin 2/25, Will St John 3/22, Razin Bharde 2/5 PARNELL 121/7 (32.2) Will Ormiston 41, Sam Fastier 24 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 3 WICKETS COACH ‘VICAR’ ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING We started the New Year in far better shape than the way we ended off 2017, with a win against North Shore in a 50 over game played on the Devonport Domain. We welcomed two new players to the Club ranks, Harry Miller, who recently represented the Auckland U19 side as their keeper batsmen and Cam Gibbons (ex Kings College) former NZ U19 opening batsmen and close friend of Mark Chapman. I can only say that their addition to the side augers well for Parnell Club strength going forward.

North Shore won the toss and elected to bat on a very good looking batting wicket. North Shore soon reached a total of 55 off 10 overs and, “the good batting pitch” was proving to be a docile and batter friendly deck. James Bevin, who opened the bowling for us, made early in roads into their batting line up taking 2 for 25 in his opening spell. Wickets then began to fall regularly through some consistent bowling and outstanding fielding and catching. What a pleasure to watch!! We ultimately bowled them out for 120 off 30.2 overs, well below par on the wicket and the short boundaries.

Bowling: Will St John 3 for 22 off 6.2 overs Hamish Robinson bowled very economically taking 1 for 39 off his 10 overs of left arm orthodox. Razin Bharde cleaned up the tail with 2 for 5 off 2 overs, being on a Hatrick in his first over. The two wickets were outstanding catches by Will Ormiston at first slip. Flynn Mac-Sumpter chipped in with a good spell of 1 for 21 off 6 tidy overs. Overall, a great team effort in the field by everyone. Congrats lads

Batting: Opener, Will Ormiston continued his good pre-Christmas form with the bat, batting solidly with the top order, eventually out within sight of the required runs for a very solid 41. Will was assisted by totals in the teens from Flynn MacGregor-Sumper, Callum Douglas and Cam Gibbons. Will then partnered well with the skipper of the day, Sam Fastier 24 and between them they took the total to 113 before Will was out caught pulling a full toss down cover points throat!! We then had a “little” hiatus, losing 4 wickets on the score at 113 before Hamish Robinson and R Bharde settled the nerves taking us over the line 7 wickets down.

As they say in the classics “A win’s a win”

Positives out of the day:

1) Fielding as mentioned before was outstanding

2) Running between the wickets was, at long last, excellent putting so much pressure on the fielding side. 3) Sam Fastier did an excellent job of leading the side on the field

It can only get better from here on in!!

Parnell “Thirds” 13 January. – PARNELL THIRDS vs. BIRKENHEAD at Shore Road Reserve 1. BIRKENHEAD 113/10 (34) PARNELL 114/6 (26) Gurinder Benipal 27, Cameron Rope 52* RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 4 WICKETS

ELLIOT JAFFE, ACTING CAPTAIN, REPORTING: On a humid day at Shore Road, Parnell won the toss and chose to Bowl first against the grades highest run scoring team Birkenhead CC.

This decision to bowl proved to be a good one, as the partnership of Bisschoff and Jaffe had Birkenhead 23/2 after 10 overs. Cameron Willis took 2 quick wickets and a run out from Luke O’Toole left them at 58/5 after 18 overs. 1 wicket for Simon Walker and 2 wickets for both Cameron Rope and Hamish McLean left the visitors blown away, all out for 113 off 34 overs. An excellent fielding display by the team on the day.

Coming out to bat, Cameron Rope and Luke O’Toole set about the chase of 114 with positivity. O’Toole was out for 10, but only paved the way for an excellent partnership between Gurinder Benipal (27) and Cameron Rope (52*) to see us to 102/1 before the drama began. In quick succession, Parnell were brought from 102/2 to 112/6 as the middle order collapsed. Fortunately a level headed Cameron Rope stuck it out to see us over the line and deliver us the crucial points, as we won the match by 4 wickets with 14 overs to spare.

A great day out keeps us well in the hunt for a promotion this season.

Men’s Senior 7th Grade 1 Day Championship Parnell “Fourths”

13 January PARNELL FOURTHS vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Eastdale Reserve 5a.. PARNELL 278/4 (45) Paleru (63) Grey, H (66) O’Brien, R (74) SUBURBS NL 188/10 (43) Partridge, J 1/11 (4), Humphries 1/12 (5), Lim 2/34 (7) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 90 RUNS CAPTAIN JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: We returned to the only ground we had lost at this season against the only team we had lost too this season in either competition, so the boys had a point to prove. We lost the toss and their captain had to go off to consult the other 6 men who had arrived before sending us into Bat, Strangely 5 minutes before we were due to start their Captain then returned asking if he could change his decision, which we replied NO. Paleru & H Grey opened and set a great pace in the run scoring bringing up our 50 in less than 11 overs, by drinks we 120 without loss.

Unfortunately shortly after drinks Paleru got out for 63, which brought Ul Hassan to the wicket who had no luck with his first shot in the air going to being caught in the deep for 4. This saw O’Brien come to the wicket who got his eye in then started to punish the bowling at will, however a loose shot from H Grey getting bowled for 66. Van Wyk and O’Brien put on 93 run partnership before O’Brien in 13 overs with a fantastic display of clean hitting and great running between the wickets turning ones in to two at will.

We had set our opponents a very difficult task to score at more than a run a ball which got all the harder when Cleal and Partridge early wickets, however this had brought the two ringin from our previous match again this team to the wicket and last time they put on over a hundred in quick time. We were not going to give this game away and the boys worked hard in the field the cut the singles while the bowler continued to bowl tight lines building pressure, Humphries took the crucial wicket and Pooley followed shortly after with another. By drinks they were 4 down for 81 leaving them with 198 to get off 23 overs. Knowing we were in the box seat we did not rest on our laurels and kept attacking bring back Cleal who bowled a great line but at times he was just too fast for the batsmen. T Grey & Lim with the assistance of Al Hassan cleaned up the rest of the wickets.

At the end of the day this was probably our best all round performance of the season, we Batted extremely well, our Bowling was great bowling to our field, our ground fielding was terrific the only downside of this performance was that we dropped a couple of catches. This was a great effort by the whole team everyone contributed to the result, I can only hope that we can continue in this vein for the rest of the season.

Elliot Foster Reporting on “Brits Abroad!!”

After months filled with cricket and coaching and after the departure of Joe Kinghorn-Gray back to our native land; myself, Cam and Alex enjoyed a long-earned rest over the Christmas holidays. Between the rest days, of which there were plenty, we did manage to explore what Auckland, and some areas further afield around the north island had to offer. Here is a brief summary of what we got up to, from which I hope you will take at least some amusement.

With fixtures not having finished until the 16th of December, there was little time for us to do much exploring before Christmas. Although this did not stop us venturing out west for a day trip in which we visited Piha to explore the beach and Kitekite falls.

As Christmas drew nearer we were preparing ourselves for our first Christmas away from home. Although we knew that the plethora of food and alcohol would be of some comfort in these testing times! KITEKITE FALLS - ALEX Christmas Eve: we were lucky to have been fantastically hosted by Ian and Donna Trott. The day ENJOYING THE WATER. started with myself driving, with Cameron navigating me to the Trott’s house. All I’ll say is that Cameron’s navigating skills have a lot to be desired with myself shouting at him “to get out and walk!” at one point, but UK relations were soon back to normal after a couple of ‘green ones’! After a great feed, and a mystery illness from Cameron midway through the day (may have been the ten Heinekens before lunch, but I wouldn’t want to speculate), we managed to get ourselves to midnight mass at the Cathedral up at Parnell, at which Alex also seemed to suffer briefly from Cameron’s earlier illness. Both quickly recovered after hearing a belting rendition of ‘Hark the Herald’ from myself and that is where the night ended. Thank you very much again Ian and Donna for having us, we very much enjoyed the day!

After only arriving home from midnight mass at 3am we unfortunately had to cancel the planned Christmas day service on the other side of the shore with Reverend Haggett, but we soon met up with the Senior Haggitt on Takapuna beach later that morning. We made our way then to Reverend Haggitt’s abode for Christmas day celebrations, of which there was a mass of food and merriness. Thank you very much to the Haggitt family for welcoming us into the family occasion.

After a couple of days of digestion, we made ourselves down to Bryan’s batch in the King’s Country. Unfortunately, our attempts to see the Waitomo Caves’ glow-worms on the journey were hampered by lack of booking. Nevertheless, we arrived on the evening having stopped at a petrol station no fewer than three times. Thanks to Alex for driving.

After being abandoned on the veranda in my sleeping bag by Alex and Cameron on the first night, we thought that it would be a good idea to attempt the Tongariro crossing in nothing but a PCC hoodie and tracksuit bottoms. The -6C weather soon put stop to that as did the look on the face of the tourist information worker as we walked in and asked whether we’d be okay. Not to waste the day, tour guide Bryan soon had Alex driving us all over the King Country, and in a thoroughly enjoyable day we visited the Huka Falls, Lake Taupo and the hot geothermal pools at Tokaanu to name just a few. The next day we

Cam finding joy in something that Cam and Alex at the Tawhai Falls arguably has the same intelligence as Huka Falls, Waikato River, Taupo

explored the views of Kakahi. Bryan took us down to the glacial waters for a swim, ‘unfortunately’ I was too ill to enter the waters, but I was there for moral support as the muscles of Cam and Alex froze as they followed Bryan in, who had no problem with the temperature at all. I think the best way to describe the temperature was the way Cam put it: “My appendage nearly went back inside me”. For anyone interested I have a great video of Bryan drifting down river, being taken away by the current.

Thanks again to Bryan and Jenny for letting us stay and to Bryan in particular for taking time out of his day to show us around, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

After bringing the Near year in watching the Sky City fireworks and a BBQ, once again through the hospitality of Ian and Donna Trott on NYD, we travelled across to Pauanui to stay with Parnell’s very own Rod Smith and family. We visited the Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove, as well as being taught to surf by Rod, while we returned the favour and taught him how to play golf! Unfortunately, our trip was cut short by the coming storms, and we decided to return back to Auckland a day earlier than expected to make sure we could play in the first fixture back after the break. Thank you Rod and Marge for allowing us to stay and for a most enjoyable couple of days!

The view on the way to Cathedral Cove

I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Parnell on behalf of myself, Cam and Alex, for what has been a great 4 months so far. Great thanks must go to Phil Horne, Bryan Haggitt and Ian Trott without which our stay would have not been the experience it has been. Also, myself and the boys would like to wish Ian the greatest luck in his newest venture at Auckland Grammar, we hope to stay in touch once our adventure is over.

Elliot Foster.
