Saturday, 22 December from 11am PARNELL vs ELLERSLIE at Cornwall Park 2. ELLERSLIE 81/10 (19) A Burton 31 (45), Keegan Russell 2/21 (4), Ollie Pringle 2/14 (3), Josh Fisher 4/18 (4), Aniket Parikh 2/14 (4) PARNELL 83/3 (19) Aniket Parikh 31 (26) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7 WICKETS Round 5. Saturday 22 December from 3pm PARNELL vs PAPATOETOE at Cornwall Park 2. PAPATOETOE 99/10 (18.3) Ollie Pringle 2/21 (3), Josh Fisher 2/10 (4), Aniket Parikh 2/7 (2), Razin Bharde 1/12 (2) PARNELL 100/2 (13.1) Jesse Simpson 22* (32), Andy Lane 51 (33) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 8 WICKETS After the disappointment of the abandoned game last Thursday, it was beautifully fine at Cornwall. Idyllic setting, and notable for Will Somerville’s Parnell debut. And whilst Will bowled well in both games he didn’t pick up a wicket in either. Didn’t stop our other two offies with Aniket picking up 2/14 and 2/7 and, vs Papatoetoe, Razin took 1/12. The spinners bowled exceptionally well in tandem, totally dominated both opposing teams. Cornwall 2. Is sometimes a difficult ground to adjust to – boundaries straight are short by quite long square. Earlier our pace attack dominated, too - Keegan took his Prem opportunity well capturing the first two Ellerslie wickets, Ollie and Josh followed up strongly. Fielding was exceptional– that Papatotoe lost 3 to run outs speaks for itself. Batting – Jesse played the rock in both whilst Andy really took it to the opposition – 51 off only 33 balls says it all. Aniket, Ollie and Brad all pushed the scoring along –our eventual run rate could be crucial to us qualifying for the Finals. In all, a most successful day. Harry Miller, fresh from skippering Auckland U19s to National victory – here stumping Ellerlie’s pro, Alan Burton, their top scorer Parnell’s 3 offies – Black Cap Will Somerville on debut for the Club, Aniket Parikh and Razin Bharde Three views of Keegan Russell - 1 & 2 as the batsman sees him and an excellent take of a skier in the deep Premier Mens’Grade Jeff Crowe Cup – Limited Overs Championship (50/50) Round 4. Saturday 15 December PARNELL vs BIRKENHEAD at Birkenhead War Memorial Domain 1. BIRKENHEAD 172/10 (47) S Rajwer 62 (88), Henry King 3/32 (10), Ollie Pringle 2/16 (9), Josh Fisher 2/29 (8), PARNELL 173/3 (24) Ben Rae 78 (44), Jesse Simpson 26* (50), Andy Lane 46 (42) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7 WICKETS Henry King, Ollie Pringle and Josh Fisher with Christy O’Brien behind the stumps , deputising for Ben Horne (Aces) & Harry Miller (captaining Auckland U19s) First, Henry, Ollie and Josh broke the back of Birkenhead’s innings having them 6/86 – they recovered somewhat but then ……….. Their 172 was proved utterly inadequate as Ben Rae (1 & 2 above) unleashed a superb range of shots and, whilst Flynn McGregor-Sumpter left early, Jesse Simpson (3) played the rock. And Andy Lane, entering on Ben’s dismissal at 102/2, rattled the runs on most elegantly to just a couple short of victory. Then Skipper Brad finished it off – a most satisfying batting display! ACA Age Group Tournaments – EDCA Win Under 14s, 17s and 18s Flynn Dudson, captain – left front, leads his victorious EDCA U18 Team from the winners’ photo shoot The Tournaments commenced last week amid some controversy over the many changed formats. Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA), comprising players from Auckland University, Grafton United & Parnell CCs, has dominated the Championships to date: FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES Under 14 Dev. T20 Under 16 – 40 Overs Under 17 – 40 Overs Under 18 – 40 overs 1. Eastern Western Eastern Eastern 2. North Harbour Burgundy North Harbour Manukau Western 3. North Harbour Gold Cornwall/Ellerslie Western Cornwall/Ellerslie 4. Western Eastern North Harbour North Harbour 5. Manukau Cornwall/Ellerslie Manukau U17s: Parnell U17 players selected for the ACA Trial on Friday 21 December are Nathan Robinson, Nikith Perera & Dinesh Kharel U14s - aspects of concern were: 1. 9 players only per team 2. Short, 45m boundaries 3. T20 format not popular/prefer 40+ overs Considered just “backyard cricket” – previously considered a top level Tournament these reductions were perceived as reducing the status/worth of the competition. Note that only 4 teams took part – neither Cornwall/Ellerslie nor Manukau fronted and, as the results show, the playing standard was, apart from Eastern, weak. Note that these T20s were for Development teams. The A Teams compete, again in T20s, in mid January. Metro Park, Millwater, Hibiscus Coast – a huge park, bleak and treeless. Fortunately only a zephyr was blowing yesterday (despite that, chairs were being blown away) – wouldn’t want to be there if a breeze came up. Thought that Councils were past “designing” blasted heaths – easy to mow but totally lacking in character. The games – note the results and the win margins: Round 1. EDCA 206/7 (20) beat Western 38 (11) by 168 runs 2. EDCA 197/7 (20) beat Nth Harbour Gold 84 (12) by 113 runs 3. EDCA 158/7 (20) beat Nth Harbour Burgundy 57 (10) by 101 runs 4. • How the Aussies Cooked Our Kiwi
JT col Jan 4 2020 – cricket disaster How the Aussies cooked our kiwi There can’t be many Kiwis who now believe our cricket team should have been able to hop the Tasman and without proper preparation knock off the full-strength Aussies in their own parched land. There’s several reasons. The obvious one was we didn’t take a proffered chance to train for the savage weather and pitch conditions. As one of the commentators said, the Black Caps looked under-done in experience on the Aussie wickets and playing in much higher temperatures than at home. Acclimatising has always been a problem for cricket teams when they travel, but some small consolation is usually provided by a warm-up match before getting down to business. Not in this case. The Kiwis opted to throw themselves straight into the furnace of Perth and were duly cooked. Only bowler (and second-best Kiwi batsmen in the woeful first innings at Melbourne) Neil Wagner seemed unaffected. By the time they long-hauled back from Perth to the MCG for the much-touted Boxing Day test, the Black Caps were mentally exhausted…apart from Wagner, and Tom Blundell, who didn’t play in Perth. An underlying problem, though, is the world cricket rankings, which had New Zealand at number two and Aussie at five. It’s obvious from its TV commentators what Australia thought of that, although while Ian Smith was in the commentary box they were polite. Former England captain Michael Vaughan said it for them, calling the rankings rubbish, with Australia too low and New Zealand and England too high for credibility.

THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. First published in 2014 by the East India Club.
