Round 4. Saturday, 22 December from 11am PARNELL vs ELLERSLIE at Cornwall Park 2. ELLERSLIE 81/10 (19) A Burton 31 (45), Keegan Russell 2/21 (4), Ollie Pringle 2/14 (3), Josh Fisher 4/18 (4), Aniket Parikh 2/14 (4) PARNELL 83/3 (19) Aniket Parikh 31 (26) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7

Round 5. Saturday 22 December from 3pm PARNELL vs PAPATOETOE at Cornwall Park 2. PAPATOETOE 99/10 (18.3) Ollie Pringle 2/21 (3), Josh Fisher 2/10 (4), Aniket Parikh 2/7 (2), Razin Bharde 1/12 (2) PARNELL 100/2 (13.1) Jesse Simpson 22* (32), Andy Lane 51 (33) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 8 WICKETS After the disappointment of the abandoned game last Thursday, it was beautifully fine at Cornwall. Idyllic setting, and notable for Will Somerville’s Parnell debut. And whilst Will bowled well in both games he didn’t pick up a in either. Didn’t stop our other two offies with Aniket picking up 2/14 and 2/7 and, vs Papatoetoe, Razin took 1/12. The spinners bowled exceptionally well in tandem, totally dominated both opposing teams. Cornwall 2. Is sometimes a difficult ground to adjust to – boundaries straight are short by quite long square. Earlier our pace attack dominated, too - Keegan took his Prem opportunity well capturing the first two Ellerslie wickets, Ollie and Josh followed up strongly. Fielding was exceptional– that Papatotoe lost 3 to run outs speaks for itself. – Jesse played the rock in both whilst Andy really took it to the opposition – 51 off only 33 balls says it all. Aniket, Ollie and Brad all pushed the scoring along –our eventual run rate could be crucial to us qualifying for the Finals. In all, a most successful day.

Harry Miller, fresh from skippering Auckland U19s to National victory – here stumping Ellerlie’s pro, Alan Burton, their top scorer

Parnell’s 3 offies – Black Cap Will Somerville on debut for the Club, Aniket Parikh and Razin Bharde

Three views of Keegan Russell - 1 & 2 as the batsman sees him and an excellent take of a skier in the deep

Premier Mens’Grade Jeff Crowe Cup – Limited Overs Championship (50/50)

Round 4. Saturday 15 December PARNELL vs BIRKENHEAD at Birkenhead War Memorial Domain 1. BIRKENHEAD 172/10 (47) S Rajwer 62 (88), Henry King 3/32 (10), Ollie Pringle 2/16 (9), Josh Fisher 2/29 (8), PARNELL 173/3 (24) Ben Rae 78 (44), Jesse Simpson 26* (50), Andy Lane 46 (42) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 7 WICKETS

Henry King, Ollie Pringle and Josh Fisher with Christy O’Brien behind the stumps , deputising for Ben Horne (Aces) & Harry Miller (captaining Auckland U19s)

First, Henry, Ollie and Josh broke the back of Birkenhead’s innings having them 6/86 – they recovered somewhat but then ………..

Their 172 was proved utterly inadequate as Ben Rae (1 & 2 above) unleashed a superb range of shots and, whilst Flynn McGregor-Sumpter left early, Jesse Simpson (3) played the rock. And Andy Lane, entering on Ben’s dismissal at 102/2, rattled the runs on most elegantly to just a couple short of victory. Then Skipper Brad finished it off – a most satisfying batting display!

ACA Age Group Tournaments – EDCA Win Under 14s, 17s and 18s

Flynn Dudson, – left front, leads his victorious EDCA U18 Team from the winners’ photo shoot The Tournaments commenced last week amid some controversy the many changed formats. Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA), comprising players from Auckland University, Grafton United & Parnell CCs, has dominated the Championships to date: FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES Under 14 Dev. T20 Under 16 – 40 Overs Under 17 – 40 Overs Under 18 – 40 overs 1. Eastern Western Eastern Eastern 2. North Harbour Burgundy North Harbour Manukau Western 3. North Harbour Gold Cornwall/Ellerslie Western Cornwall/Ellerslie 4. Western Eastern North Harbour North Harbour 5. Manukau Cornwall/Ellerslie Manukau U17s: Parnell U17 players selected for the ACA Trial on Friday 21 December are Nathan Robinson, Nikith Perera & Dinesh Kharel

U14s - aspects of concern were: 1. 9 players only per team 2. Short, 45m boundaries 3. T20 format not popular/prefer 40+ overs Considered just “backyard cricket” – previously considered a top level Tournament these reductions were perceived as reducing the status/worth of the competition. Note that only 4 teams took part – neither Cornwall/Ellerslie nor Manukau fronted and, as the results show, the playing standard was, apart from Eastern, weak. Note that these T20s were for Development teams. The A Teams compete, again in T20s, in mid January. Metro Park, Millwater, Hibiscus Coast – a huge park, bleak and treeless. Fortunately only a zephyr was blowing yesterday (despite that, chairs were being blown away) – wouldn’t want to be there if a breeze came up. Thought that Councils were past “designing” blasted heaths – easy to mow but totally lacking in character. The games – note the results and the win margins: Round 1. EDCA 206/7 (20) beat Western 38 (11) by 168 runs 2. EDCA 197/7 (20) beat Nth Harbour Gold 84 (12) by 113 runs 3. EDCA 158/7 (20) beat Nth Harbour Burgundy 57 (10) by 101 runs 4. Final Nth Harbour B’dy 101 (15.4) lost to EDCA 102/0 (9.5) by 8 (max) wickets

Premier Women’s Grade – Pearl Dawson Trophy (T20 Championship)

15 December Rounds 1. & 2.. at Shore Road Reserve 1. Round 1. PARNELL 36/10 (18.3) Emma Irwin 18* (49), Roz McNeill 4/2 (8), Claire Mains 3/6 (4) TAKAPUNA 37/1 (10.2) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 9 WICKETS

Round 2. PARNELL 72/7 (20) Emma Irwin 21 (23), A Bowden 3/6 (4) HOWICK PAKURANGA 73/1 (14) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 9 WICKETS Coming off successive wins, it was disappointing that Parnell had these two reverses. But our girls were up against top opposition strengthened by Hearts players being available and our Yasmin Kareem away with Auckland U21s. What was notable was the batting of 15 year old Emma Irwin who showed real stickability against Takapuna and, then, rattled up a quick 21 against Howick Pakuranga.

Saturday, 15 December Round 4. PARNELL vs EAST COAST BAYS at Windsor Park 1. PARNELL 66/10 (25.5) Sam Klippel 22 (47), D Smith 5/15 (3) EAST COAST BAYS 67/2 (18) Razin Bharde 2/19 (6) RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 8 WICKETS Words must have failed the Vicar as no report has come to hand but, obviously, the lads were, already, away with the fairies!

Saturday, 15 December Round 7. PARNELL vs CORNWALL at Shore Road 2a. PARNELL 142/1 (20) E Farrell 72 (53), Kate Irwin 58* (59) CORNWALL 67/8 (19.2) Ella Drumm 2/14 (3), A Smith 2/4 (3) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 75 RUNS A resounding win thanks to a truly magnificent opening partnership, broken only by a runout. Then great work with the ball which puts Parnell at the top of the Points Table.

Men’s Senior Grades – Limited Over Champs.

THIRDS – 4th Grade: 15 December Round 3. PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Hobsonville Domain PARNELL 218/10 (42) Sajith Dhambagolla 30, Luke O’Toole 48, Elliot Jaffe 34 TAKAPUNA 62/10 (18.3) Nikith Perera 5/?. Pete Hickman 4/?, Elliot Jaffe 1/? RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 156 RUNS St Kentigern 1st XI (and EDCA) provided us with two players for this game – Sajith and Nikith. Sajith, fresh from topping the ACA U18 batting aggregates and averages, opened and scored a most useful 30 on his PCC debut. Good to see Luke in good form and we were further aided by a tail that wagged. The bowlers then did the rest. Nikith obviously found the track to his liking by taking 5 cheap wickets with his left arm spin and Pete, with pace, took us to a very early finish.

FOURTHS – 7th Grade – 15 December Round 5. PARNELL vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Walker Park 4 CANCELLED BY ACA IN EXPECTATION OF BAD WEATHER [Which, in fact, didn’t eventuate – most of Saturday was beautifully fine, see Report below from the Parnell King’s who did play out West – very disappointing indeed for a very keen Parnell team- Ed.]

Men’s One Day Grades ONE DAY 1A GRADE – PARNELL KINGS 15 December Round 9 PARNELL KINGS vs WAITAKERE at Whenuapai Air Base 1a. PARNELL 236/9 (40) Mani 57, Chak 50, Vignesh 35 WAITAKERE 153/3 (18.3 of 20 - Duckworth Lewis adjm’t) Aaron 2/33, Karthik 1/13 RESULT: PARNELL LOST TO WAITAKERE BY 7 WICKETS (D/L Adjusted) CHAK REPORTING:On a beautiful sunny day, Parnell Kings traveled to Whenuapai Air base to play Waitakere Air force. With regular captain Abrar missing this game, Chak took over and won the toss and elected to bat first. Chak and Mani opened the batting on a very hot day.

They started cautiously and settled in the crease putting the bad balls away and negating the good ones. They batted brilliantly together rotating the strike and looked very solid in the middle. Once settled in Mani played some brilliant shots clearing the big boundaries while Chak quietly taking the ones and giving the strike back to Mani, who quickly reached his fifty. At the end of the drinks break Kings did not lose a wicket at all, which is a first for the team. But soon after, trying to up the ante Mani got out, and Arul followed suite. And Chak was out soon, falling to a brilliantly set up plan from the opposition. Karthik and Roopesh stitched a good little partnership increasing the run rate before being dismissed. Then came Roy and Vignesh towards the end. Vignesh muscled a few sixes which were humongous. Roy with his elegant stroke play getting boundaries with ease, but it was Vignesh with his power hitting took the team home at the end of 40 overs to 236 for the loss of 9 wickets. As soon as the innings finished, rain interfered and crucial time was lost. The rain stopped but umpires decided to play it safe as the outfield was still wet and more time was lost. But the sun was out and with DLS playing its part Waitakere had to play 20 overs and needed 151 runs to win. The intent was very clear as the game changed its head and the Waitakere batsmen were in T20 mode right from the get go, though they lost a wicket in the first over, the intent didn't change and were clearing the boundaries with ease and by 10 overs, had scored 90 runs. Vignesh and Pavan bowled well to pull it back a bit, but the damage had been done and they managed to chase the total down with 9 balls to spare.

Chak, when reporting on the above game vs Waitakere, added this postscript: “Our Black Caps are doing great in the first test, what an innings from and also the brilliant Kane and back to his best. I think Southee and Boult are the best new ball bowlers in tests at the moment. Anyway please see our match report against Waitakere Airforce, the last game of this year.” And, alas, your Editor has had to add what magnificent batting from Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews to bat all the 4th day, and beyond, till rain came and prematurely ended the Test. Another DRAW but what a DRAW! Ed.

Presidents’ Grade 15 December Round 7. PARNELL vs SRI LANKA LEGENDS at Riversdale Reserve PARNELL 178/8 (35) SRI LANKA LEGENDS 127/10 (31) RESULT: CAVALIERS WON BY 3 WICKETS SKIPPER CHRIS LAYCOCK REPORTING As promised last week here’s a little something from the good news department... As a result of last weeks injuries we were a little thin on the ground leading up to our match against Sri Lanka Legends at Riversdale Reserve. Having lost to SLL in recent encounters and fielding a somewhat untried lineup I dutifully lost the toss and we were put in to bat. A cautious start saw us 72/2 at drinks, Rod Smith contributing a solid 24/27. Sam O’Malley upped the tempo after drinks mustering up an aggressive 32/21 and I struggled through to an injury hampered 52/85. We scored 106 runs after drinks finishing the innings on 178/8. Without the luxury of our quicks in the line up and a hamstrung Rudi only able to bowl sketchy off spin at practice our medium pacers needed to dig deep to contain the aggressive SLL top order. Gormo 2-19-7 and Greg 2-30-7 had us in a good position at drinks with SLL 85/5. Rudi took the ball soon after drinks and his wonky off spin morphed into tentative medium pace which soon became unplayable off only a few paces. It was more than the SLL bowlers could cope with. Rudi put an abrupt end to the SSL innings at 127 inside 31 overs with figures of 4/4/5.1 It was a solid bowling and fielding performance once again led by John behind the stumps conceding no byes. Nice way to rekindle our bid to finish the playoff rounds in the top 4.

Players Sports’ Annual Cricket Max Tournament

Last Thursday and Friday a great many youngsters enrolled for and took part in this Tournament.

Unfortunately the weather was most unkind and all play on Thursday was confined to the Terry Jarvis Centre - yet again, thank goodness for the TJC!!!

Friday – thankfully, the rain that threatened all day, held off and a full day’s play was possible. Huge enthusiasm demonstrated by the players of all teams and their Senior Schoolboy coaches/Team Leaders and the Tournament was, as always, a fantastic success.

Congratulations to Manager Steve Hurdley for his most efficient organisation, running of the BBQ etc and to his team of Coaches/Leaders - Max Dudson, Sam White, Jack Wright, Matthew Presland, Daniel Presland, Lucas Osborne, Cole Osborne, Nicholas Holden and Harry Sinclair. Last Minute Christmas Shopping Don’t forget Players Sports for Bats, Pads, Balls, Helmet and all Cricket Equipment PERFECT FOR GIFTS!!

NOTE that Parnell Premier’s opening bat, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter is now working at Players Sports – look in and let him help choose some gear! Flynn, formerly Auckland Grammar’s 1st XI captain and Auckland Under 19 rep., is in good form this season for Parnell – top score 84.

Test Cricket & Quiz

I wasn’t going to have a Quiz this issue because there will be no Update for some weeks whilst I am down country. However , yesterday, Ewen Groves (once of - his father Les, a leggie before Alex Moir, took 31 wickets for Otago) posed me a question which was:

QUESTION: “What was the most famous ball ever bowled in cricket?”

I gave him my answer which coincided with his belief. However, the question is subjective and I then posed it to Alan Graham, now of the Karori CC. His answer was different and that ball that he had in mind was notably significant in the annals of the game.

SO, OVER THE BREAK, GIVE SOME THOUGHT TO THIS AND GET BACK TO ME BY EMAIL [email protected]

Being so subjective there will be no absolutely right answer (I already have 2 suggestions) but I believe that YOU could come up with a few very interesting beliefs. Send them to me and they will be listed in the next Update, mid/late January.

Christmas And All That

The UK lads, here for the season are taking the opportunity of this break to see something of the rest of NZ. Jack Marston has his mum, dad and twin brother with him and they are touring the North Island. Jack Crace and his mate Rory have headed to the Coromandel, expected to be in Taupo for Christmas, to camp at Kakahi and then head, via Wellington, to the South Island. Hugh Teesdale is hoping to do some camping round the North Island with his North Middlesex CC mate whilst the Essenhigh family are planning to have Christmas Dinner on Takapuna Beach, watching some tennis and cricket and touring just a little later. And Zac would love a game of cricket if there is one going! Meantime, a few memories of some of those cricketers who have played and holidayed here in past years:

Piha – Frosty took to the waters Lake Taupo – Rob found Holes in One elusive

Taupo Bungy Simon – “Hi Mum, guess what !”

The bach, Kakahi – early morning Mt Ruapehu and Pete, who is now back in NZ & has Johanna with him

Golf at the bach – Pete & Simon driving. Task is to clear the river

Test on the lawn – Ian, Joe, Guy & Fran Whakapapa River & a submerged Guy –unlike some at a later date!

Tawhai Falls, Mt Ruapehu – Conradie twins & friend Henk on the braai

Hayden & Lalit at the Club. Both, with Guy Harper, now teammates at Ashtead CC, Surrey

Tokaanu Geothermal Springs - Cameron, Alex & Elliot Alex & Cam at Tauwharanui Beach

And So Endeth the First Half of the 2018/19 Season Wishing You All A Very Merry Christmas and Tons of Runs and Wickets in the New Year!
