Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.183: A Super Weekend! A SUPER WEEKEND in more ways than one: SATURDAY • Our Men’s Prems recovered from 105/6 to head Takapuna’s 236 for 1st innings points and consolidated their position at the top of the Hedley Howarth Trophy Table • Giacomo Lamplough hit 189 for our Men’s Premier Reserves vs North Shore, His innings included 12 sixes and 20 fours. With Keegan Russell (58*) putting on 134, a new Club All Time Lower Grade Record, for the 8th wicket! • Our Premier Women, vs Table Leader Takapuna, scored 216/4 in their 50 overs (Yaz Kareem 83), had North Shore 198/9 only to lose by 1 wicket • Ford Trophy Final at Eden Park: Auckland Aces beat Otago Volts by 2 wickets. Colin Munro hit a 100 but it was our Mark Chapman who, in scoring 84*, nursed the middle and lower order home. More Parnell support from Lockie Ferguson 2/50 (and, sadly, causing Hamish Rutherford to retire hurt) and Ben Horne (catch and stumping, no byes) and 42. SUNDAY • SUPER OVER needed to decide the Jeff Crowe Cup Semi Final: Parnell vs Takapuna and, unlike the Black Caps in all their efforts, Parnell came out the victor. Very much due to the heroic efforts with bat and ball from Ollie Pringle! And not forgetting our ‘keeper, Harry Miller who took 6 catches in Takapuna’s first 20 overs. WONDERFUL TWO DAYS’ CRICKET, FULLER DETAILS OVERLEAF WONDERFUL, TOO, THAT SO MANY PLAYERS AND SUPPORTERS FROM THE PAST CAME TO SHORE ROAD TO SEE SOME QUITE STARTING AND NERVE TINGLING CRICKET. JUST A SHAME THAT THE JEFF CROWE SEMI FINAL CLASHED WITH THE FORD TROPHY FINAL – WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT TO HAVE SEEN BOTH GAMES! After the Jeff Crowe Semi Final – “the Stayers” in the Rose Garden Premier Men’s Grade Saturdays, 8 & 15 February – Hedley Howarth Trophy (Major 2 Day Championship),Round 5 PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Shore Road Reserve 1. TAKAPUNA 236/10 (82.4) W O’Donnell 90 (161), D James 54 (132), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 2/39 (13) Ollie Pringle 2/35 (16), Fanie de Villiers 3/43 (15), Josh Fisher 0/65 (15), Nikith Perera 2/32 (14), Aniket Parikh 1/22 (9) PARNELL 242/7 (100) Ben Rae 36 (54), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 29 (93),Aniket Parikh 77* (178), Fanie de Villiers 37 (60), Harry Miller 28* (92) M Jones 39o 14m 65r 4w W O’Donnell 38 14 80 1 RESULT Match Drawn, 1st innings points to Parnell Parnell, 71 points, leads from Cornwall, 58, and Takapuna 57. DAY 1. PHOTOS: Our pace attack – Ganesh, Ollie and Fanie Nikith – flights one up with Coach and Chairman watching approvingly. Happy birthday Nikith – 18 this week! DAY 2. Chasing Takapuna’ 236, we were 55/1 commencing Day 2. with Ben Rainger and Flynn at the crease. But, at 61, Ben was run out and from there, with the spinners on and getting some turn, we went into our shells. Singles weren’t come either – Jones, left arm, and O’Donnell, offies, wove a spell. First Flynn was lbw, Brad allowed one “through the gate” and, after facing 79 balls, Ollie was caught off Jones for 9 – 94/5! Worse, Josh, who was looking positive was runout – 105/6 – utter disaster. Lunch – Fanie had joined Aniket and, the former in particular, took the bowling by the scruff of the neck. Fanie hit 3 sixes but was adjuged caught at 170. Still 67 needed for the lead when Harry Miller went to the wicket but he played the perfect support role to Aniket who masterfully took us through to 242 without further loss and ist innings points. A very different role for Aniket but his patient 77* off 178 balls was a superb innings under immense pressure. With the scores closing, tea was delayed until we took the lead and, at the break, the captains agreed that there was no further point in continuing and the match ended in a draw. An excellent contest and a great recovery by our middle and lower order batsmen. Great preparation for the Jeff Crowe Semi Final the next day! In the doldrums at 105/6, Aniket (77*), with, first, Fanie (37) and then Harry (28*) saved the day and won us 1st innings points Aniket Parikh and Harry Miller An unbroken match saving partnership of 72 taking us from 170/7, when Fanie was dismissed, to 242/7 and a 1st innings lead. HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY (Two Day Major Championship): Points thus earned consolidate our position at the top of the Table: Parnell 79 Cornwall 58 Takapuna 57 Auckland University 50 North Shore 45 Papatoetoe 37 Suburbs NL 35 Howick Pakuranga 35. Parnell plays Auckland University 22 and 29 February and Papatoetoe 7 and 14 March Final game, 21 and 28 March to be confirmed. Sunday, 16 February – Jeff Crowe Cup (Limited Overs Championship) Semi Final PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA at Shore Road Reserve 1. TAKAPUNA 239/10 (48.1) M O’Dowd 42 (51), W O’Donnell 40 (43), M Sclanders 49 (51), Q Sunde 36 (45), Ollie Pringle 25/1 (5), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 2/58 (8), Nikith Perera 2/42 (10), Fanie de Villiers 3/37 (8), Josh Fisher 1/44 (6), Aniket Parikh 1/33 (10) PARNELL 239/7 (50) Ben Rae 77 (117), Jack Parsons 39 (55), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 42 (65), M Jones 0/23 (10), M Sclanders 1/39 (9), R ter Braak 4/55 (9), W O’Donnell 1/31 (10) RESULT: TIE – Proceeding to SUPER OVER – see details below O’Dowd and O’Donnell, the experienced and inform pair (they put on 346 for the 1st wicket vs AUCC in the Prelim Semi Final) started strongly. They weathered our opening attack and had 75 up before 2nd change, Fanie had O’Donnell caught behind and, 6 runs later, had Becroft caught. Josh came on and Harry had his 2nd catch – O’Dowd, 90/3. Sclanders teamed with Sunde, back from the U19 CWC, until, at 157, the latter was caught and bowled by Nikith – a very smart catch. From there wickets fell – 164/5, 170/6 and van Vuuren and James gone, both caught behind by Harry off Fanie and Nikith. Ganesh came back to remove Sclanders and, at 212, snaffled ter Braak. Aniket bowled Harley at the same total but the last wicket wagged until Ollie returned to have Quinn give Harry his 6th catch. 240 to win! Ben Rae, and especialy Jack Parsons, gave us a rattling good start till he was lbw at 76. Ben continued to play the rock and Flynn maintained his form till, at 151, he was caught behind. Ollie then dug himself in and all went well till Ben’s patient knock was ended by Sclanders – 180/3. Parnell continued in cruise mode till – and, at this point your Editor (at the time, miles away at the Clubroom, peering with his impaired vision between Chairman Craig and Tom Bassett’s akubra) hands over to the most pertinent observer (and recorder)of all OUR SCORER – COME IN JOCELYN GOODGER: After 47 overs we were214/3. 26 required to win, from 18 balls. Over 48: Ross ter Braak bowling to Ollie, Brad at the other end. A bye. Brad hit a 2 then a single. Ollie facing - a dot then a big 6. Last ball: Ollie out, caught by Dan James. New batsman: Aniket. To win: 16 required from 12 Ryan Quinn bowling to Aniket. A single. Brad: 4, dot, 1 Aniket: dot, 1. 9 required to win, 6 balls. Ross ter Braak, bowling to Aniket..... A two, then a four. 3 to win, from 4 balls. Ross bowled a wide! 2 to win, from 4. Next ball hits Aniket - an appeal (of course!!!!!!). Given. Aniket LBW 2 to win, from 3. Next ball hits Josh - an appeal (of course!!!!!!). Given. Josh LBW New batsman: Fanie Ross is on a hat-trick 2 runs needed from 2 balls. The next ball was confusion all round. Fanie hit it, they ran, Matt Jones fired at the stumps at the bowlers end and ‘someone’ was run out. Fanie walks off. But hang on - the Takapuna boys are saying that Brad and Fanie hadn’t crossed so Brad should be out. Umpires discuss it with Takapuna, then between themselves. Scorers are waiting for someone to make a decision so the wicket can be entered into the app. Everyone else is holding their collective breath whilst at the same time trying to work out who should be out. Where is the tv replay when you need it! Eventually it is ‘decided’ that they hadn’t crossed and so Brad is out. Brad leaves the field and Fanie goes back on to face the last ball. 2 runs required to win. They managed to run 1. Tie!! 10 MINUTE BREAK THEN SUPER OVERS. The umpires consult the Playing Conditions so they cannot be accused of getting things wrong. Takapuna decide Ross ter Braak will bowl, Parnell send in Ben Rae and Ollie Pringle, Ben facing first ball. Ball 1: 2 runs Next delivery: a wide! Ben is out next ball (& unfortunately the scorer just recorded a fallen wicket in her hand-written notes, not how it fell. That info is in the CricHQ notes, but they can only be retrieved by CricHQ). However I think it was a catch taken while Ben and Ollie were running. New batsman: Aniket, goes to non-striker end. Next delivery: another wide!! 3rd ball: 4 runs to Ollie 4th ball: 2 runs 5th ball: wicket! Ollie is caught by Will O’Donnell, way out on the boundary.
