  • 8. Pozza Kervan 24 1
Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 24/1 (2020) Playing with Words and Rhythms in Khālī jagah: Translating a Hindi Novel and its Texture into French Nicola Pozza The novel Khālī jagah (2006) by the Hindi writer Geetanjali Shree mainly focuses on the topics of violence, loss, and quest for identity in the contemporary world. In this text – and in others too, but maybe here more than elsewhere – the author makes use of a very hybrid and idiomatic Hindi. Moreover, she repeatedly plays with iterations and alliterations, assonances and consonances, onomatopoeias and neologisms, and creates a particular syntax that might be described as dismembered, dislocated, and breathless. To these elements must also be added the inclusion of excerpts from folk songs as well as the essential role played by silences and unsaid things. If all these features are to be taken into account when translating such a narrative – as its content is tightly coupled to its form – it makes for a highly complex and challenging task. After providing a very brief summary of Khālī jagah, I will first highlight a few rhythmic and translation related issues, before analysing in detail some excerpts from the novel, in order to explain the choices I have made for its French translation (Une place vide, Infolio, 2018) and compare some of the results with an English translation primarily focused on the content (The Empty Space, Harper Perennial, 2011). 1. Introduction and presentation of the novel The novel Khālī jagah (2006) by the Hindi writer Geetanjali Shree1 mainly focuses on the topics of violence, loss, and quest for identity in the contemporary world.

  • Television Soap Operas for Development in India1
109- Television soap operas for development in India1 ARVIND SINGHAL & EVERETT M. ROGERS Annenberg School of Communications, University of Southern California, University Park, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0281, USA Introduction We analyze India’s experience with ’Hum Log’, the first indigenous soap opera on Doordarshan, the government national television network in India. This television series was patterned after previ- ous experiences with soap operas for development in Mexico. ’Hum Log’ was immensely popular with both its audience and its advertisers during the 17 months of its broadcast in 1984-85. ’Hum Log’s’ very high ratings (up to 90 in North India) contrib- uted to ( 1 ) a proliferation of domestically-produced television serials on Indian television, (2) increased commercialization of the Indian television industry, and (3) a shift of talent from the Bombay movie industry into television production. Prospects for pro-development television soap operas in other Third World countries, drawing on the Indian experience, seem promising. During the 1980s, television audiences have expanded tremen- dously in such Third World nations as Mexico, Brazil, the People’s Republic of China (Rogers and others, 1985), and India. For the first time, television broadcasting is reaching a sizeable audience in Third World countries: For example, approximately half of China’s 1 billion population, and 80 million of India’s 800 mil- lion people. These millions of new television viewers offer a huge potential audience for development communication messages. However, most television programming which is broadcast in the Third World consists of entertainment, including imported reruns from the United States like ’I love Lucy’, ’Kojak’, and ’Dallas’.

WOMEN WHO DARED Edited by Ritu Menon (Published by the National Book Trust, New Delhi India, Price Rs 75 only) Ammanige (To My Mother) SA USHA Mother, don’t, please don’t Don’t cut off the sunlight With your sari spread across the sky Blanching life’s green leaves Don’t say: you’re seventeen already Don’t flash your sari in the street Don’t make eyes at passers-by Don’t be a tomboy riding the winds Don’t play that tune again That your mother, Her mother and her mother Had played on the snake-charmer’s flute Into the ears of nitwits like me I am just spreading my hood I’ll sink my fangs into someone And leave my venom. Let go, make way. Circumambulating the holy plant In the yard, making rangoli designs To see heaven, turning up dead Without light and air. For God’s sake, I can’t do it. Breaking out of the dam You’ve built, swelling In a thunderstorm Roaring through the land, Let me live very differently From you, mother. Let go, make way. (Tr. A. K. Ramanujan) Introduction For at least a century and a half now, the presence of women in the social and public life of India has been noted, even if they have only been intermittently and sporadically visible, and insufficiently acknowledged. Most people, when asked, will recall women’s participation in the freedom struggle, their mobilisation by the thousands in Gandhiji’s campaigns against the British, in the salt satyagraha, and in the civil disobedience and non-cooperation movements.
