The political changes which occurred in the former Soviet Union in the last part of the 1980s resulted in the opening of this area to foreigners. Director Gennady Matishov of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute deserves much of the credit for this. In 1990 an international cooperation was established between the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI); the Arctic Ecology Group of the Institute of Oceanology, Gdansk; and the Norwegian Polar Research Institute, Oslo. The purpose of this cooperation is to develope scientific cooperation in the Arctic thorugh joint expeditions, the establishment of a high Arctic scientific station, and the exchange of scientific information. So far the results of this cooperation are two scientific cruises with the RV "Pomor", a vessel belonging to the MMBI. The cruises have been named Sov Nor-Poll and Sov-Nor-Po12. A third cruise is planned for August-September 1992. In addition the MMBI has undertaken to establish a scientific station at Tikhaia Bay on Hooker Island. This is the site of a former Soviet meteorological base from 1929-1958, and some of the buildings are now being restored by MMBI. -

Salmon rivers of this area have been affected by significant fishing pressure for a long time, and, undoubtedly, these data are of great importance for assessment of optimum abundance of spawners, necessary for spawning grounds, for estimating the exploitation rate of the stock, the optimum abundance of released farmed juveniles and for other calculations. At the same time, despite the numerous papers, the problem of the stock status of salmon from the Kola River was discussed'long aga (Azbelev, 1960), but there are no data on the reproductive potential of this river in literature. This study provides a comprehensive characterization of the chemical composition of 15 Arctic red algal species from the perspective of their practical relevance in medicine and the food industry. We show that several virtually unstudied species may be regarded as promis- ing sources of different valuable metabolites and minerals. Duarte Committee Members: Prof. Mark Tester, Prof. Takashi Gojobori, and Prof. Hugo de Boer [External] 3 © November, 2019 Alejandra Ortega All Rights Reserved 4 ABSTRACT Fingerprinting Marine Macrophytes in Blue Carbon Habitats Alejandra Ortega Seagrass, mangrove, saltmarshes and macroalgae - the coastal vegetated habitats, offer a promising nature-based solution to climate change mitigation, as they sequester carbon in their living biomass and in marine sediments. Estimation of the macrophyte organic carbon contribution to coastal sediments is key for understanding the sources of blue carbon sequestration, and for establishing adequate conservation strategies. Nevertheless, identification of marine macrophytes has been challenging and current estimations are uncertain. In this dissertation, time- and cost-efficient DNA-based methods were used to fingerprint marine macrophytes and estimate their contribution to the organic pool accumulated in blue carbon habitats. First, a suitable short-length DNA barcode from the universal 18S gene was chosen among six barcoding regions tested, as it successfully recovered degraded DNA from sediment samples and fingerprinted marine macrophyte taxa. Second, an experiment was performed to test whether the abundance of eDNA represents the content of organic carbon within the macrophytes; results supported this notion, indicating a positive correlation (R2 = 0.85) between eDNA and organic carbon. -

Silva Festschrift Marine Algal (Seaweed) Collections at the Natural History Museum, London (BM): Past, Present and Future Ian Tittley Department of Botany, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD ABSTRACT The specimen collections and libraries of the Natural History Museum (BM) constitute an important reference centre for macro marine algae (brown, green and red generally known as seaweeds). The first collections of algae were made in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and are among the earliest collections in the museum from Britain and abroad. Many collectors have contributed directly or indirectly to the development and growth of the seaweed collection and these are listed in an appendix to this paper. The taxonomic and geographical range of the collection is broad and a significant amount of information is associated with it. As access to this information is not always straightforward, a start has been made to improve this through specimen databases and image collections. A collection review has improved the availability of geographical information; lists of countries for a given species and lists of species for a given country will soon be available, while for Great Britain and Ireland geographical data from specimens have been collated to create species distribution maps. This paper considers issues affecting future development of the seaweed collection at the Natural History Museum, the importance and potential of the UK collection as a resource of national biodiversity information, and participation in a global network of collections. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract An ongoing phycological survey in the Laje de Santos Marine State Park (LSMSP) of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil revealed a previously undescribed species of Osmundea (Rhodophyta, Rhodomelaceae), which was found in the subtidal zone at a depth of 7 to 20 m. Morphological studies conducted on Osmundea specimens collected in the LSMSP revealed characteristics typical of the genus Osmundea, including two pericentral cells per each axial segment and tetrasporangia cut off randomly from cortical cells. -

ISABEL MENESES 2 ABSTRACT: Ceramium is widely distributed and recorded from the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean. Thus, it is not surprising to find new species and new records of this genus among the numerous islands spread in this oceanic region. Extensive examination ofmaterial collected around O'ahu and other Hawaiian Islands has yielded two new records: Ceramium aduncum Nakamura (pre viously known from Japan), Ceramium clarionensis Setchell & Gardner (pre viously recorded for the Pacific coast of Mexico), and a new species, Ceramium cingulum Meneses. APPROXIMATELY 55 SPECIES of the genus Cer the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, appearing in amium (Ceramiaceae) have been reported almost any collection made, mainly as epi for the tropical and subtropical North phytes.
