MKAS210I Tour Description 2020 AnnaHiking Active holidays in Greece www.annahiking.nl Halkidiki – Kassandra – self-guided: 8-day bicycle and walking tour on Kassandra 2020 (MKAS210I) Our hiking philosophy: active during the day, and in the afternoon a warm shower, a good meal and a comfortable bed in a small-scale accommodation. We invite you to join us! more information: www.annahiking.nl (4-4-2020) MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra About AnnaHiking and the Kassandra Guide In 1991 we visited Greece for the first time. Our love for the country, the culture, the climate, the food, the language and the Greek has grown ever since. We feel at home here and want to communicate this feeling to others. Many people are familiar with the Greek “islands with beautiful beaches”. Many islands also boast a splendid inland with historical paths, ideal for hiking and biking. Kassandra on Halkidiki is such an island with much more on offer than beaches alone, and we’d love to introduce it to you. The local association published the website Kassandra Guide. The chairman called upon AnnaHiking to promote the island for its hiking and biking opportunities. As these are plentiful, we gladly obliged! In cooperation with the people from Kassandra Guide we explored several hiking and biking routes and described them in detail. We regularly revise the routes and the description where necessary. As an individual traveller we offer you these descriptions together with GPS-tracks and marked detailed maps, so you can find your way easily. We also offer you an information package with background information, tips for the best meals and several other useful trivia. The tour location General tour information Kassandra is one of the ‘fingers’of the Halkidiki peninsula and is situated in the north of Greece, southeast of Thessaloniki. The climate on Kassandra is moderate with little rain and per year 300 days on which the sun shows itself! In spring (April, May, June) you’ll find lots of flowers and also September- November are lovely mild months for walking and biking. Mid July until end August it can be hot and in this high season the island is often crowded with (beach) tourists. www.annahiking.nl 2/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra The program consists of 3 biking routes and 3 walks. The biking routes are circular and start and end in Kallithea (one passes Nea Fokea); for the walks you’re taken to the start and collected at the end. Two extra walks are possible. At this moment we offer 2 accommodations in the village Kallithea (meaning ‘Lovely View’) and one just outside of Nea Fokea, somewhat more to the north. This tour is meant for people who are curious about the nature, culture and hinterland of a well-known beach holiday island. About the routes Alternately you make 3 circular bicycle tours and 3 linear walks. The bicycle tours are 50km to 63km, mostly on quiet asphalt roads and sometimes on gravel roads; shortcuts are possible. The walks are 15km to 20km and lead you mostly by gravel roads and some paths; the longest walk (20km) may be shortened to 13½km. While walking and cycling you’ll explore the whole island. You’ll find splendid rock formations (‘geomorfès’), vast beaches, lakes and inland seas with rare kinds of terrapins and many birds, and you’ll walk on the middle of the island with views to the sea on both sides. Near Kallithea you’ll visit the archeological site of Zeus Ammon. Along the coast, f.i. at Nea Fokea, you’ll see old watch towers. Everywhere are charming little chapels with a history going back to the Apostle Paul. The bicycle tours take you along lovely villages with ample opportunities for a break. www.annahiking.nl 3/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra You may extend your stay with extra days to explore the island with more walks, bicycle tours or by rental car, to make a cruise on Kassandra Bay along the islet Kelifos, to rent a boat, to go scuba-diving or a relaxing day in the Spa. Your host will gladly advise and assist! We recommend you to start the tour well trained and prepared with well worn-in ankle-high walking boots, for more hiking pleasure. Also for the biking tours it’s good to have ridden some miles at home. Modular set-up: extensions/alterations/abbrevations The arrangement may be extended with extra days to spend on Kassandra or in Thessaloniki. We offer 2 extra walks. You may change to one of the other accommodations on Kassandra for your extension, as long as you keep in mind the minimum number of overnight stays. There are several possibilities for an excursion; your host will gladly arrange this for you: • Boat cruise on Kassandra Bay, along Kelifos islet. • Wine-tasting at winery Tsikas. • Scuba-diving. • Jeep-safari. • Sailing or going out with a motorboat. • Horseback riding. • Airoplane tour above Kassandra. • Climbing at the cliffs near Loutra. • To the Petralona cave on the mainland. • To the archeological site Olynthos on the mainland. Also you can combine the arrangement with (parts of) other tours we offer. We’ll help you with the logistics. Easily to be reached are: • Olympos: backpack trekking over Mount Olympus. You’ll travel by public bus to Litochoro where the tour starts. • North and South Pindos. You’ll travel by public bus to Ioannina where your arrangement starts. In this area we offer various trekkings, mini-trekkings and walks from one location. About Halkidiki and Kassandra Halkidiki is a wooded and mountaineous peninsula in the district Central Macedonia in northeast Greece an is situated southeast of Thessaloniki. It consists of a central part and three ‘fingers’: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. The rightmost ‘finger’ Athos is a separate ‘state’ and belongs to the Orthodox Church; only monks live here and only men may visit. The middle ‘finger’ Sithonia is a peninsula with some villages and small beaches. Kassandra is the leftmost ‘finger’ and is essentially an island: a natural sea channel separates it from the mainland. At present two bridges connect the island to the mainland; until the 50’s all traffic was by boat. It has 14 villages (always inhabited) and 3 hamlets (only summer villas) so you’ll often pass a village. There are many and vast sandy beaches; at Kallithea alone you’ll find 2km sandy beach, gradually sloping into sea. Many villages have www.annahiking.nl 4/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra the prefix ‘Nea’, new: this is because the inhabitants were driven from Asia Minor and called their new village after the one they had left. Kassandra is famous for beach holidays, but there is so much more to enjoy! It offers a lot of (mostly young) forest, charming villages, lovely bays, some archeological sites, wineries for wine tasting, a spa with natural hot sulphur springs, splendid churches and chapels, old watch towers, folklore musea and caves. In the Petralona cave, just on the mainland, the skelet was found of the oldest human which lived a million years ago in one of the ice ages. Finds from this cave are to be admired in the archeological museum. You may make several excursions, see the extension possibities. The accommodations In Kallithea the accommodations we cooperate with are situated in the village, close to all facilities and on walking distance of a lovely sandy beach. Giorgio apartments: 7 spacious and tastefully decorated studios for 2 or 3 persons and a 2-room apartment for at most 4 people, all with equipped kitchen, beautiful bathroom and a balcony viewing the street or the garden. Distance to the beach: 650m. www.annahiking.nl 5/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra Alkionis studios: studios for 2, 3 or 4 people and a 2-room apartment for at most 5 people, all with equipped kitchen, bathroom and a balcony viewing the street or the garden. Distance to the beach: 550m. In Nea Fokea the accommodation we cooperate with is situated just outside of the village, in a quiet and green environment. VillaGiannis: spacious studios for 2, 3 or 4 people, all with kitchen, bathroom and balcony or terrace viewing the garden. There is a swimming pool and childrens pool with surveyance. In the garden is a bar and restaurant with stone barbecue. Distance to the beach: 2.1km. Mind: one of the bicycle tours passes the village, but the other two start and end in Kallithea, that’s 10km extra one way. Booking The arrangement can be booked from April until July and September until October. In high season its too warm and crowded. The season starts mid April and ends mid October: outside of this period lots of shops and tavernas are closed, although you’ll always find a place to drink, eat and shop. The lower season is the best time to have an active holiday on Kassandra. Prices per person 2020 min. Papadopoulos, Chair This research project examines the appearance and proliferation of some of the earliest cremation burials in Europe in the context of the prehistoric north Aegean. Using archaeological and osteological evidence from the region between the Pindos mountains and Evros river in northern Greece, this study examines the formation of death rituals, the role of landscape in the emergence of cemeteries, and expressions of social identities against the backdrop of diachronic change and synchronic variation. I draw on a rich and diverse record of mortuary practices to examine the co-existence of cremation and inhumation rites from the beginnings of farming in the Neolithic period

Abstract: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are recognized as a serious and growing public health epidemic in Europe, and are a cause of major losses in livestock production worldwide. This review is an attempt to present a summary of results from studies conducted over the last century until the end of the year 2020 regarding ticks, tick-borne pathogens, and tick-borne diseases in Greece. We provide an overview of the tick species found in Greece, as well as the most important tick-borne pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa) and corresponding diseases in circulation. We also consider prevalence data, as well as geographic and climatic conditions. Knowledge of past and current situations of TBDs, as well as an awareness of (risk) factors affecting future developments will help to find approaches to integrated tick management as part of the ‘One Health Concept’; it will assist in avoiding the possibility of hotspot disease emergencies and intra- and intercontinental transmission.

Halkidiki, Greece Halkidiki, the Full Guide Halkidiki, Greece Halkidiki inside your dreams… They say that no other place in Greece can boast beaches like those of Halkidiki. Still, the region stands for far more than beaches. Halkidiki is the perfect combination of the reviving Mediterranean light, the unspoiled land, the lively communities and a glorious past to explore. Add the local gastronomy, the religious traditions, the openness and hospitality of the people, the wide range of activities and lifestyles; flavour with the soothing scent of the pine-trees and there you are! -the already desirable has turned to the simply irresistible. Halkidiki is literally sculpted by nature forces to balance earth and sea. Three peninsulas, fjiord-like bays with emerald beaches and coves, imposing mountains -the stage for thriving life and civilizations in every form -like the thousand- year old monastic state of Mt. Athos, a unique World Heritage Site! Myth has it that the great greek philosopher Aristotle, who was born here and spent his life away from his native land -if only to teach the young Alexander the Great- never ceased to praise the honey of Halkidiki! Was it a metaphor or he actually meant the renowned honey we can cherish today? There is no way to know but who cares! You too will love the land and the rich produce of its gardens and orchards. It is truly a place of dreams… and your dream has only just begun… HALKIDIKI FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION Location: Halkidiki peninsula is located near Pets: There are pet friendly hotels, the city of Thessaloniki and it is a part of camping facilities and studios.

  • GIS Applications As a Tool for Tourism Planning and Education: a Case Study of Chalkidiki
CASE STUDY GIS applications as a tool for tourism planning and education: A case study of Chalkidiki Spyros Avdimiotis Thomas Mavrodontis Athanasios S. Dermetzopoulos Konstantinos Riavoglou SUMMARY Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are now recognized widely as a valuable tool for managing, decision making, analyzing, and displaying large volumes of diverse data pertinent to many local and regional planning activities. However, the number of GIS applications for regional tourism planning and education has not mushroomed as in other fields. This is also reflected in the field of sustainable tourism where the adoption of new technologies has been rather slow. Nonetheless, sustainable tourism decision-making and carrying capacity estimation has a lot to benefit from using such technologies. GIS can be used for managing various information needs, estimating indicators and, generally, assisting decision making in the planning phase, as well as in the monitoring and evaluation phases. In the field of tourism education GIS is just starting to become known as a valuable analytical tool by tourism/ hospitality firms and as a tourism economic development tool. However, college graduates with both tourism and GIS skills are virtually non-existent. The case of the Prefecture of Chalkidiki, Greece demonstrates the necessity and the value of such technologies. Key words: sustainable development; tourism education; decision making support; carrying capacity; Greece INTRODUCTION One of the most remarkable technological innovations al and non spatial data from the geographic world for in tourism planning and decision making is Geographic a particular set of purposes that varies for each disci- Information Systems (GIS). • Evaluation of Fusion Techniques on Quickbird-2 Imagery in the Region of Kassandra Peninsula, Chalkidiki, Greece
Evaluation of Fusion Techniques on Quickbird-2 Imagery in the region of Kassandra Peninsula, Chalkidiki, Greece P. Stournara, P. Patias School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, Department of Cadastre, Photogrammetry and Cartography, Laboratory of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, AUTH Abstract: Fusion is utilized to produce images of enhanced spatial detail while preserving the spectral quality of the original MS image. This study compared 6 fusion techniques: Principal Components, Wavelet, Gram-Schmidt, modified Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS), High Pass Filter (HPF) and Hyperspherical Colour Space (HCS). They were applied to Quickbird-2 data, which was acquired over the area of Kassandra peninsula in Chalkidiki. The results were evaluated qualitatively with visual inspection and quantitatively with sta- tistical analysis. All techniques were effective; the HPF and the HCS gave the best results, following modified IHS, Gram-Schmidt and PCA, while the Wavelet technique created distortion in the fused image. 1. Introduction Fusion is a widely used procedure in remote sensing applications, because it facili- tates extracting more information from satellite imagery. This is largely due to the complementary nature of many image datasets (Chavez et al., 1991). Panchromatic images contain more spatial information, while multispectral ones contain more spectral information. Fusion combines spatial content from the for- mer and spectral content from the latter into one fused image, which is better inter- pretable than the original images and thus more useful to various applications. Therefore many scientists have been involved so far with the development and im- plementation of different fusion techniques (Chavez et al., 1991; King & Wang, 2001; Siddiqui, Y. 2003; Han et al., 2008; Padwick et al., 2010 etc).
