We invite you to join us! more information: www.annahiking.nl (4-4-2020) MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra About AnnaHiking and the Kassandra Guide In 1991 we visited Greece for the first time. Our love for the country, the culture, the climate, the food, the language and the Greek has grown ever since. We feel at home here and want to communicate this feeling to others. Many people are familiar with the Greek “islands with beautiful beaches”. Many islands also boast a splendid inland with historical paths, ideal for hiking and biking. Kassandra on Halkidiki is such an island with much more on offer than beaches alone, and we’d love to introduce it to you. The local association published the website Kassandra Guide. The chairman called upon AnnaHiking to promote the island for its hiking and biking opportunities. As these are plentiful, we gladly obliged! In cooperation with the people from Kassandra Guide we explored several hiking and biking routes and described them in detail. We regularly revise the routes and the description where necessary. As an individual traveller we offer you these descriptions together with GPS-tracks and marked detailed maps, so you can find your way easily. We also offer you an information package with background information, tips for the best meals and several other useful trivia. The tour location General tour information Kassandra is one of the ‘fingers’of the Halkidiki peninsula and is situated in the north of Greece, southeast of Thessaloniki. The climate on Kassandra is moderate with little rain and per year 300 days on which the sun shows itself! In spring (April, May, June) you’ll find lots of flowers and also September- November are lovely mild months for walking and biking. Mid July until end August it can be hot and in this high season the island is often crowded with (beach) tourists. www.annahiking.nl 2/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra The program consists of 3 biking routes and 3 walks. The biking routes are circular and start and end in Kallithea (one passes Nea Fokea); for the walks you’re taken to the start and collected at the end. Two extra walks are possible. At this moment we offer 2 accommodations in the village Kallithea (meaning ‘Lovely View’) and one just outside of Nea Fokea, somewhat more to the north. This tour is meant for people who are curious about the nature, culture and hinterland of a well-known beach holiday island. About the routes Alternately you make 3 circular bicycle tours and 3 linear walks. The bicycle tours are 50km to 63km, mostly on quiet asphalt roads and sometimes on gravel roads; shortcuts are possible. The walks are 15km to 20km and lead you mostly by gravel roads and some paths; the longest walk (20km) may be shortened to 13½km. While walking and cycling you’ll explore the whole island. You’ll find splendid rock formations (‘geomorfès’), vast beaches, lakes and inland seas with rare kinds of terrapins and many birds, and you’ll walk on the middle of the island with views to the sea on both sides. Near Kallithea you’ll visit the archeological site of Zeus Ammon. Along the coast, f.i. at Nea Fokea, you’ll see old watch towers. Everywhere are charming little chapels with a history going back to the Apostle Paul. The bicycle tours take you along lovely villages with ample opportunities for a break. www.annahiking.nl 3/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra You may extend your stay with extra days to explore the island with more walks, bicycle tours or by rental car, to make a cruise on Kassandra Bay along the islet Kelifos, to rent a boat, to go scuba-diving or a relaxing day in the Spa. Your host will gladly advise and assist! We recommend you to start the tour well trained and prepared with well worn-in ankle-high walking boots, for more hiking pleasure. Also for the biking tours it’s good to have ridden some miles at home. Modular set-up: extensions/alterations/abbrevations The arrangement may be extended with extra days to spend on Kassandra or in Thessaloniki. We offer 2 extra walks. You may change to one of the other accommodations on Kassandra for your extension, as long as you keep in mind the minimum number of overnight stays. There are several possibilities for an excursion; your host will gladly arrange this for you: • Boat cruise on Kassandra Bay, along Kelifos islet. • Wine-tasting at winery Tsikas. • Scuba-diving. • Jeep-safari. • Sailing or going out with a motorboat. • Horseback riding. • Airoplane tour above Kassandra. • Climbing at the cliffs near Loutra. • To the Petralona cave on the mainland. • To the archeological site Olynthos on the mainland. Also you can combine the arrangement with (parts of) other tours we offer. We’ll help you with the logistics. Easily to be reached are: • Olympos: backpack trekking over Mount Olympus. You’ll travel by public bus to Litochoro where the tour starts. • North and South Pindos. You’ll travel by public bus to Ioannina where your arrangement starts. In this area we offer various trekkings, mini-trekkings and walks from one location. About Halkidiki and Kassandra Halkidiki is a wooded and mountaineous peninsula in the district Central Macedonia in northeast Greece an is situated southeast of Thessaloniki. It consists of a central part and three ‘fingers’: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. The rightmost ‘finger’ Athos is a separate ‘state’ and belongs to the Orthodox Church; only monks live here and only men may visit. The middle ‘finger’ Sithonia is a peninsula with some villages and small beaches. Kassandra is the leftmost ‘finger’ and is essentially an island: a natural sea channel separates it from the mainland. At present two bridges connect the island to the mainland; until the 50’s all traffic was by boat. It has 14 villages (always inhabited) and 3 hamlets (only summer villas) so you’ll often pass a village. There are many and vast sandy beaches; at Kallithea alone you’ll find 2km sandy beach, gradually sloping into sea. Many villages have www.annahiking.nl 4/14 ©AnnaHiking MKAS210I: Active on Kassandra the prefix ‘Nea’, new: this is because the inhabitants were driven from Asia Minor and called their new village after the one they had left. Kassandra is famous for beach holidays, but there is so much more to enjoy! It offers a lot of (mostly young) forest, charming villages, lovely bays, some archeological sites, wineries for wine tasting, a spa with natural hot sulphur springs, splendid churches and chapels, old watch towers, folklore musea and caves. In the Petralona cave, just on the mainland, the skelet was found of the oldest human which lived a million years ago in one of the ice ages. Finds from this cave are to be admired in the archeological museum. You may make several excursions, see the extension possibities.
