Juni 2021 – Das Dortmunder U zeigt vom 26. Juni bis zum 17. Oktober die Sonderausstellung „Studio 54: Night Magic“. Die vom Brooklyn Museum organisierte und von Matthew Yokobosky kuratierte Ausstellung war bisher nur in Nordamerika zu sehen. Dortmund ist die einzige europäische Station, an der die Besucher*innen noch einmal in den Glamour der 70er-Jahre und die legendären Geschichten rund um den weltberühmten Nachtclub eintauchen können. Matthew Yokobosky, Senior Curator of Fashion and Material Culture am Brooklyn Museum, gibt im Interview Einblicke in die Entstehung der einzigartigen Ausstellung. Seit 1999 hat er mehr als fünfundneunzig temporäre und permanente Ausstellungen im Brooklyn Museum gestaltet. Zuvor war er Associate Curator of Film and Video am Whitney Museum of American Art. Wie sind Sie auf die Idee gekommen, eine Ausstellung über Studio 54 zu gestalten? Ich war bei einem Treffen mit der Direktorin des Brooklyn Museums, Anne Pasternak, und sie hatte gerade einen großen Bildband von Ian Schrager über seinen Nachtclub Studio 54 erhalten. Ich fragte, ob ich ihn mir ausleihen könnte und ertappte mich dabei, wie ich ihn ein paar Mal durchblätterte, während ich telefonierte. Ein paar Monate später, bei einem weiteren Treffen, fragte mich Anne, was ich mir für zukünftige Ausstellungen vorstelle. Ich meinte, vielleicht gäbe es ja eine Möglichkeit, eine Ausstellung rund um Studio 54 zu machen, aus der Perspektive von Kunst und Kultur.
